SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student DGT: Convexity in a complex world
DESCRIPTION:Complex geometry is a cornerstone of contemporary mathematics\; convex geometry\, by contrast\, has remained fairly niche since its modern inception in the early 20th century. Nonetheless\, the two subjects are related by numerous extremely deep correspondences. Even more bizarrely\, these correspondences tend to end up being more \"useful\" on the complex side\, suggesting that there is some \"structure\" on the complex side that is somehow more naturally analyzed through its convex counterpart. In this talk\, we will sample some results from this fascinating history before discussing a \"convex\" approach to studying Kähler–Einstein metrics.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Crepant resolutions via stacks
DESCRIPTION:Consider an invariant that behaves nicely for smooth varieties\, such as Euler number\, Betti numbers\, or Hodge numbers. Suppose we want a version of this invariant for singular varieties that sees interesting information about the singularities. I will discuss how this naturally leads to the notion of crepant resolutions of singularities. However\, crepant resolutions (by varieties) are rare in practice. I will discuss joint work with M. Satriano in which we show that crepant resolutions actually exist in broad generality\, as long as one is willing to consider algebraic stacks. Specifically\, any variety with log-terminal singularities admits a crepant resolution by a smooth algebraic stack. As one consequence\, in joint work with J. Huang and M. Satriano\, we obtain a cohomological interpretation for Batyrev's stringy Hodge numbers. This talk will not assume familiarity with stacks.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantitative propagation of chaos and universality for asymmetric Langevin spin glass dynamics
DESCRIPTION:We obtain quantitative estimates on quenched propagation of chaos for Langevin spin glass dynamics with i.i.d. disorder. Prior work in the case of Gaussian disorder established the qualitative convergence of the law of a single spin to a deterministic McKean--Vlasov limit. We prove convergence rates in expected Wasserstein distance and quantitative concentration rates for Lipschitz observables under the assumption that the disorder satisfies the T_2 inequality. The proof uses a coupling argument\, together with techniques from concentration of measure\, filtering theory\, and Malliavin calculus.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Geometry-Topology RTG Seminar: Stability Patterns for Spherical Braid Groups
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Stability patterns for the homology of configuration spaces has been studied for decades\, starting with homological stability in the 1970's\, then representation stability in 2010\, and stable periodicity in 2015. When the configuration spaces are Eilenberg-MacLane spaces\, these stability results extend to the group homology of surface braid groups. However\, configuration spaces on S^2 and RP^2 are not Eilenberg-MacLane spaces and so the stability patterns for their group homology had not yet been established. In this talk\, I will use a result from Fred Cohen and Jonathan Pakianathan as well as the theory of FI-homology to establish stability patterns for the group homology of braid groups on S^2 and RP^2.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: Tightness of and counterexamples to several quantum estimates
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Recently the TCS query learning ala Nisan--Mansur--Linial got the boost from a harmonic analysis random algorithm. This problem has a non-commutative version where one needs to learn a very big matrix (so-called d-local hamiltonians) from a few random queries.\nThe corresponding harmonic analysis results have a drawback that it is still not known how tight they are. We will discuss this and show tightness for some of them. Interestingly\, one such tightness result is closely related to Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen paradox from quantum mechanics. On a close issue: arguably the main problem in understanding the speed up of quantum algorithms versus classical ones for a certain collection of problems (called Aaronson--Ambainis conjecture and still open) will be discussed too if time permits.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Math and physics at the moiré scale
