SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Alternative Affinities: Constellations of Kinship and Community
DESCRIPTION:The Kleinfamilie\, or “nuclear family\,” endures as a core structure that helps to define human relations. With roots in the eighteenth century\, the Kleinfamilie provided a social and economic foundation for the rise of the modern nation state. However\, the heterogeneous and multidimensional ways individuals and communities connect with one another today require a broader focus. A more fluid and encompassing term\, “kinship\,” offers a way of seeing and describing those ties that extend beyond the nuclear family and are by nature shifting and\ntemporary.\n\nUsing kinship as a framework\, Heidi Schlipphacke’s book The Aesthetics of Kinship: Form and Family in the Long Eighteenth Century (Bucknell University Press\, 2023) reexamines 18th-century German novels and dramas to uncover alternative affinities that are hidden when exclusively considered through the walled-off Kleinfamilie. Sclipphacke’s investigation belongs to a larger body of recent scholarly work seeking to reconceive of repurpose the term “kinship.” For example\, Jennifer Evans’s The Queer Art of History: Queer Kinship after Fascism (Duke University Press\, 2023) deploys kinship as an analytic category to demonstrate how queer and trans people in postwar and contemporary Germany navigated citizenship\, love\, and public and family life. A broader investigation into kinship\, Adele E. Clarke’s and Donna Harraway’s edited volume\nMaking Kin Not Population: Reconceiving Generations (The University of Chicago Press\, 2018) contemplates questions of reproductive and environmental justice to\nconsider how we establish personal and public connections today. Building on recent interventions like these\, this conference will approach kinship as an interdisciplinary tool for exploring relational networks and the formation of personal and collective identity within–and in opposition to–“Western\,” modern\, white\, heterosexual\, and even anthropocentric norms.\n\nPROGRAM: \n\nFriday\, October 30th\nPalmer Commons\, Great Lakes North\n\n3:00 pm \nKeynote: Heidi Schlipphacke\nTitle: Kinship in Space and Time\n\n4:30 pm\nCoffee and Tea Break\n\n4:45 pm: Panel 1: Loss\, Fracture\, and Memory\n● Henrique Carvalho Pereira\, Der andere Fehl\n● Emma Stratman\, Wer über die Märchen lacht\, war nie in Not: On Obstinacy and the\nFairytale in the Work of Alexander Kluge\n● Nathan Bailey\, Seismic Epiphanies: Utopian Modes of Caring and Nursing in Heinrich\nvon Kleist‘s Das Erdbeben in Chili\nRespondent: Ella Wilhelm\n\n\nSaturday\, October 31st\nPalmer Commons\, Great Lakes North\n\n8:00 am\nBreakfast\n\n8:45 am: Panel 2: Nation and Empire\n● Hannah Edwards\, Kinship and Kingship: Heraklean Affinities and Diplomacy in Ancient\nMacedonia\n● Sam Farmer\, Partisan Places and Anti-Fascism in the (Post-)Yugoslav Family on Film\n● Deborah Pomeranz\, The Klein-Familie on Wheels: Race\, Genre\, and Kinship in Turn of\nthe Century Popular Performance (Deborah Pomeranz)\n● Ibrahim Adissa Owoo\, Orphans of the Empire: Colonial Kinship and Diasporic Belonging\nin La Saison de l’ombre of Léonora Miano\nRespondent: Kristin Dickinson\n\n10:15 am: Coffee and Tea Break\n\n10:30 am: Panel 3: Female Kinship\n● Tamar Gutfeld\, Daughters of 1930: Authority\, Crisis and Kinship in Gilgi eine von uns\n(Keun\, 1931) and Kuhle Wampe (Dudow and Brecht\, 1932)\n● Mathilda Trausch\, Flying Witches: Gossip and Alternative Female Kinship in Helma\nSanders Brahms’ Deutschland\, bleiche Mutter (1980)\n● Maria Zahner\, Mothers and Daughters in the Holocaust: reading Ruth Klüger and\nCordelia Edvardson\nRespondent: Kerstin Barndt\n\n12:00 pm: Lunch\n\n1:00 pm: Panel 4: Kinship in 20th Century Literature\n● Kehinde Sowunmi\, Witnessing the Wall: Narrative Kinship and the Implicated Reader in\nMarlen Haushofer’s Die Wand\n● Ruth Ireti Falaiye\, Kinship and Transatlantic Friendship in Kafka’s Das Urteil\n● Olivia Gilbert\, Lateral Affinities: Sibling Sociality in Robert Musil’s Man Without Qualities\n(1930-1934)\nRespondent: Johannes von Moltke\n\n2:30: Closing Remarks

SUMMARY:Rally / Mass Meeting:New England Literature Program (NELP) Mass Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Each year during Spring Term\, NELP sends forty students and thirteen instructors to live and study together in the woods of New England. The program is rigorous and exhilarating and deeply fulfilling:\n\n+We+ meet in small classes every day. \n+We+ read novels\, poems\, and essays written in and about the place we're living.\n+We+ do all our writing in personal journals. \n+We+ live and work collaboratively\, sharing the cooking and chores that maintain our community. \n+We+ put down our phones and computers for the duration of the program. \n+We+ swim in lakes. We hike up mountains. We touch the ocean.\n\nOur students receive nine credits in six weeks and fulfill LSA's Upper-Level Writing Requirement. U-M Students from a wide range of majors and schools attend NELP each year.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Global Postcolonialisms Collective
DESCRIPTION:The Global Postcolonialisms Collective (GPC) is honored to invite you to our first event of the year\, Postcolonial Psyches: The Memoirs of Najla and Edward Said. \n\nBreakfast will be served. Please RSVP: https://forms.gle/8PXFrTf26EkzzsKd8\n\n*Out of Place: A Memoir* \nby Edward Said\nFrom one of the most important intellectuals of our time comes an extraordinary story of exile and return. A fatal medical diagnosis in 1991 convinced Edward Said that he should leave a record of where he was born and spent his childhood\, and so with this memoir he rediscovers the lost Arab world of his early years in Palestine\, Lebanon\, and Egypt.\n\n*Looking for Palestine: Growing Up Confused in an Arab-American Family* \nby Najla Said\nNajla Said\, an author\, actress\, and playwright\, grew up in New York City\, confused and conflicted about her cultural background and identity. Confronting her own health problems\, Najla eventually accepts her multiple heritages as a Palestinian-Lebanese-American.\n\nGPC will email pdfs of selected chapters in the coming weeks in preparation for the discussion. To purchase your own copies\, please consider supporting Literati: https://literatibookstore.com/ \n\n\nThe University of Michigan Global Postcolonialisms Collective (GPC) is a transdisciplinary endeavor that aims to bring together academics\, artists\, and activists working to expand the boundaries of postcolonial studies and engaging in other forms of de- and anti-colonial social practices.
