Reviewing *shady* characters, like lazurite and azurite, will shed light on ancient artisanal capabilities, technical knowledge, and even trade connections that reveal the extent to which ancient people traveled and experimented in order to obtain blue. The development in the late 4th millennium BCE of a synthetic blue pigment, Egyptian blue, made it possible not only to paint in blue but also to use this material in ways other than as a pigment. A combined approach allows us to better tease out the variables and complexities in the *chaine operatoire* (procedural steps) behind the creation and application of these pigments, using experimental archaeology paired with ancient texts and artifact analysis. Tracing how artisans and everyday people in antiquity worked with blues provides an opportunity to explore the material constraints and practical choices of adding color.\n\nHilary Becker (AB Bryn Mawr College, PhD UNC-Chapel Hill) is an associate professor at Binghamton University (SUNY). Buck Roberson, PhD Candidate in Interdepartmental Program in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology (IPAMAA)", "event_type":"Lecture \/ Discussion", "event_type_id":"13", "description":"Among the most discussed changes which occurred in mainland Greece from the end of the Early Bronze Age to the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age (2350-1800 BCE) are how the pottery used for eating and drinking shifted. From \u201csauceboats\u201d to \u201couzo cups,\u201d we see dramatic and rapid shifts in both the number and types of shapes in use. While much ink has been spilled regarding the chronologies and interconnections seen through these changes, much less attention has been focused on their actual lifetimes of use as dishes. In this talk Buck will discuss his ongoing dissertation research into eating and drinking practices as seen through pottery during this time period at sites in the northeastern Peloponnese and in the Saronic Gulf and how these practices appear to have changed. His work for the past two years has primarily been through use-alteration analysis, the close examination of the wear and degradation on these pots from their lifetimes of use \u2013 direct signs of how people were interacting with their pots.