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Placing a two-dimensional lattice with a small rotation gives rise to almost periodic \"moiré\" patterns on a superlattice scale much larger than the original lattice. We have used the mathematical techniques developed to study waves in inhomogeneous media to identify a regime where the Bistritzer-MacDonald continuum model emerges as the effective dynamics for electrons modeled as wave-packets spectrally concentrated at the monolayer Dirac points of linear dispersion\, up to error that we rigorously estimate. We have shown that this regime is realized in twisted bilayer graphene at the first \"magic\" angle where the group velocity of the wave packet is zero and strongly correlated electronic phases (superconductivity\, Mott insulators\, etc.) have recently been observed.\n\nWe will present recent results that rigorously extend this analysis to account for the effects of structural relaxation and to essentially arbitrary moiré materials such as twisted multilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) or even twisted heterostructures consisting of layers of distinct 2D materials.\n\nContact: Ian Tobasco

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorial invariance for the coefficient of q in Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
DESCRIPTION:I will describe joint work with Grant Barkley and Thomas Lam in which we study the Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture (CIC)\, which asserts that Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials depend only on the combinatorics of Bruhat order. Motivated by the cluster structure on Richardson varieties\, we prove the combinatorial invariance of the coefficient of q in KL polynomials for arbitrary Coxeter groups. We also prove the Gabber-Joseph conjecture for the second-highest Ext group of a pair of Verma modules\, as well as the combinatorial invariance of the dimension of this group.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology seminar: Invariants from real Heegaard Floer homology
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Introduced by Guth and Manolescu\, real Heegaard Floer homology is an invariant associated to 3-manifolds equipped with an involution. In this talk\, we will see how under certain assumptions\, the real Heegaard Floer homology groups admit an absolute Z/2 grading. We then specialize to double branched covers of links in S^3\, and the Euler characteristic in this case is the Heegaard Floer analogue of Miyazawa’s degree invariant. Once the signs are fixed\, we show that this quantity can be computed inductively using a skein relation. Furthermore\, we show that it can be expressed in terms of the Alexander polynomial of the link.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Math Grad Show and Tell Seminar: The Limits of Axioms
DESCRIPTION:Has this ever happened to you? You're sitting down to prove a lemma\, but none of your ideas seem to work out! At the same time\, you've tried a number of counterexamples\, but none of them seem to disprove your result! In this talk\, we'll cover how this may not be your fault: there exist mathematical statements which can neither be proved or disproved from our system of axioms. We'll sketch a technique for proving these sorts of independence results with the classical example\, the continuum hypothesis.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Robust and Risk-Sensitive Acceleration in Gradient Methods
DESCRIPTION:First-order methods such as gradient descent (GD) are foundational in optimization. In unconstrained problems with exact gradients\, momentum-based methods—most notably Nesterov’s accelerated gradient descent (AGD) and Polyak’s heavy-ball (HB) method—achieve faster convergence by improving dependence on the condition number. However\, this acceleration comes at a cost: momentum amplifies gradient noise\, making these methods less robust than GD under standard parameter choices and requiring more accurate gradient estimates to attain comparable accuracy. Similar challenges arise in convex and nonconvex min–max optimization.\nMotivated by applications in machine learning\, this talk studies unconstrained and min–max optimization under deterministic\, unbiased stochastic\, and biased stochastic gradient noise. I will present new algorithms that achieve optimal robustness against different noise types\, using control-theoretic tools such as the H_2 norm\, the H_∞ norm\, and the risk-sensitivity index\, together with coherent risk measures. I will also discuss worst-case noise constructions and high-probability convergence guarantees. This perspective builds a bridge between optimization and robust control theory and enables the design of noise-robust and risk-sensitive accelerated methods.\nRepresentative Publications:\nM. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: Non-abelian Hirota–Miwa Equations for the KPZ Universality Class
