We will also introduce facilitation practices and then engage with relevant scenarios that will help us learn to work with others to address conflict in healthy ways. Ultimately, this workshop is about helping faculty become bridge builders and change agents for a more vibrant democracy. After a year researching religion and Kory\u014f history at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, he joined U-M's Department of Asian Languages and Cultures in 2011. His research covers East Asian religions, Buddhism, Chan and Zen, traditional medicine, and premodern Korean cultural and economic histories. He has published widely on Japanese Zen, Zen master Hakuin Ekaku, traditional medicine in Japan, Korean Buddhism and S\u014fn monasticism, and Korean film. Major publications include *Buddhas and Ancestors: Religion and Wealth in Fourteenth-Century Korea* (2018), *Transgression in Korea* (2018), and translations like *The Orthodox Path of Seon* (2023) and *Gongan Collections I* (2012). He is currently co-editing a volume on Kory\u014f and contributing to the Cambridge Histories Series, and is the recipient of awards including the Puri Award, Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship, and Kyujanggak Fellowship.\n\nJi Yeon Hong \/ University of Michigan\nJi Yeon Hong is an associate professor of political science and the Korea Foundation Chair Professor of Korean Politics at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on authoritarian politics, democratization, political violence, and elite behavior under dictatorship in East Asia. Her scholarship has been widely published in leading field publications, including *the American Journal of Political Science*, *British Journal of Political Science*, and *Journal of Politics*. \n\nHer academic path is deeply rooted in the historic political movements she witnessed firsthand. Raised in Seoul, South Korea, her experience observing the country's democratization during the 1980s and 1990s inspired her to pursue political science. After earning her Bachelor\u2019s and Master\u2019s degrees from Seoul National University and her Ph.D. from New York University, she served on the faculty at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) from 2014 to 2022, where she observed another defining wave of pro-democracy activism before joining U-M.\n\nDavid Dolinger \/ Former Peace Corps Volunteer\nDavid L. Dolinger is a scientist and global health professional currently working in India. He has played key roles in the development and commercialization of diagnostic solutions with a focus on their practical implementation and use in low- and middle-income countries. His work sits at the intersection of laboratory science, regulatory rigor, and a long-standing commitment to social justice and patient-centered care. Over the years he has also taken on advisory and collaborative roles with diagnostic manufacturers and global health partners focused on expanding access to high-quality testing in low- and middle-income countries. \n\nHowever, this passion and drive would not have fermented to the level if it had not been for his life-forming experiences as a Peace corps volunteer in the Republic of Korea. At the young age of 22, he travelled for the first time outside of the United States, landing in south Jeolla province in the small county of Yeongam. He worked in the local health center focusing on tuberculosis control. It was there that he started to understand how diagnostic tests are the foundation of good health care. It was his experiences in and participation in the May 18 Democratization Movement, in Gwangju that grounded him and has driven him through his life to utilize his talents and understanding of diagnostics to focus on those that are marginalized and ignored.\n\nNa Kyung-taek \/ Former Photojournalist\nNa Kyung-taek, former head of the Yonhap News Bureau for Gwangju and Jeonnam, began his career in journalism in 1967. As a pioneering photojournalist, he captured the frontlines of the May 18 Democratization Movement, exposing the truth to the world through his lens. His unwavering journalistic integrity earned him both the Courageous Journalist Award and the Korea Journalist Award.\n\nFollowing his retirement, Mr. Na continued to serve the public through university lectures and welfare foundation work. He has remained dedicated to sharing the historical significance of May 18 globally, authoring books such as *When That Day in May Comes Again and We Saw*, and hosting photo exhibitions across South Korea and internationally, including in Germany and the United States.\n\nSohl Lee \/ Stony Brook University\nSohl Lee is associate professor of art history at Stony Brook University (SUNY), specializing in modern and contemporary Asian art, decolonial visual culture, socially engaged art, and ecological art history, with a particular interest in oceanic and transpacific frameworks. Her first book, *The Minjung Art Movement: Decolonization and Democracy in South Korea* (Duke University Press, 2026), historicizes an influential movement of activist art from the 1970s and 1980s. Her current book project, *Seaweed as Method: Art History with Oceans, Multispecies Life, and Empire* examines the global visual cultures of seaweeds through the intertwined lenses of ecology, decolonization, food sovereignty, and Indigenous onto-epistemologies. She is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor\u2019s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2020) and has received grants and fellowships from the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC), the Korea Foundation, the Korean Ministry of Culture, the Academy of Korean Studies, the Getty Research Institute, and the Andy Warhol Foundation, among others.\n\nHayana Kim \/ Ohio State University\nHayana Kim is an assistant professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the Ohio State University. As an interdisciplinary performance and media historian of twentieth- and twenty-first-century South Korea, her research centers on cultures of democracy in contemporary South Korea. Her teaching is at the intersections of Korean studies, Asian diasporic studies, and theatre, performance, and media studies. Kim is currently working on her book manuscript entitled *Making P\u2019an for a New World: The Kwangju Uprising, Women, and the Performativity of South Korean Democracy*. This project, based on extensive archival and ethnographic research, investigates the role of the body and affect in advancing democracy in South Korea by illuminating various forms of performances that women in Kwangju and in broader Ch\u014flla Province created to bring out insurgent cultural spaces where deaths disavowed by the state and concealed from the public eye emerge into communal memories. