During this seminar, you will learn which modes are feasible in which contexts with a particular focus on mobile phone surveys.\n\nDr. Abigail (Abba) Greenleaf is an Assistant Professor at Columbia\u2019s Mailman School of Public Health. She received her PhD from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, her Master of Public Health from Columbia and BS in public health from George Washington University. She is a public health demographer whose research focuses on (1) women\u2019s reproductive health across geographies and the lifespan and; (2) intensive longitudinal data collection. By integrating these areas, she is creating innovative findings for international sexual and reproductive health population sciences. She enjoys leveraging innovative data collection approaches to generate high-frequency, cost- efficient population data for public health action. Survey research has been a part of her research portfolio since she was a Doctoral student and wrote her dissertation about the feasibility of mobile phone surveys to create population-based estimates in Burkina Faso, West Africa. One of the ways they do this is by considering the world around them, paying attention to social issues and starting to understand their society and their place in it. Laws and policies signal to young people what society thinks of their value, their role in society and their opportunities for the future. But the experience of growing up in the post-Roe v. Wade era looks very different from that before the 50-year precedent was overturned in 2022. Following the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision, two-thirds of U.S. adolescents now live in a state with severely restricted or no legal abortion access. As a result, today\u2019s young people are coming of age in what has been termed an \u201cera of rights retractions.\u201d This talk will provide a data-based account of how, following Dobbs, the experience of adolescence and young adulthood in America has fundamentally changed and how rights retractions are not only affecting those who need an abortion \u2013 they are shaping an entire generation.\n\nBiography:\nDr. Julie Maslowsky is Associate Professor of Health Behavior and Clinical Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, Associate Professor of Health Behavior and Health Equity at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and Research Associate Professor at the UM Institute for Social Research. She is a developmental psychologist and population health scientist who studies adolescent health, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health including contraception and abortion. The project\u2019s overarching goal is to demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of leveraging modern transaction data for economic measurement, pointing toward a future in which official economic statistics are rebuilt using 21st-century data and technology. The seminar will present new measures of food-at-home inflation and evaluate them on two fronts: how they compare to current official statistics and what they offer as novel measures that more accurately capture the dynamics of consumer choice. His current work focuses on reengineering official economic statistics through his leadership of the Re-Engineering Statistics Using Economic Transactions (RESET) Project and the Economic Measurement Research Institute (EMRI) at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).\n\nShapiro has a career-long interest in official statistics. He has served as chair of the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee (FESAC)\u2014the official advisory committee for the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis\u2014as well as chair of the American Economic Association\u2019s Committee on Economic Statistics (AEAStat) and a member of the National Academy of Sciences\u2019 Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT). Shapiro currently chairs the Academic Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.\n\nBefore joining the faculty at the University of Michigan, Shapiro was a faculty member at Yale University. I\u2019ll review some of the key ideas discussed in the book, including likelihood methods versus estimating equations, the Bayes versus frequentist controversy and a suggested resolution, random effects modeling, the dual role of randomization in surveys and clinical trials, causal inference and alternative paradigms of sample survey inference.\n\nRod Little is Richard D. Remington Distinguished University Professor of Biostatistics Emeritus at the University of Michigan, where he also holds emeritus appointments in the Department of Statistics and the Institute for Social Research. From 2010-2012 he was the inaugural Associate Director for Research and Methodology and Chief Scientist at the U.S. Census Bureau. He has over 250 publications, notably on methods for the analysis of data with missing values and model-based survey inference, and the application of statistics to diverse scientific areas, including medicine, demography, economics, psychiatry, aging and the environment. Little is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine. In 2005, Little was awarded the American Statistical Association\u2019s Wilks Medal for research contributions, and he gave the President\u2019s Invited Address at the Joint Statistical Meetings.
