From global land use change, to resource extraction and consumption, to rapid and ongoing climate change, humans are fundamentally changing our planet. While the geochemical, ecosystem and ecological consequences of anthropogenic caused environmental change are well studied and increasingly understood, the impacts on evolution are less understood. In this talk I will address this problem by seeking to answer a single general question: How does anthropogenic disturbance influence the evolution of life? As a case example, I will describe our work on the the cosmopolitan plant white clover, where we are examining how various anthropogenic disturbances affect all major mechanisms of evolution. I will describe our global studies examining whether urbanization affects phenotypic and genomic evolution. I will then explore whether invasive populations can adapt to novel environments in their invaded range, including the role of functional traits and structural variants across the genome in these adaptations. Finally, I will explore whether populations can adapt to rapid climate change through time in introduced and native ranges. The results from the white clover system provide insight into when species are likely to be able to adapt to anthropogenic disturbance, and when they may be unable to adapt. We ask questions about how microbes respond to stressors like climate change, particularly drought and floods, and land use change like agricultural intensification. How microbes respond can affect a myriad of ecosystem services, including soil fertility and crop growth, and biogeochemical cycles. In this talk I highlight studies in our lab that span microscopic to global. First, I'll talk about how (and whether) we can generalize microbial responses to a global change, like drought. We used a network of rainout shelters to ask whether there were taxonomic or trait-based shifts in microbes under drought, worldwide. We also extend this work to thinking about how microbes interact with plants to buffer plants under drought. Second, I'll talk about a project investigating bacteria that fix nitrogen, and how they interact with both the plant and other organisms in the soil, like fungi. We hypothesized that bacterial-fungal interactions increased nitrogen fixation, benefitting the plant, and potentially reducing reliance on nitrogen fertilizers. With a landmark paper in 1979 titled \u201cSpeciation in North American Field Crickets\u201d, Richard Harrison launched decades of classic studies focused on a single hybrid zone between two closely related species of North American field cricket. In this seminar, I will revisit hypotheses laid out in the classic paper and describe ongoing work to resolve the phylogenetic relationships among North American Gryllus and identify new hybrid zones in this species complex.
