DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \n\nThe works in this year’s exhibition engage a wide range of questions and concerns. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

Almost all material sold in Michigan Stadium is recyclable or compostable and the success of the Zero Waste Stadium program relies on the proper placement of those items into the corresponding bin. \n\nFor the 2026 season\, the Zero Waste Stadium program is seeking volunteers to staff waste bins to help minimize contamination and educate fans. Volunteers must arrive 2 hours before kick-off. As compensation for your time\, participants will each be provided a meal voucher to use at the game. Please register if interested!

At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyte’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice. At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyte’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Using Visa debit and credit card transactions in the U.S. from 2017 to 2021\, we document the importance of customers in accounting for sales variation across merchants\, across stores within retail chains\, and over time for individual merchants and stores. The number of unique customers\, as opposed to transactions per customer or dollar sales per transaction\, consistently accounts for about 80% of sales variation. The top growing and shrinking merchants account for the majority of total sales reallocation over time\, through their acquisition and loss of customers. To illustrate potential implications\, we write down an endogenous growth model with a customer margin. In this model\, the customer margin drastically increases the size of the largest retailers and their contribution to overall growth\, boosting aggregate innovation and growth in the process.

DESCRIPTION:Talk Description: Climate change is not coming. It is here. We have seen it starkly in northern Michigan over the last three years.\n\nIn late March 2025\, a 60-hour freezing rain event coated far northern Michigan in up to an inch of ice\, collapsing the power grid\, cutting running water and communication to rural communities\, and leaving thousands without heat as temperatures then plunged. Ice up to an inch thick built on the Mackinac Bridge\, the most significant icing in its history\, forcing closures as slabs the size of garage doors fell from the cables. In June 2026\, four to seven inches of rain fell within hours across the Lower Peninsula\, triggering a state of emergency in three counties. Weeks later\, wildfire smoke drove July trip cancellations\, contributing to more than $6.6 billion in economic damages statewide\, the highest of any state.\nThis panel focuses on the changing winter behind events like these. Northern Michigan is not simply losing snow. It is losing winter as a season we can count on. Warmer air\, declining lake ice\, shorter snow cover\, and more frequent freeze-thaw cycles are restructuring winter into something more episodic. A December snowstorm\, a January thaw\, rain\, ice\, then another Arctic outbreak.\n\nThe consequences extend across the systems the region relies on. Thinning snowpack can expose soils and roots to freezing\, shift wildlife distributions\, and reduce plant productivity at large spatial scales. Winter recreation\, forestry\, and tourism all depend on cold and snow persisting long enough to plan around. For people\, longer tick activity windows can increase Lyme disease risk\, while the loss of reliable winter changes the traditions that connect families and communities to this place.\n\nOur panelists will explore these ecological\, economic\, and human dimensions together\, because the future of Michigan winters is not one story. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium - First Proof: Mathematics putting AI to the test
DESCRIPTION:Lauren K. Williams received an AB from Harvard University and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She was a faculty member at the University of California\, Berkeley\, from 2009 to 2018\, prior to returning to Harvard University\, where she is currently the Dwight Parker Robinson Professor of Mathematics. Williams has received various honors\, including a MacArthur fellowship\, a Guggenheim fellowship\, and an NSF Career Grant. While her main research area is algebraic combinatorics (including total positivity and cluster algebras)\, her work is connected to shallow water waves (via soliton solutions of the KP equation)\, traffic flow and protein synthesis (the asymmetric simple exclusion process)\, and scattering amplitudes in high-energy physics. She is one of the editors of First Proof\, which has been benchmarking the ability of AI models to create mathematical proofs.\n\nFirst Proof provides objective\, up-to-date assessments of AI models’ ability to prove specified mathematical statements. This talk will review findings from the project’s first two problem batches and outline plans for its next phase.