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The KPZ universality class is a broad collection of mathematical and physical models linked through their shared universal scaling behavior. A privileged subset\, known as exactly solvable models\, possess algebraic structure that allows for exact formulas for their probability distributions.\n\nFor an even smaller subset of these models\, their distributions have been shown to satisfy nonlinear equations from classical integrable systems\, including Painlevé\, KP\, and Toda equations. Why should equations from soliton theory appear in random growth\, and why do they keep reappearing across different models?\n\nI will describe a framework that gives a common algebraic explanation and extends this connection to eighteen exactly solvable models. The framework organizes the Fredholm determinant formulas of solvable KPZ models into an overdetermined linear problem whose compatibility conditions reveal a discrete integrable structure gauge equivalent to the non-abelian Hirota–Miwa equation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Spectral theory of soliton gases for integrable equations and related problems
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Soliton gases for integrable systems is a rapidly developing new area in the theory of nonlinear waves. The spectral theory of soliton gases is concerned about macroscopic characteristics of large soliton ensembles. We go briefly over the history of the subject\, such as V. Zakharov’s (1971) expression of the average velocity of a trial soliton in a (diluted) gas and the idea of the thermodynamic limit of wavenumbers and frequencies of finite gap solutions of G. El (2003). We then discuss some recent results and open problems\, as well as some methods of potential theory and algebraic geometry that appear to be relevant for soliton gases.\n\nContact: Peter Miller

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Chow Vanishing and Motives of Cluster Varieties
DESCRIPTION:Progress over the last decade has shown that the cohomologies of full rank\, locally acyclic cluster varieties enjoy remarkable combinatorial structures. Crucial in this program has been the observation that these cohomology groups are\, in certain Hodge theoretic senses\, about as simple as possible. In this talk we will discuss a motivic lift of this observation. In particular we establish that the Voevodsky motives of really full rank sink-recurrent cluster varieties are mixed Tate and split over Q (strengthening results of Lam and Speyer)\, and we prove that their integral Chow groups are all trivial.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Kullback–Leibler Mirror-Prox for Measure-Valued Variational Inequalities and Mean-Field Equilibria
DESCRIPTION:We study the computation of static mean-field equilibria on a compact state space by formu-\nlating the equilibrium condition as a variational inequality over probability measures. We propose\nan entropic variant of Korpelevich’s extragradient algorithm—the Kullback–Leibler Mirror-Prox\nmethod—in which Euclidean projections are replaced by relative-entropy proximal steps. Each\nhalf-step is therefore an explicit exponential reweighting of the current measure\, implemented on a\nfinite state-space discretization. Under Lasry–Lions monotonicity and continuity assumptions\, we\nprove convergence of mesh-refined ergodic averages and obtain finite-iteration Minty-residual and\napproximate-equilibrium bounds that jointly quantify iteration and discretization errors. Under\nstrong monotonicity\, we derive metric convergence rates for the last\, best\, and averaged iterates.\nWe also develop a KL-type Tikhonov regularization that selects the equilibrium minimizing relative\nentropy with respect to a reference measure. The framework applies to potential and nonpotential\ncost operators and does not require differentiability or convexity of the cost in the individual state.\n\nJoint work with Erhan Bayraktar\, Ibrahim Ekren and Lu Vy.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Long time asymptotics of the generalized soliton gas for the mKdV equation
DESCRIPTION:We analyze a new class of solutions of the modified KdV equation introduced by Dyachenko\, Zakharov\, and Zakharov\, and which can be interpreted as a soliton gas. These solutions are characterized by a Riemann-Hilbert problem which arises as the limit $N\to \infty$ of a sequence of $2N$-soliton RH problems\, where the solitons display two different triangularity in the jumps. The limiting RH problem belongs to a novel class of problems\, where the jump matrices do not have any zero entry (as opposed to the classical upper/lower triangular setting).\n We show that the initial profile of such a gas solution is approaching a cnoidal wave solution for $x\to \pm \infty$ with different phase shifts\, and we establish an asymptotic description of the gas of solitons for large times that is valid over the entire spatial domain\, in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions\, with slowly modulated phase shifts as time varies from $-\infty$ to $+\infty$.\nThis is a joint work with Ken McLaughlin (Tulane U.) and Robert Jenkins (UCF).\n\n*To request access to the Zoom room\, please contact Nathan Hayford at nhayford [ at ] umich.edu.*

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: How to achieve quantum advantage?