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in *Journal of Asian Studies*, *Asian Theatre Journal*, and in edited collections published by Cambridge University Press, Chonnam National University, among others. She received her Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Theatre and Drama at Northwestern University.\n\nThierry Bonzon \/ Universit\u00e9 Gustave Eiffel\nThierry Bonzon, associate professor (Ma\u00eetre de conf\u00e9rences) in contemporary history at Universit\u00e9 Gustave Eiffel, conducts research at the intersection of First World War history and the historical analysis of photography as a primary source. His first line of inquiry examines the local dynamics of wartime sacrifice, social policy, and pacifist movements\u2014notably explored through the \"La France p\u00e9titionne\" project and the co-organization of the international conference Les d\u00e9fenseurs de la paix, 1899\u20131917, which integrated Peace Studies into French historiography. His second field explores photojournalism and image-based history through two distinct geographical and temporal contexts: a collective project analyzing over 2,000 photographer-correspondents for l'Humanit\u00e9 documenting social and urban changes in the Paris region (1950s\u20131990s), and a current investigation into the photographic archives of the May 1980 Gwangju Uprising in South Korea. The founders looked to the Romans as an ideal for their own republican aspirations: institutions that tempered the excesses of the *populus*; statesmen like Cicero who projected an unflinching defense of the Republic; and stories that described their own experiment of strangers fleeing from their homes to carve out a new community from the wilderness. But the United States also inherited another aspect of Rome that grew out of these rugged, founding stories. It was not the enlightened, republican body but the gladiatorial body that emerged as a rival conception of what an American looks like. The gladiatorial body, which received prominence in outlawed, bare-knuckle boxing, as well as the theater, was physically imposing, violent, anti-intellectual, and brash. This talk takes us inside the worlds of the gladiator and bare-knuckle boxer to understand their allure as images of the citizen body.\n\nJoin us in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum\u2019s Newberry Hall to hear from Dr. Dean Hammer, the John W. Wetzel Professor of Classics and Professor of Government at Franklin and Marshall College. For We Hold These Truths, her new exhibition opening at UMMA in October 2026, artist Holly Bass looks to three of those anniversary years\u20141876, 1976, and 2026 to explore how national ideals are staged in public, preserved in private, and passed down through generations. \n\nIn this talk, Bass will discuss the ideas behind We Hold These Truths, her process of transforming UMMA\u2019s iconic Apse into an environment, and the role art plays in helping communities consider these varied histories. Drawing from her practice across performance, visual art, theater, writing, and engagement, Bass will offer a preview of the exhibition and explain how historic home museums inspired this new body of work.\n\nBass is the 2026 Roman J. Witt Artist In Residence and an award-winning artist and cultural worker based in Washington, DC. Her work\u2014held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\u2014frequently engages communities through workshops, devised theater, and participatory installations and explores themes of American history, generational labor, and liberation. \n\nBass has been recognized with awards for multiple art forms. She received a 2024 Washington Award for art and social justice. She is a 2022 MAP Fund recipient for theater, a 2020 Live Feed Resident Artist at New York Live Arts for choreography and dance and a 2021\u201322 Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow. She performed at the 2022 Venice Biennale as part of Loophole of Retreat, Simone Leigh\u2019s special project for the U.S. Pavilion. She regularly contributes book reviews to the New York Times and was the first journalist to put the term \u201chip hop theater\u201d into print in a 1999 article for American Theatre magazine. Bass directed an arts program for adjudicated teens in DC\u2019s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services from 2014 to 2019. From 2019 to 2025, she served as national director of Turnaround Arts at the Kennedy Center, a program that increases access to the arts in under-resourced elementary and middle schools. She studied modern dance under Viola Farber and creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College before earning her Master\u2019s degree from Columbia University\u2019s Graduate School of Journalism. In fall 2026, Bass will also be a Towsley Policymaker in Residence at the U-M Ford School of Public Policy.\n\nWe Hold These Truths opens at UMMA on October 3, 2026. As Secretary, he oversees 21 museums, 21 libraries, the National Zoo, numerous research centers, and several education units and centers. Two new museums\u2014the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women\u2019s History Museum\u2014are in development. Bunch was the founding director of the Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch chronicled the creation of the museum in his book, *A Fool\u2019s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush, Obama, and Trump*, and is the first historian to be Secretary of the Institution. Since 2024, Bunch has been Honorary Professor of Practice at Queen\u2019s University Belfast. A member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Bunch received France\u2019s highest award, The Legion of Honor, in 2021.\n\nLynette Clemetson is Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists, home of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists and the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists at the University of Michigan. She came to the university from NPR where she was Senior Director of Strategy and Content Initiatives, developing and guiding projects across broadcast, digital and events to develop new audiences. Her career in journalism spans newspapers, magazines and audio across a range of platforms. As a reporter, she was a Washington-based correspondent for *The New York Times *and *Newsweek*, writing about politics, social issues and demographic change. Prior to her domestic correspondent work, she was an international correspondent for *Newsweek *based in Hong Kong, where she covered the former British colony\u2019s return to Chinese rule in 1997.
