DESCRIPTION:Greek and Roman art is typically known for its lifelike marble statues\, but ancient artists also played with color\, pattern\, and shape in ways that feel surprisingly modern. This virtual Flash Talk introduces curator Nicola Barham’s *Ancient Abstractions*—a new special exhibition that looks beyond naturalism to reveal Roman art that today would be considered abstract. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Human Odyssey on the Roof of the World: Adaptations and Resilience on the Tibetan Plateau
DESCRIPTION:The Tibetan Plateau—often described as the “Roof of the World”—represents one of the most extreme environments ever inhabited by humans. With an average elevation exceeding 4000 meters\, the region poses formidable challenges including hypoxia\, harsh climate\, and highly variable ecological productivity. Understanding how and when humans successfully adapted to these conditions remains a central question in high-altitude archaeology. This talk synthesizes recent archaeological\, paleoenvironmental\, and genetic research to reassess the long-term history of human occupation on the Tibetan Plateau. Evidence from Paleolithic sites indicates that foraging populations began exploring the plateau margins as early as the Middle Pleistocene\, with increasing evidence for sustained human presence during the Late Pleistocene and early Holocene. Rather than viewing the plateau as permanently settled only after the arrival of agriculture and pastoralism\, new research suggests that indigenous foragers played a crucial role in establishing viable lifeways in high-altitude environments.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the 2026 David Noel Freedman Lecture with Dr. Susanne Paulus\, Associate Professor of Assyriology and Curator of the Tablet Collection at the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC) at the University of Chicago.\n\nMichigan League\, Vandenberg Room\, 2nd Floor\nMonday\, October 26th\, 4 - 6pm\n\nAbstract:\n\nWriting history is telling stories. The stories we tell about ancient economies\, including that of Late Bronze Age Babylonia\, are often shaped by preconceptions about commodities\, credit\, and debt. Drawing on tablets excavated in cities such as Babylon\, Nippur\, and Ur in modern Iraq\, this lecture follows barley through a series of transactions involving taxes\, loans\, investments\, and even two piglets. Barley was both a major food source and an economic staple\, but the documents reveal much more than subsistence. They offer alternative ways of understanding credit\, debt\, and investment in Late Bronze Age Babylonia.\n \nBiography:\n\nSusanne Paulus is an Associate Professor of Assyriology and Curator of the Tablet Collection at the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC) at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on the social\, legal\, and economic history of Late Bronze Age Babylonia. Her current book project\, Banking with Barley\, supported by the American Council of Learned Societies\, explores credit\, debt\, and economic life in Kassite Babylonia. She is also an epigraphist for the Nippur excavations and is involved in the publication of cuneiform texts from the city of Babylon.

DESCRIPTION:Set in the World Heritage Site of MohenjoDaro (Sindh\, Pakistan)\, Visualizing Care approaches archaeological data visualization through deep mapping. Experimenting with multimodal and accessible forms of archaeological data presentation\, this study explores how care through time can be documented. Within an archaeological context\, the materiality of care can be seen through the intentional making/unmaking of urban design\, architectural features\, and infrastructure. Within a historical and contemporary framework\, care can be visualized through conservation and the relationships between caretakers and the site itself\, drawing attention to the affective aspects of archaeological research. This transdisciplinary project utilizes archival material\, LiDAR and 3-dimensional artifact captures\, ethnographic conversations\, GIS mapping\, sound\, and experiments with mudbrick\, to explore the many different ways of knowing the ancient city of MohenjoDaro.\n\n\nUzma Z. Rizvi is Professor of Anthropology and Urban Studies\, in the Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies\, Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn\, NY. She is also a visiting faculty at Shah Abdul Latif University in Khairpur\, Pakistan. Dr. Rizvi’s work intentionally interweaves archaeology with cultural criticism\, philosophy\, critical theory\, art\, and design. With over two decades of work on decolonizing methodologies\, intersectional and feminist strategies\, and transdisciplinary approaches\, her work has intentionally pushed disciplinary limits\, and demanded ethical decolonial praxis at all levels of engagement\, from teaching to research. She is the PI of the Laboratory for Integrated Archaeological Visualization and Heritage (liavh.org)\, currently working at the 3rd millennium BCE world heritage site of MohenjoDaro\, Pakistan.\n\nThe lecture begins at 4PM EST\, in person at the Kelsey Museum (Room 125). DESCRIPTION:At the archaeological site of Oxyrhynchus\, Egypt\, researchers discovered a 2\,000-year-old mummified individual with a sealed papyrus packet containing verses from Book 2 of Homer’s *Iliad*. Dr. Leah Mascia coordinated the collaborative effort to conserve\, identify\, and interpret the heavily degraded text\, revealing the first known example of a literary work serving a functional role in Egyptian mummification.
