At eleven\, he made his international solo debut with the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. At nineteen\, he became the youngest violinist ever to join the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, where he performed for eleven seasons. The Los Angeles Times has called his playing \"brilliant\, bold and gripping\,\" and Publishers Weekly praised his memoir Restrung as a \"a virtuoso performance” that illustrates how music \"reaches the broken places within us and the broken places between us.\"\n\nA recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship and honoree on the Time 100 Next list\, Gupta is the founder and artistic director of Street Symphony\, a nonprofit that brings live music into shelters\, clinics\, county jails\, state hospitals\, and reentry programs across Los Angeles. Over fifteen years\, Street Symphony has delivered more than 3\,000 performances and workshops. The New Yorker called it \"a formidable new model for how musical institutions should engage with the world around them.\" \n\nIn addition to his work with Street Symphony\, Gupta performs as a soloist and as a founding member of the Darshan Piano Trio. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Renowned for his expressive draftsmanship and mastery of performance through movement\, Baxter has animated some of animation’s most iconic characters\, including Belle in Beauty and the Beast\, Rafiki in The Lion King\, Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame\, and the title character in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. His work has also appeared in films including The Prince of Egypt\, Kung Fu Panda\, How to Train Your Dragon\, and Enchanted\, among many others.\n\nThroughout his career\, Baxter has held creative and leadership roles at Walt Disney Feature Animation\, DreamWorks Animation\, and Netflix Animation\, where he currently serves as vice president of animation. Working across both hand-drawn and computer animation\, he has helped shape performances in some of the medium’s most recognizable films while also teaching and mentoring artists throughout the industry. She is the author of A History of Half-Birds (Milkweed Editions\, 2024) and If I Call This Cave a Garden (YesYes Books\, forthcoming 2027).\n\nHer creative work is rooted in the precarious landscape of the Gulf Coast\, where her practice spans poetry\, sculpture\, painting\, film\, choreography\, and the tendons in between. An iconic symbol of inclusivity\, strength\, and courage\, this newly imagined U-M dragon\, with its futuristic flair\, technological creativity and sustainable materials\, invites students and the entire community to re-envision a classic cultural symbol for contemporary times.\n\nPresented by the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies.