DESCRIPTION:The development of error-corrected quantum computers raises the prospect of quantum advantages in scientific computation. Which problems are likely to benefit\, and what will it take to realize these advantages? I will first discuss basic quantum algorithm concepts and some criteria for comparing quantum and classical computation. I will then focus on eigenvalue problems\, where improving the precision of an approximate solution offers one possible route to quantum advantage. Recent advances allow quantum eigensolvers to use few auxiliary qubits and short coherent evolutions\, with near-optimal dependence on the target precision. I will introduce these developments and a method for estimating multiple eigenvalues together with their multiplicities. Most of the presentation is intended to be accessible to a broad mathematical audience without prior background in quantum computation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Policy Gradient Flow for Stochastic Control
DESCRIPTION:Reinforcement learning has achieved remarkable success in landmark applications such as AlphaGo and AlphaFold\, and is increasingly expected to play a central role in emerging domains such as autonomous driving. A substantial body of work has established theoretical foundations for classical reinforcement learning algorithms\, including temporal-difference learning\, policy iteration\, and Q-learning. By contrast\, policy gradient descent\, despite its widespread use\, remains less well understood from a theoretical perspective\, largely because of its non-convex structure and the complexity of the underlying functional space. Existing convergence analyses typically require uniform regularity assumptions on the policy\, viewed as a feedback control function\, along the gradient flow\; moreover\, the resulting convergence rates depend on these regularity bounds. In this work\, we significantly strengthen the existing convergence theory. Our key insight is to relate policy gradient descent to a mirror flow on the space of probability measures over controlled trajectories\, where the Bregman divergence is induced by the convex control cost. We rigorously prove a JKO-type convergence result showing that the discrete-time mirror flow converges to its continuous-time counterpart\, and we identify the limiting dynamics as a preconditioned policy gradient descent flow on the space of control processes. Leveraging this mirror-flow perspective\, we establish an exponential convergence rate that is independent of policy regularity. The convergence holds both in Bregman divergence and in the value of the associated control problem.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Programmable Collective Dynamics in Active Matter and Robot Swarms
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Collective systems are able to exhibit complex global dynamics through relatively simple local interactions\, and they give us a powerful connection between nonequilibrium physics\, active matter\, and robotics. In this talk\, I will present our work on understanding and controlling collective behavior across theoretical and experimental systems. I will first discuss experimental work involving magnetic microrobot collectives in which competing pairwise interactions enable reconfiguration between distinct states\, locomotion\, and environmental interactions. And when heterogeneity and asymmetric interactions are introduced\, they can be used to program self-organization and generate various collective behaviors that include phase separation\, morphology changes\, and object manipulation. At the more theoretical level\, I will discuss swarmalators\, which are agents that simultaneously swarm and synchronize\, and I will show how chirality\, heterogeneity\, multiple internal phases\, and nonreciprocal interactions can enable fascinating and non-intuitive collective states\, as well as be exploited to systematically control the collective to exhibit desired shape formation\, navigation\, and object manipulation\, such that principles from active matter can be used for programmable collective robotic systems.\n\n\nContact: Silas Alben

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Exploratory Optimal Reinsurance under the Mean-Variance Criterion
DESCRIPTION:This paper proposes a Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach to the optimal reinsurance problem\nwhen the insurer faces uncertainty about the insurance claim dynamics. To this end\, we first formulate\nan exploratory version of the problem as a relaxed stochastic control problem. Within a broad class of\nparametric retention functions and general risk loading functions\, we derive the closed-form equilibrium\npolicy under the continuous-time mean-variance criterion. This is achieved through a formal verification\ntheorem and solving classical solutions of a system of exploratory extended Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman\n(EEHJB) equations. We then establish a policy iteration theorem\, showing that starting from any timeand state-homogeneous policy\, policy iteration converges to the derived equilibrium policy. Next\, we\ndevelop a martingale orthogonality theorem\, which serves as the foundation of our RL algorithm. The\nalgorithm is evaluated through simulation studies and real data from the U.S. National Flood Insurance\nProgram. Results demonstrate that the RL approach effectively learns unknown claim distributions\,\ntracks unobserved changes in claim dynamics and produces higher insurer surplus trajectories than the\nmaximum likelihood estimation (MLE) approach while simultaneously exhibiting greater robustness to\nthe choice of training window.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Stable map resolutions of Richardson varieties
