But that promise is harder to keep every year. The Information Age has transformed into information overload; it\u2019s more difficult than ever to know what to trust, and in cities and towns across America, there are far fewer independent reporters demanding government transparency and holding our officials to account.\n\nJoin Christopher Baxter, 2016 Knight-Wallace Fellow and founder of the Pennsylvania nonprofit newsroom Spotlight PA, for a discussion on how local news lost its way, why the future of our free society and the future of a free press are inextricably linked \u2014 as the founders understood in 1776 \u2014 and what journalists and the public can do to ensure the press can fulfill its constitutional role in service to \"We the People.\"\n\nThis is an in-person event and will not be live-streamed. However, a recording of the lecture will be available on our website following the event.\n\nAbout the Speaker\nChristopher Baxter is the CEO, president and founding editor of Spotlight PA, a nonpartisan, nonprofit newsroom producing investigative and public-service journalism for Pennsylvania, where he oversees all aspects of the organization. His work as an investigative reporter and editor has prompted meaningful change, prompting new laws and regulations, criminal investigations, resignations and legislative hearings. He received the 2014 Livingston Award for local reporting for an investigation that exposed how weak oversight allowed New Jersey private schools for students with disabilities, despite being fully funded by taxpayers, to engage in questionable spending practices. As a 2016 Knight-Wallace Fellow, Baxter explored how to support, promote and integrate enterprise journalism in digital-first newsrooms.\n\nAbout the Graham Hovey Lecture\nThe annual Graham Hovey Lecture recognizes a Knight-Wallace journalist whose career exemplifies the benefits of a fellowship at the University of Michigan and whose ensuing work is at the forefront of our national conversations. Thayer, at the standard charge of $10\/vehicle.\n\nLonnie G. Bunch III is the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian. He assumed his position June 16, 2019. As Secretary, he oversees 21 museums, 21 libraries, the National Zoo, numerous research centers, and several education units and centers. Two new museums\u2014the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women\u2019s History Museum\u2014are in development. Bunch was the founding director of the Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch chronicled the creation of the museum in his book, *A Fool\u2019s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush, Obama, and Trump*, and is the first historian to be Secretary of the Institution. Since 2024, Bunch has been Honorary Professor of Practice at Queen\u2019s University Belfast. A member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Bunch received France\u2019s highest award, The Legion of Honor, in 2021.\n\nLynette Clemetson is Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists, home of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists and the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists at the University of Michigan. She came to the university from NPR where she was Senior Director of Strategy and Content Initiatives, developing and guiding projects across broadcast, digital and events to develop new audiences. Her career in journalism spans newspapers, magazines and audio across a range of platforms. As a reporter, she was a Washington-based correspondent for *The New York Times *and *Newsweek*, writing about politics, social issues and demographic change. Prior to her domestic correspondent work, she was an international correspondent for *Newsweek *based in Hong Kong, where she covered the former British colony\u2019s return to Chinese rule in 1997.
