SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cake and Ice Cream: Creating a Sense of Belonging at U-M Student Banquets in the Early 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:Dorm dinners and late night snacks with friends and roommates have been a major part of the college experience for generations of students. At U-M this has been true since its founding\, and in the early 1900s the most memorable meals were formal banquets hosted by student organizations. Join us and Professor Lisa Young to learn about these banquets and how they created a sense of belonging for Michigan’s community that lasted long after graduation.\n\nLisa Young is the Volney H. Jones Collegiate Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Long interested in the history of food systems in human society\, she has worked on archaeological digs in the southwestern United States and researched extensively on the history of food at U-M. She attended Michigan as an undergraduate and received her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona.\n\nRefreshments will be provided\, and anyone is welcome to attend this free talk. Registration is recommended for in-person attendance\, and we're glad to welcome anyone who wishes to attend virtually.\n\nThe Making Michigan series is co-sponsored by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.

Mooncakes will be available to all in-person registrants\, courtesy of the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies.\n\nTalk 1 - Much About Moons! (Logan Pearce\, ELT Postdoctoral Fellow\, Department of Astronomy)\n\nSail through a tour of the neatest moons in the solar system\, highlighting the specialness of Earth’s Moon. Visit fascinating moons like Io\, Titan\, Europa\, Enceladus\, and even Pluto. We will then explore detections of moons around other planets outside our solar system.\n\nTalk 2 - Wild Thoughts on Our Moon: Listening to the Universe from the Dark Side (Bingcheng Jin\, Graduate Student\, Department of Astronomy)\n\nWe will journey through history to explore humanity’s ancient fascination with the Moon and consider one of the wildest ideas in science history: building observatories on the Moon. Proposed lunar-based observatories would be shielded from Earth’s radio chatter\, allowing us to hear the first whispers of the cosmos. SUMMARY:Presentation:Under Harriet's Sky
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, in collaboration with the Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory at the University of Michigan\, is pleased to present a special evening honoring the visit of Dr. Edda Fields-Black\, acclaimed historian and winner of the Pulitzer Prize in History for her book COMBEE: Harriet Tubman\, the Combahee River Raid\, and Black Freedom during the Civil War. \n\nDr. Fields-Black is also the executive producer and librettist of “Unburied\, Unmourned\, Unmarked: Requiem for Rice\,” a contemporary classical and multimedia symphonic work and the first symphonic work about slavery on rice plantations.  \n\nThis evening aims to combine the two projects by offering attendees the opportunity to view the night sky Harriet Tubman observed in her lifetime while listening to a portion of the symphony. Austin Edmister\, the Observatory’s Assistant Director of Astronomy\, will offer presentations about the night sky and celestial phenomena that Harriet would have experienced\, while Benedicte Boisseron\, Chair of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, will provide the context of Harriet’s world from an ecological perspective.\n\nTours of the observatory will run on intervals throughout the evening. The Observatory’s exhibit\, “Fill the Ranks”: The Civil War and the University of Michigan\, will be available for viewing\, and telescope observing will be possible after sunset (weather permitting). \n\n\nOn October 1st at 4 p.m. in the Vandenberg Room of the Michigan League\, Dr. Fields-Black will present the DAAS Zora Neale Hurston Lecture for the Humanities\, participate in a booksigning/reception\, and attend a faculty dinner.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Michigan and the American Civil War: A Conversation with Historian Jack Dempsey
DESCRIPTION:The American Civil War was a bloody four-year conflict that not only ended slavery in the United States\, but fundamentally changed the country in innumerable ways that still echo today. The young state of Michigan played a key role in the union’s victory both on and off the battlefield. Join us for a conversation with historian Jack Dempsey about Michiganders’ Civil War experiences and how its legacy shaped Michigan history.\n\nJack Dempsey is an avid historian who has long been interested in the Civil War and its role in Michigan’s history and cultural heritage. An award-winning author he has written eleven books\, numerous articles\, and given innumerable talks to academic and general audiences\, as well as serving as President of the Michigan Historical Commission. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Michigan State University and a law degree from George Washington University.\n\nThis talk is in conjunction with the exhibition “Fill the Ranks”: the University of Michigan and the Civil War\, on display September 24\, 2026-July 2\, 2027.\n\nRefreshments will be provided\, and anyone is welcome to attend this free talk.
