SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Art in the Arb: Creative Writing & Movement in the Arb
DESCRIPTION:This interactive\, interdisciplinary workshop blends creative writing and creative movement\, offering participants of all levels a space to explore personal and environmental narratives and shared experience. No previous writing or dance experience is required. Working both solo and collaboratively\, participants will co-create and translate short dance and written pieces\, discovering how movement and language can shape and inform one another. The workshop culminates in a brief sharing and reflection session\, where participants present their creations and discuss their process. These reflective moments celebrate our individual and collective relationships with the Arboretum\, and the community built in our short time together.\n\nAbout the Teaching Artist: Kara Roseborough is a multi-disciplinary artist specializing in dance\, creative writing\, and theatre. She holds an MFA in Dance and a Certificate in World Performance Studies from the University of Michigan\, a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Utah\, and teaching certifications in Grades I-V of the Cecchetti Ballet method.

DESCRIPTION:Curious about the birds who live on or migrate through U-M's campus?\n\nEach fall and spring\, the skies above the U.S. are home to immense seasonal movements of billions of birds. Unfortunately\, building collisions are also a major threat to birds during this journey. To improve how the Ann Arbor campus protects birds\, OCSI partners with the U-M Museum of Zoology to conduct seasonal bird collision inventories during migration. The Weiser Hall \"catwalk\" was identified as an issue during the 2025-2026 surveys. A new window mural designed by a student artist Suher Salim through an Arts Initiative sponsored contest will make this area more visible to birds\, decreasing the chances of a window collision for avian migrants and year-round campus residents.\n\nThe event and pizza availability starts at 1:00PM\, with formal remarks regarding U-M's overall bird-safety work and next steps at 1:30PM. DESCRIPTION:The SeAH Korean Art Song Gala is a high-profile Korean Performing Arts Initiative event. The first half of the concert will feature student performances of Korean song\, interwoven with historical and cultural narration by SMTD’s Dr. Matthew Thompson\, and will end with a performance by SMTD’s alum Jack Morin (’25)\, whose Korean song performances have garnered millions of views online. The second half of the concert will showcase the world-renowned Korean soprano Sumi Jo\, joined by Thompson at the piano. \n\nThe concert marks the first time that Korean song performance has been taught at U-M and is generously supported by the SeAH corporation and numerous campus entities: the Arts Initiative\, the Jessye Norman Fund\, the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, the Nam Center for Korean Studies\, and the Office of the President. DESCRIPTION:\n\nVijay Gupta is a violinist\, curator\, and music director who explores the human condition through music. His performing career has taken him from Carnegie Hall — where he debuted at age eight — to county jails\, Skid Row shelters\, and state psychiatric hospitals\, finding in each the same essential questions about what music is for\, and who it is for. At eleven\, he made his international solo debut with the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. At nineteen\, he became the youngest violinist ever to join the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, where he performed for eleven seasons. The Los Angeles Times has called his playing \"brilliant\, bold and gripping\,\" and Publishers Weekly praised his memoir Restrung as a \"a virtuoso performance” that illustrates how music \"reaches the broken places within us and the broken places between us.\"\n\nA recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship and honoree on the Time 100 Next list\, Gupta is the founder and artistic director of Street Symphony\, a nonprofit that brings live music into shelters\, clinics\, county jails\, state hospitals\, and reentry programs across Los Angeles. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Va' Pensiero: Storie ambulanti (Walking Stories) (2013)\, followed by a conversation and Q&A with Ethiopian-Italian filmmaker Dagmawi Yimer.\n\nA leading voice in migrant cinema in Italy\, Yimer is also a co-founder of the Archivio delle Memorie Migranti\, a collective project dedicated to documenting migration from the perspectives of migrants and preserving their stories as part of Italy's contemporary cultural memory.\n\nVa' Pensiero follows the lives of Senegalese street vendors in Italy while examining anti-Black racism\, migration\, labor\, and everyday forms of exclusion. Beginning with the aftermath of the 2011 racist attack in Florence that killed two Senegalese men\, the film explores how migrant communities negotiate belonging within contemporary Italian society. Through multilingual testimony—including Italian\, Wolof\, and French—and observational documentary practice\, Va' Pensiero challenges conventional narratives of migration by foregrounding the voices and lived experiences of migrants themselves.