Drawing from her experiences as a physician\, patient\, writer\, and national leader in compassionate care\, Dr. Awdish invites us into a profound conversation about reverence\, vulnerability\, and the human dimensions of caregiving.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nDr. Rana Awdish is the bestselling author of In Shock\, a landmark medical memoir\, and serves as the Medical Director of Care Experience at Henry Ford Health. She is a Clinical Professor at both Michigan State University and Wayne State University and has been nationally recognized for her work in healthcare transformation\, including receiving the Schwartz Center’s National Compassionate Caregiver of the Year Award and Physician of the Year by Press Ganey.  Her writing has appeared in The New England Journal of Medicine\, Harvard Business Review\, The Washington Post\, and more. Her latest book\, After Shock\, was published by Macmillan in June 2026.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Picturing Aura: A History of Technical Images at the Crossroads of Science\, Art\, and Occultism
DESCRIPTION:Picturing Aura (MIT Press 2025) is a historical\, anthropological\, and philosophical study of modern efforts to visualize that hidden\, radiant force that envelops the living body and is known as the aura. This book traces the rise and global spread of modern instruments and techniques for visualizing auras\, from the late nineteenth century to the present day\, exploring how pictures of aura have been put to work in diverse domains of psychical and parapsychological research\, esotericism and occultism\, art photography\, and popular culture\, as well as the New Age market for alternative medicine and spiritual well-being. These histories—sometimes complementary\, sometimes conflicting—shaped by exchanges between professionals and amateurs\, scientists and occultists\, countercultural artists and entrepreneurs\, metropolitan figures and peripheral actors\, show how the aura functions as a boundary object: an ontologically plural entity amenable to the varied tasks of creating art\, healing bodies\, and mapping a hidden cosmos. My presentation will introduce some of the book’s key figures\, technologies\, and notable migrations of images\, while reflecting on the very endeavour of making the aura visible and the challenges it poses to established assumptions about science\, religion\, and art.\n\nJeremy Stolow is Professor of Communication Studies at Concordia University in Montréal\, Canada. He works in the interdisciplinary field of “religion and media\,” where he conducts research on the religious\, esoteric\, and occult dimensions of technology\, as well as the technological and material dimensions of religion. In addition to Picturing Aura\, his publications include Orthodox by Design (California UP\, 2010)\, a study of contemporary Orthodox Jewish print culture and its political implications\; Deus in Machina (Fordham UP\, 2013)\, an edited volume exploring the relationship between religion and technology from a historical and transcultural perspective\; as well as several co-edited journal issues focusing on the genealogy of animation\, religious visibility and invisibility\, and “light” as a medium of religious practice and imagination.

Nathan Houchens\, MD\, a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan\, thinks so. As the Executive Director of the Sacred Moments Initiative\, he leads a multidisciplinary group devoted to studying\, cataloging\, educating about\, sharing and spreading the message of sacred moments in the clinical world. As part of that work\, he hosts “Boundless Moments\,” a storytelling podcast in which sacred moments come to life through the voices of those who lived them. He also serves as the Acting Chief of Medicine at the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System and the Director of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Learning Program for the Internal Medicine Residency. \n\nDr. Houchens has a wealth of experience in facilitating communication skills training at the local\, regional and national levels. His research and interests revolve around interpersonal relationships\, connection and communication in healthcare settings. He emphasizes the role communication plays in patient and provider satisfaction\, education\, professionalism and humanism. He has found that sacred moments in healthcare tie many of these together. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications\, one book (\"Teaching Inpatient Medicine: Connecting\, Coaching\, and Communicating in the Hospital\, 2nd Edition\") and three book chapters.

Pilgrims at the Bedside examines the sacred roots of modern medicine and how hospitality\, ritual\, and meaning can enrich the experience of both patients and caregivers.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nMargaret Wardlaw is a pediatrician and sleep medicine physician\, educator\, and a prize-winning essayist. She received her MD and PhD in the Medical Humanities from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Her research interests include religion\, spirituality\, childbirth\, disability studies\, medicine as religious practice\, sleep medicine\, and pediatric palliative medicine. In addition to presenting nationally and internationally\, her writing has appeared in Guernica\, Plough\, Feminist Approaches to Bioethics\, Religion and Medicine\, The Persisting Osler\, and The American Journal of Bioethics. Her essay\, \"Monsters\,\" which received a Pushcart Prize\, is the winner of the grand prize in the National Science Foundation's \"Dangerous Creations\" project for the bicentennial of Frankenstein.