DESCRIPTION:Given a circle action S on a projective variety X\, we introduce the \"stable map quotient\" using Kontsevich's space of stable maps of curves. In the case that X is a Richardson variety (the intersection of a Schubert with an opposite Schubert variety)\, generally very singular\, the quotient is nonetheless smooth! I'll use this to give a log resolution of Richardson varieties\, and describe the dual simplicial complex to the anticanonical sncd boundary.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A New Approach for the Continuous Time Kyle-Back Strategic Insider Equilibrium Problem
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we consider a continuous-time Kyle-Back model which is a game between an insider and a market maker. The existing literature typically focuses on constructing equilibria with a PDE approach\, which requires certain Markovian structures. We characterize all equilibria through a coupled system of forward-backward SDEs. In particular\, when the time duration is small\, we show that the FBSDE is well-posed\, and therefore the game has a unique equilibrium. Moreover\, this unique equilibrium may be non-Markovian and thus not attainable via the PDE approach. We next study the set value of the game\, which roughly speaking is the set of insider's values over all equilibria and thus is by nature unique. Finally\, we characterize the set value through a level set of a certain standard HJB equation.\nIn the second part of the talk\, we apply the new approach to the Kyle-Back model with dynamic legal risk and large numbers of noise traders. In this setting\, the insider chooses a strategy that conceals his identity within a large volume of surrounding trades and concentrates on medium-sized trades. We establish an intensity-based mathematical framework for explaining the interconnections between insider trading and stealth trading. When the number of noise traders becomes large\, the price impact of the insider asymptotically vanishes\, and consequently the stochastic game becomes deterministic optimizations\, which also carry implications for regulatory investigations and sanctions.\n\nThe results above include the joint work with Weixuan Xia and with Jianfeng Zhang.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology seminar: Canonical bases of skein algebras\, and categorification
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: For an oriented surface S\, the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of S is an algebra generated by isotopy classes of framed links in the thickened surface S x (-1\,1) modulo skein relations\, and it quantizes the SL2 character variety of S. I will review various vector space bases of the skein algebra\, and discuss the problem on the positivity of structure constants. I will spend enough time to give an elementary introduction\, and towards the end I will briefly present recently known results\, from quantum cluster algebras and mirror symmetry\, from foams\, and from quantized K-theoretic Coulomb branches. I hope to focus more on the last one\, which is based on my joint work 2505.13332 with Dylan Allegretti and Peng Shan\, which gives a monoidal categorification of the skein algebra of a genus zero punctured surface.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:THE HEREDITARY LAWS OF LARGE NUMBERS
DESCRIPTION:The celebrated theorem of Komlos (1967) establishes L^1-boundedness as a sufficient condition for a sequence of measurable functions on a probability space to contain a subsequence along which\, and along whose every further subsequence (“hereditarily”)\, the Cesaro averages converge to a “randomized mean” in the spirit of the Strong law of Large Numbers. We provide conditions not only sufficient\, but also necessary\, for this result\, as well as for the hereditary analogues of the Weak Law of Large Numbers\, of the Hsu-Robbins-Erdos Law of Large Numbers\, and of the Law of the Iterated Logarithm. \n\nJoint work with I. Berkes (Budapest) and W. Schachermayer (Vienna).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The optimal rate of convergence in mean field control
DESCRIPTION:I will discuss the sharp rate of convergence of the value functions of N-particle stochastic control problems to their mean field limit\, for merely Lipschitz mean field costs. For d ≥ 2\, the optimal rate is that of the empirical measures of i.i.d. samples in the 1-Wasserstein distance\, as conjectured by Daudin\, Delarue\, and Jackson\, and it persists with additive common noise. In dimension one\, this benchmark can surprisingly be beaten: cooperating particles outperform independent samples\, and the optimal exponent is 4/7\, strictly between the accuracy of independent sampling (N^{-1/2}) and that of quantization (N^{-1}). The proofs rely on a new control-theoretic technique of recoupled shadow flows and\, in dimension one\, on a Gibbs law implementing the cooperation and a Schrödinger ground-state estimate.