At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review and receive direct feedback from a panel of Stamps faculty members. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyte’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by Kennan Conversations.\n\nThis lecture will propose three separate dates as possible points of origin for the war in Ukraine: 1654\, 1991 and 2021. Professor Kimmage will outline the implications embedded in chronology\, which is fundamental to explaining the origins of this war. He will also take a close look at the difficulty of conducting chronological analysis in the absence of solid empirical evidence — a challenge for those attempting to understand decision-making in Putin's Russia\, whether it be academic researchers or the intelligence community and policymakers.  \n\nMichael Kimmage is the director of the Kennan Institute. From 2014 to 2016\, he served on the Secretary's Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State\, where he held the Russia/Ukraine portfolio. DESCRIPTION:Adderley Positive Research Incubator\nHosted by: Center for Positive Organizations\n\n\"Celebrants and Confidants: How Wedding Officiants Resolve the Intimate Labor Paradox\"\nFeatured Scholar: Justine Murray\, Harvard University\n\nDescription: As community ties weaken\, people increasingly pay strangers for care once provided by intimates. This expanding intimate labor economy poses a paradox: the support it delivers ordinarily grows from a shared history\, accumulated knowledge\, and trust\, yet providers are hired precisely where that relationship is thin or absent. How is intimate labor accomplished without intimacy? Through an inductive study\, we learn that wedding officiants—professional strangers hired to make a couple’s ceremony feel singular—resolve this paradox through disclosure work: the deliberate and asymmetric management of a couple’s personal information. Disclosure work pulls apart what intimate relationships ordinarily fuse—a bond with the recipient and the knowledge it yields—and lets officiants build the occasion from either one. Celebrants treat personal information as an input\, crafting the occasion from solicited knowledge while forgoing a relational bond\; confidants treat acquiring information as the work of relating\, building an accelerated\, bounded bond from which the occasion flows. We advance research on intimate labor by showing that its service moments can be produced without the relationship that ordinarily underwrites them\, and on disclosure at work by showing that personal knowledge can be decoupled from the relational bonds through which it ordinarily travels.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Robots\, Galaxies\, and Dark Energy: The DESI Story (So Far)
DESCRIPTION:The standard cosmological model\, Lambda-CDM\, provides a remarkably successful description of the universe\, yet the physical nature of dark energy remains unknown. Is it a cosmological constant\, or does it evolve with cosmic time? The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) was built to address this question by obtaining spectra of millions of galaxies and quasars and constructing an unprecedented three-dimensional map of the universe. In this colloquium\, I will tell the story of how DESI became one of the world’s most productive instruments for cosmology. At its heart are 5\,000 robotic fiber positioners\, built at the University of Michigan\, that allow DESI to observe thousands of objects simultaneously. I will tell the story of how an ambitious idea became a working instrument - from construction at Michigan through integration and installation to survey operations at Kitt Peak. Along the way\, DESI faced a global pandemic\, a wildfire that threatened the observatory\, and other unexpected challenges of operating a complex instrument on a mountaintop. Despite these obstacles\, it reached its survey goals ahead of schedule and within budget. I will discuss what made that success possible\, place DESI’s emerging cosmological results in context\, and conclude with the scientific opportunities ahead.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: A Riemann-Hilbert approach to Dyson Brownian motion and Gaussian multiplicative chaos
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The connection between random matrices and Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) has been studied intensively since the work of Fyodorov and Keating (2014). There has been recent interest in the appearance of GMC in dynamical ensembles of random matrices and their eigenvalues\, such as the Dyson Brownian motion (Keles 2025). We propose a Riemann-Hilbert approach to this problem. I will explain how our approach allows one to probe the “microscopic scale” (a scale which is inaccessible via loop equations)\, where the appearance of Painlevé transcendents is anticipated. This is joint work with Ahmad Barhoumi.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Stability\, Approximation\, and Robustness of Optimal Policies in POMDPs
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will focus on the stability\, approximation\, and robustness of optimal policies in partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) under discounted and average cost criteria.\n\nI will begin with filter kernel perturbation under model change. I will establish how small perturbations in the transition or observation kernels lead to explicit\, nonasymptotic bounds on both the filter kernel and the performance of the induced policies. A primary result demonstrates that an optimal policy computed under an incorrect model remains near optimal for the true model\, with quantitatively bounded errors.\n\nBuilding on these stability concepts\, I will then talk about the average cost setting and describe conditions under which the nonlinear filter exhibits a contraction property. Under these conditions\, the vanishing discounted approach yields a solution to the average cost optimality equation\, guaranteeing the existence of a stationary optimal policy. Furthermore\, this provides explicit bounds that quantify the influence of initial prior distribution errors and model errors on long run performance.\n\nFinally\, I will present results on implementable approximations. I will introduce refined error bounds for finite window controllers and conclude by discussing how Q learning can be utilized through either finite window or the quantization of the belief process to obtain near optimal policies for both discounted and average cost criteria.

DESCRIPTION:This interactive\, interdisciplinary workshop blends creative writing and creative movement\, offering participants of all levels a space to explore personal and environmental narratives and shared experience. No previous writing or dance experience is required. Working both solo and collaboratively\, participants will co-create and translate short dance and written pieces\, discovering how movement and language can shape and inform one another. The workshop culminates in a brief sharing and reflection session\, where participants present their creations and discuss their process. These reflective moments celebrate our individual and collective relationships with the Arboretum\, and the community built in our short time together.\n\nAbout the Teaching Artist: Kara Roseborough is a multi-disciplinary artist specializing in dance\, creative writing\, and theatre. She holds an MFA in Dance and a Certificate in World Performance Studies from the University of Michigan\, a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Utah\, and teaching certifications in Grades I-V of the Cecchetti Ballet method.
