SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cash Plus Psychosocial Interventions for Economic Mobility
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Thomas is an assistant professor of psychology and of organizational studies at the University of Michigan. She integrates the insights of social psychology\, lens of cultural psychology\, and tools of behavioral science to examine and intervene upon psychosocial drivers of poverty and inequality in the U.S. and around the globe. In particular\, her work interrogates relationships among agency\, dignity\, and economic mobility. In this work\, she conducts lab and field experiments across diverse low-income contexts\, including in the U.S.\, sub-Saharan Africa\, and South Asia\, and often through interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships with nonprofits and governments. Her work has been published in journals including Nature and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and in media outlets including Time and Foreign Affairs.\n\nThe Real-World Perspectives on Poverty Solutions speaker series is free and open to the public as well as being a one-credit course for U-M students (SW503). SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Next Steps for Improving Community Partner Compensation at U-M
DESCRIPTION:Community partners—spanning nonprofits\, government agencies\, small businesses\, and individuals with specialized expertise—play a vital role in supporting student learning\, contributing to faculty research\, and enhancing university programming. However\, their recognition and compensation across U-M is inconsistent\, due to U-M’s decentralized and complex administrative and financial systems. Throughout 2026\, units across campus have come together with local community partners to discuss these challenges and generate ideas and tools for improving compensation practices and processes at U-M. \nJoin us on December 4th to learn more about this important work. Participants at this virtual session will:\n\nHear insights from community-engaged faculty & staff\, financial administrators\, and community partners about how U-M units can make community partner compensation more transparent and accessible\;\n\nLearn about new tools\, resources\, and cross-unit collaborations with Procurement & Shared Services designed to improve community partner compensation practices at U-M\; and \n\nLearn ways to get involved and support this ongoing effort. \n\nThe session will include brief presentations about ongoing community partner compensation-related projects and a Q&A.