\n\nThe screening will be followed by a conversation with Yimer about the making of Va' Pensiero\, documentary filmmaking as a form of witnessing and political storytelling\, and the representation of migration and Black life in contemporary Italy.\n\nThe event is part of “Migration\, Memory\, and the Politics of Witnessing: A Residency with Filmmaker Dagmawi Yimer\,” October 7–9\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:As people working in the humanities and the arts\, we know our work matters–to our fields\, to our disciplines\, and to society. We have seen how the arts and humanities transform perception\, provide expertise\, and help people grapple with the biggest questions about what it means to be human and to live in an increasingly interconnected\, yet often divided world. And\, in both the arts and humanities\, we know UM faculty are contributing to their disciplines in deeply meaningful ways. \n\nYet\, for all we know about these positive effects\, arts and humanities research is often imagined to be at odds with the metric-driven language of “impact”--a term often seen as imposed from fields outside the arts and humanities. At the same time\, “impact” has become the dominant framework for measuring the value of academic research. As a result\, arts and humanities faculty are often called upon to describe our “impact” in ways that are legible to University leadership and funding imperatives\, even as we feel uneasy about how to answer such calls in ways that are authentic to our work. How do we avoid finding ourselves outside terms that are increasingly important in the fight for the continued growth and resilience of higher education in the U.S?\n\n“What’s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter” is a series of events slated for October 29 & 30 on UM’s Ann Arbor campus. A joint initiative of the UM Arts Initiative\, Office of Vice President of Research (OVPR)\, and the Institute for Humanities\, the gathering will serve arts and humanities faculty seeking more ways to discuss their work in terms that are legible within the ascendant impact paradigm\, while also ensuring that those terms are authentic to our disciplines\, methods\, and creative practice. Through a public conversation\, facilitated workshop\, keynote from UM leadership\, and a panel with funders\, the 1.5 day long event will bring together experts–those engaging “impact” in their research\, those in leadership\, and those community partners with whom we work–and put them in conversation with arts and humanities leadership and researchers at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:What’s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter
DESCRIPTION:As people working in the humanities and the arts\, we know our work matters–to our fields\, to our disciplines\, and to society. We have seen how the arts and humanities transform perception\, provide expertise\, and help people grapple with the biggest questions about what it means to be human and to live in an increasingly interconnected\, yet often divided world. And\, in both the arts and humanities\, we know UM faculty are contributing to their disciplines in deeply meaningful ways. \n\nYet\, for all we know about these positive effects\, arts and humanities research is often imagined to be at odds with the metric-driven language of “impact”--a term often seen as imposed from fields outside the arts and humanities. At the same time\, “impact” has become the dominant framework for measuring the value of academic research. As a result\, arts and humanities faculty are often called upon to describe our “impact” in ways that are legible to University leadership and funding imperatives\, even as we feel uneasy about how to answer such calls in ways that are authentic to our work. How do we avoid finding ourselves outside terms that are increasingly important in the fight for the continued growth and resilience of higher education in the U.S?\n\n“What’s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter” is a series of events slated for October 29 & 30 on UM’s Ann Arbor campus. A joint initiative of the UM Arts Initiative\, Office of Vice President of Research (OVPR)\, and the Institute for Humanities\, the gathering will serve arts and humanities faculty seeking more ways to discuss their work in terms that are legible within the ascendant impact paradigm\, while also ensuring that those terms are authentic to our disciplines\, methods\, and creative practice. Through a public conversation\, facilitated workshop\, keynote from UM leadership\, and a panel with funders\, the 1.5 day long event will bring together experts–those engaging “impact” in their research\, those in leadership\, and those community partners with whom we work–and put them in conversation with arts and humanities leadership and researchers at the University of Michigan.
