        "description":"Mapping class groups of finite-type surfaces have often been studied via their action on various graphs, whose vertices correspond to homotopy classes of certain arcs or curves on the surface, with edges between homotopically disjoint arcs or curves. In 2006, Ivanov posed a \u200b\"metaconjecture\": every object naturally associated to a surface, which admits an action of the mapping class group, with sufficiently rich structure has its group of automorphisms be the mapping class group. This is true for a lot of these arc\/curve graphs \u2014 in particular, this means that the combinatorial structure of these graphs perfectly captures the topology of the surface. \n\nIn this talk, we shall explore Ivanov\u2019s metaconjecture for mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces. We shall focus on the action on \u201cthe grand arc graph\u201d, first introduced by Bar-Natan\u2014Verberne, which is an infinite-diameter, hyperbolic graph defined on a large class of infinite-type surfaces. This talk contains joint work with G. Shaji.",

        "description":"I will discuss a newly identified example of a plane rational map that has constant Jacobian determinant relative to the natural holomorphic volume form on the algebraic torus.  A distinguishing feature is that it `tropicalizes' as a self-map of the circle that is topologically conjugate to angle doubling.  Using this and post-composing with an appropriate monomial map we get a new and rather different example of a rational surface map that is not birationally conjugate to any algebraically stable map.  This work, joint with Chase Bender and Holly Krieger, relies on some AI input, but maybe not where you'd guess it does.",
