SUMMARY:Presentation:Protecting the Freedom to Read: A Community Response Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The final offering for OLLI’s programing in support of the American Library Association’s (ALA) Banned Books Week is a panel discussion on the ALA’s broad topic for the year “Let Books Be: Protect the Freedom to Read.” A panel representing the community’s school and public libraries and an independent bookstore will address this topic.\n\nPanelists:\n\nLucy Lawrence is the Events & Communications Coordinator at Serendipity Books in Chelsea\, Michigan. Lucy is originally from Florida and recently earned her MSW at the University of Michigan with a concentration in policy and political social work. She contributes to the selection of books available for purchase and to the bookstore’s full schedule of community events for all ages.\n\nJaclyn Martin is a middle school librarian in the Troy School District and Intellectual Freedom Chair for the Michigan Association of School Librarians. She recently finished the Law for Librarians training offered through the American Library Association.\n\nJulianne Smith has been a librarian for over 30 years and is currently the Assistant Director of the Ypsilanti Library where her responsibilities include chairing the Request for Reconsideration Committee (material challenges) and organizing the annual Banned Books Week exhibit at YDL-Whittaker.\n\nThe discussion will be moderated by Marjorie Oliver\, a member of the Banned Books Week Committee\, Chair of OLLI Reads\, and former community college composition and literature faculty member.\n\n*The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at U-M provides educational opportunities for older adults\, designed by older adults. SUMMARY:Presentation:Evenings with OLLI: When Driving Changes: How Automation Keeps People Moving
DESCRIPTION:5:30-6pm - Refreshments and Socializing\n6-7pm - Program\n7-7:30pm - Q&A\n\nHow does our driving change as we age and how can automation benefit us? This presentation examines how technology\, particularly advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated functions\, can serve as a tool to support safe mobility in later life. We critically look at technologies and assess how they benefit drivers. Results highlight high availability of ADAS among older drivers but also gaps in training and understanding that may limit safety benefits. \n\nDr. Renée St. Louis is the Head of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute's (UMTRI) Behavioral Sciences Group\, studying social and behavioral factors shaping transportation safety and mobility across the lifespan. She leads research with diverse participants and has co-authored a book on older adult mobility. \n\nDr. Arpan Kusari is an UMTRI research faculty focused on robust challenges in vehicle automation.
