DESCRIPTION:The Raoul Wallenberg Institute\, in conjunction with Talking Maize and Blue\, the Communications and Media department\, and Program in Transcultural Studies invites you to attend three FREE events (with food provided!) on October 5th\, October 6th\, and October 8th!\n\n1) How to Talk: A Dinner Workshop with a Game Come meet new people and beta test\nHow to Talk: A Class in a Box. This retro card deck will teach you old-timey conversation skills to build connection faster\, facilitate authentic sharing\, and navigate differences gracefully. Not like any class you will find in a classroom\, the evening will be filled with lighthearted activities to practice the art of talking. Pizza will be served. Monday\, October 5th from 5-7pm in North Quad’s Space 2435.\n\n2) Pizza and Playdecks Come play The Pluralism Playdeck\, a low-key scaffolded card\ngame designed to allow university students to practice the soft skills they need to\nengage in compassionate and honest conversations about hot-button issues across\nideological and demographic differences. You'll learn about yourself\, others\, and develop a skill set that will serve you well in both social and professional settings. Lunch will be served. Free copies of the Pluralism Playdeck will be available to take home. Tuesday\, October 6th from 12:00-1:30 in the Rackham West Conference Room.\n\n3) The Open Spoon: Belonging Join us for a facilitated evening of low-key storytelling on a theme. Bring a story or just come to listen. Liz Barney from the Open Spoon will facilitate this informal exchange of stories about a time when participants felt a sense of belonging. DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan is an institution with diverse communities\, interests and opinions. In Fall 2024\, the Faculty Senate Office launched this series – Political Speech and the Public Square – to provide a forum for members of the U-M community to present informed\, fact-based perspectives\, and to listen to and learn from each other. In his essay\, “Education as a Space to Change Your Mind\,” philosopher Troy Jollimore reminds us of Socrates’ commitment to open-mindedness: “It requires that we work toward developing a sense of the world as a vast and complex place that we can\, and ought to\, continue to learn about for the rest of our lives.”\n\nOffered in this spirit of intellectual humility\, to support the principles of academic freedom\, and to develop a campus climate comfortable with hearing different well-informed points of view\, even those counter to one’s own views\, the lunchtime series will take place on the Diag throughout the Fall. U-M Students\, staff\, and faculty can sign up in advance to request an opportunity to speak on select topics for 3-5 minutes. Or they can simply come to listen and learn. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How to Speak Your Mind / How to Change Your Mind: The University Edition
DESCRIPTION:This speaker series is designed to encourage the campus community to think – and talk with one another – about what it means to develop an informed opinion and stand your ground when challenged\; and about changing your mind in light of new evidence\, different perspectives\, and serious reflection. In our Fall 2026 installment we take up the topic of the university itself at a time when its value and values have come under attack amidst calls for reform.\n\nIn University: A Reckoning\, Lee C. Bollinger\, president emeritus of the University of Michigan and Columbia University\, offers a bold defense of institutions of higher education as an essential source of truth-seeking in diverse democratic societies. \"The university must be defended\,\" he argues\, \"if the American experiment is to continue.\" Drawing from his new book and from decades as an academic leader Bollinger will explore the challenges facing higher education today and what universities can and should do to insure the conditions necessary for open inquiry and meaningful intellectual exchange. \n\nJoin us for a keynote\, followed by a moderated conversation and audience Q&A\, with a reception afterward offering an opportunity to continue the discussion with fellow members of the university community. Demetri Morgan\, associate professor in the Marsal Family School and Faculty Director for the Life Changing Education Theme Year will serve as moderator\; the event will be introduced by Martha Pollack\, former president of Cornell and former provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the U-M.\n\nThe first 100 in-person registrants will be placed in a lottery for a complimentary copy of the book\, University: A Reckoning.
