SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Robotics Department Seminar Series: Physical Intelligence for Physical Care: Towards Stakeholder-Informed Caregiving Robots in the Real World
DESCRIPTION:Robotics Department Seminar Series (https://robotics.umich.edu/events/robotics-seminar-series/)\nSpeaker: Tapomayukh Bhattacharjee\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Computer Science\, Cornell University\nTitle: \"Physical Intelligence for Physical Care: Towards Stakeholder-Informed Caregiving Robots in the Real World\"\nDate: Tuesday\, October 13\, 2026\nTime: 4:00 - 5:00pm ET\nLocation: FRB 2300 + Zoom\nZoom Link: https://myumi.ch/qwgeM\nMeeting ID: 920 4018 0577\nPasscode: 681199\n\nAbstract: How can we build robots that meaningfully assist people with mobility limitations in their daily lives? To support complex caregiving tasks such as robot-assisted feeding\, bathing\, transferring\, and meal preparation\, robots must physically interact with people and objects in dynamic\, unstructured environments while maintaining safety. In this talk\, I will present an overview of projects from the EmPRISE Lab that showcase fundamental advances in physical robot caregiving. I will highlight how we design stakeholder-informed systems with personalized contact-rich control policies and user functionality- and behavior-aware physical robot assistance. I will also share insights from deploying these systems with real users in real-world settings. Together\, these efforts move us closer to building caregiving robots that are not only technically capable\, but are also safe\, deployable\, and responsive to the real needs of people in care settings.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Tapomayukh \"Tapo\" Bhattacharjee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University where he directs the EmPRISE Lab (https://emprise.cs.cornell.edu/). He completed his Ph.D. in Robotics from Georgia Institute of Technology and was an NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA postdoctoral research associate in Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. His primary research interests are in the area of physical robot caregiving and physical human-robot interaction. He is the recipient of TRI Young Faculty Researcher Award'24\, NSF CAREER Award'23\, AFCEA 40 under 40 Award'22\, and his work has won Best Systems Paper Award at HRI’26\, Best Paper Award at RSS’25\, Best Paper and Student Paper Award Finalist and Best HRI Paper Award Finalist at ICRA’25\, Best Systems Paper Award Finalist at HRI'24\, Best Demo Award at HRI'24\, Best RoboCup Paper Award at IROS’22\, Best Paper Award Finalist and ABB Best Student Paper Award Finalist at IROS’22\, Best Technical Advances Paper Award at HRI'19\, and Best Demonstration Award at NeurIPS’18. His work has also been featured in many media outlets including the BBC\, Reuters\, New York Times\, IEEE Spectrum\, and GeekWire and his robot-assisted feeding work was selected to be one of the best interactive designs of 2019 by Fast Company.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Can AI Help Us Build Better Connections? How Social Robots Are Transforming Human Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nRobots can be highly capable\, but without understanding human preferences\, their utility remains fundamentally limited. This talk advances a framework for human augmentation through embodied social intelligence\, grounded in three key dimensions. First\, human-centered robot design\, where I discuss methods to meaningfully involve people throughout a robot development lifecycle\, while balancing the need for general-purpose systems with the specificity of human needs. Second\, embodied AI systems\, where I introduce my work on robotic hardware fabrication and context-agnostic algorithms that enable robust\, real-world interaction. Third\, robot evaluation in the wild\, focusing on deployments in domains such as healthcare and the need for new metrics that combine experimental rigor with system performance. Drawing from my experience across academia and industry\, including building Astro at Amazon and working on critical AI challenges at Meta\, I highlight open problems at the intersection of AI\, robotics\, and human-centered design. Ultimately\, I argue for a shift in robotics: from intelligence to relationships\, from capability to meaning. Prioritizing human needs\, values\, and lived experiences is not a constraint\; instead it is the path toward building robots that are truly effective\, adaptive\, and accepted.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Robotics Department Alumni Award Seminar: Robotics is inherently multidisciplinary\, and you should be too!
DESCRIPTION:Robotics Alumni Award Seminar \nSpeaker: Emma Reznick\, PhD\nResearch Scientist\, Fauna Robotics\n\nTitle: Robotics is inherently multidisciplinary\, and you should be too! \nDate: Friday\, October 16\, 2026\nTime: 3:00 - 4:15pm ET\nLocation: FRB 2300 with Zoom\nZoom Link: https://myumi.ch/e7Gdj\nMeeting ID: 971 8312 3952\nPasscode: 711990\n\nAbstract: \nThe robot that navigates a warehouse or assists in surgery is never the work of one discipline. It fuses mechanics\, control theory\, vision\, machine learning\, embedded firmware\, and domain-specific knowledge in real time where a bug can destroy the robot or hurt someone near it. The nastiest bugs never sit inside a single discipline\; they hide in the seams between them. A motion policy that looks wrong turns out to be an incorrect friction model.\n\nThis talk walks through a series of real failures and the attempts to fix each one. Every bug started in one domain and was solved in another\, and each one is a case for pairing depth with breadth.\n\nSpeaker Bio: \nEmma Reznick is a Research Scientist with Fauna Robotics\, an Amazon company. Her work focuses on the development of novel robotic platforms and narrowing the sim-to-real gap through modeling and hardware characterization. She got her bachelors in Biochemistry and Electrical Engineering from Colorado College\, and then pursued her PhD with Dr. Robert Gregg at the University of Texas at Dallas (MS\, Biomedical Engineering) and the University of Michigan (PhD Robotics). She now lives in New York City and gets to work with robots every day.
