Who do you trust? More people than you think. We know about trust among those in our closest relationships, such as friends and family, but we also trust strangers every day in transient relationships on a frequent basis, as well as major institutions that govern our lives across our lifetime. Trust is the oxygen of social life and has tremendous implications. Marriages succeed or fail based on trust. A country’s health depends on trust in medicine and science, and it prospers when their citizens don’t view each other with cynicism. In this talk, I focus, though, on a vexing paradox about trust: Despite trust being essential for social life to thrive—try to have a relationship or run a civilization without it—powerful behavioral theories consider it irrational behavior, and you should never do it. I discuss what research trying to resolve this paradox reveals about the ways the human species manages this multifaceted challenge of trusting each other, allowing life to avoid being nasty, brutish, or short.

About the speaker: David Dunning is Mary Ann and Charles R. Walgreen, Jr., Professor of the Study of Human Understanding, and Professor of Psychology, at the University of Michigan. He received a Ph.D. from Stanford and his BA from Michigan State, both in psychology. His expertise is in experimental social psychology, focusing on the psychological processes underlying self-misbelief and social misunderstanding, with applications to economics, medicine, organizations, and the law. His most cited work, supported over the years by the National Institute of Mental Health, National Science Foundation, and the John F. Templeton Foundation, shows that people typically hold flattering self-opinions that cannot be justified from the objective evidence. He has written short pieces for more general audiences in Scientific American and the New York Times and appeared in the final episode of Adam Ruins Everything. With Justin Kruger, he received the Grawemeyer Award in Psychology and the Society of Experimental Psychology Scientific Impact Award in 2023. In 2025, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
The path from adolescence to adulthood has changed dramatically over the past several decades. Compared with earlier generations, today young adults spend more time in school, enter careers later, form long-term romantic partnerships in different ways, delay marriage and parenthood, and move in and out of adult roles with less predictability. These changes raise important questions: What does it mean to “grow up” today? Are young people simply taking longer to become adults, or has the very nature of adulthood changed? In this talk, I provide an overview of the modern transition to adulthood — what it is, why it matters, and how it has evolved across recent generations. I examine changes in education, work, relationships, parenthood, and health-related behaviors such as substance use. Rather than viewing young adulthood as a fixed stage that looks the same across time, I consider how historical circumstances shape the opportunities, challenges, and expectations young people face. The goal is to better understand not only today’s young adults, but also the changing social landscape in which each generation comes of age.

About the speaker: Justin Jager is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Associate Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. As a developmental psychologist, he studies how young people grow into adulthood and how that process has changed across generations. His research looks at the many parts of life that shape this transition, including family, friends, school, work, romantic relationships, parenthood, and health-related behaviors such as substance use. He is especially interested in how social and historical changes alter the opportunities, expectations, and challenges young people face as they move toward independence. By studying adolescence and young adulthood in its social and historical context, his work helps shed light on what it means to “grow up” in a changing world.
How is pleasure (‘liking’) different from desire (‘wanting’), and how are they generated by the brain? Answering those questions is crucial to understanding addiction, compulsivity, and many other aspects of human behavior. Our work at Michigan helped show that the brain’s mesolimbic dopamine system is not a pleasure ‘liking’ mechanism as was once thought, but rather only a motivational ‘wanting’ mechanism. Separate brain opioid hedonic hotspots generate feelings of ‘liking’.

In addiction, drug-induced sensitization of dopamine systems in vulnerable individuals can amplify ‘wanting’ to arguably compulsive levels, even when what is desired does not provide pleasure once obtained. A recent animal laboratory demonstration is ‘wanting what hurts:’ desiring experiences that give no pleasure at all, as a prototype of how addictive compulsion works. Incentive sensitization helps explain how addiction can create a vulnerability to relapse that persists despite sincere desire to quit, even long after drugs are no longer taken.

About the speaker: Kent Berridge is James Olds Distinguished University Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Michigan. Research in Berridge’s lab has aimed for better answers to questions such as: How is pleasure (‘liking’) generated by the brain? How is desire (‘wanting’) generated by the brain? How does wanting something differ from liking it? And how does addiction become compulsive?
Catherine Thomas is an assistant professor of psychology and of organizational studies at the University of Michigan. She integrates the insights of social psychology, lens of cultural psychology, and tools of behavioral science to examine and intervene upon psychosocial drivers of poverty and inequality in the U.S. and around the globe. In particular, her work interrogates relationships among agency, dignity, and economic mobility. In this work, she conducts lab and field experiments across diverse low-income contexts, including in the U.S., sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia, and often through interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships with nonprofits and governments. Her work has been published in journals including Nature and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and in media outlets including Time and Foreign Affairs.

The Real-World Perspectives on Poverty Solutions speaker series is free and open to the public as well as being a one-credit course for U-M students (SW503). In-person talks include coffee, cookies, and the chance to ask the speakers questions, or you can watch the livestream on YouTube.",
