        "description":"Abstract:\nCulminating in the recently announced launch of the Columbia Fusion Research Center, Fusion at Columbia has been expanding into new directions and with new partners. This presentation will discuss a mix of fundamental research carried out at Columbia, sponsored by the federal government, and research in support of the growing private fusion sector, sponsored directly by industry. Technical topics to be discussed will be in the area fusion systems design, applied plasma physics in support of fusion industry, and new initiatives in fusion technology applied to magnets, blankets, and fuel cycles. The role of partnerships will be emphasized, whether in collaboration with industry, national laboratories, or international partners.\n\n\nBio:\nCarlos Paz-Soldan is an Associate Professor of Applied Physics and Director of the Fusion Research Center at Columbia University in the City of New York. He received his B.Sc.E degree in Engineering Physics from Queen\u2019s University at Kingston in 2007 and his Ph.D degree in Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012. After his Ph.D he worked as a scientist at General Atomics in San Diego until he was appointed with tenure to Columbia in 2021. Prof. Paz-Soldan\u2019s activities are motivated by the desire to solve the scientific and technological challenges standing in the way of harnessing controlled fusion energy on earth. He has contributed particularly to developing solutions for transient off-normal event control in magnetic fusion devices. Prof. Paz-Soldan is the recipient of the Marshall N. Rosenbluth Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Prize in 2013 and the Thomas H. Stix Award for Outstanding Early Career Contributions to Plasma Physics Research in 2021, both from the American Physical Society. He became an APS fellow in 2024.\n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers, industry experts, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students, faculty, and guests.         "description":"Areg Danagoulian will explore how nuclear physics can provide new tools for arms control and treaty verification, from neutron-based techniques for authenticating nuclear warheads to the use of cosmic-ray protons to verify the absence of nuclear weapons in space. His work connects fundamental nuclear physics with practical challenges in international security and nonproliferation.\n\nAreg Danagoulian is an Associate Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT. He did his PhD research in Experimental Nuclear Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Areg\u2019s PhD thesis focused on experiments that used real Compton scattering on the proton at 2-6 GeV, allowing to probe the proton's internal structure and understand how it couples to external excitations. After his PhD Areg worked at Los Alamos as a postdoctoral researcher, and then as a senior scientist at Passport Systems, Inc. (PSI). At PSI Areg focused on the development of Prompt Neutron from Photofission (PNPF) technique, which allows to rapidly detect shielded fissionable materials in the commercial cargo traffic. Areg's current research interests focus on nuclear physics applications in nuclear security, such areas nuclear nonproliferation, technologies for treaty verification, nuclear safeguards, and cargo security.\n\nProf. Danagoulian's research has earned him and his research team a number of important awards, such as:\n\nFellow of the American Physical Society, Forum on Physics and Society (2025). Citation: \u201cFor seminal technological contributions in the field of arms control and cargo security, which significantly benefit international security.\u201d\n\nArms Control Association\u2019s Arms Control Person(s) of the Year award, \u201cFor developing an innovative new nuclear disarmament verification process using neutron beams,\u201d 2020. \n\nAmerican Nuclear Society Radiation Science and Technology Award, \u201cFor technology-critical contributions exploiting nuclear resonance phenomena for warhead verification in nuclear disarmament and nuclear detection techniques in cargo security,\u201d 2019\n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers, industry experts, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students, faculty, and guests.
