SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Donia Human Rights Center and Weiser Diplomacy Center Lecture | Addressing Human Rights and Democracy: The Challenges and Opportunities for Business
DESCRIPTION:In his book *Conscience Incorporated: Pursuing Profits while Protecting Human Rights* https://myumi.ch/JPnR4\, Michael Posner examines the evolving role of large multinational companies in addressing human rights challenges tied to their business models\, in global supply chains\, in the tech sector and among investors. In the first part of this talk he will reflect on these topics. Posner also will address the crisis in democracy in the United States and in many parts of the world. Today societies are increasingly polarized\, fueled in part by social media and now artificial intelligence. Posner will examine this\, the potential for business leaders to support democratic norms and the rule of law\, and why they have been reluctant to exert it.\n\nRSVP here: https://myumi.ch/y1AQV\n \n Michael Posner is the Jerome Kohlberg Professor of Ethics and Finance at NYU's Stern School of Business. He is the Director of the Center for Business and Human Rights at the School\, the first-ever human rights center at a business school. Prior to joining NYU Stern\, Michael served in the Obama Administration from 2009-2013 as Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy\, Human Rights and Labor. From 1978 to 2009\, he led Human Rights First\, a New York-based human rights advocacy organization.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at umichhumanrights@umich.edu.
