SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Before You Post That Global Health Photo
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, people return from global health experiences like research trips\, clinical experiences\, and service work abroad\, with hundreds of photos on their phones. But how much thought are we giving to the ethics behind the images we take and share? Who is being represented? Who gets to tell the story? And how can photography unintentionally reinforce harmful stereotypes\, power imbalances\, or “othering\,” even when our intentions are good?\n\nJoin the Global REACH Student Advisory Board for a workshop with Dr. Sonya de Laat\, a scholar\, photographer\, and educator at McMaster University’s Mary Heersink School of Global Health and Social Medicine\, whose work explores the intersections of photography\, ethics\, humanitarianism\, and global health. Holding both an MA in Anthropology and a PhD in Media Studies\, her research examines how images shape public perceptions of suffering\, humanitarian action\, and social responsibility\, with a particular focus on the ethical implications of representation and storytelling in humanitarian settings. She also serves as Research Coordinator for the Humanitarian Health Ethics Research Group at McMaster University\, where she contributes to interdisciplinary research on ethics in humanitarian and global health practices. \n\nThis session is intended for students\, residents\, clinicians\, researchers\, and anyone involved in global health\, international education\, advocacy\, and/or visual storytelling! Whether you have taken photos during a global health experience\, shared images or videos online\, or simply questioned what ethical storytelling should look like in practice\, this workshop will encourage participants to think more critically about the responsibilities that come with documenting the lives of others.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Psychedelics and Arousal States
DESCRIPTION:This talk is part of the Michigan Psychedelic Center's 2026 Seminar Series: Psychedelics — From Cells to Society. Learn more about the series at https://michiganpsychedelic.med.umich.edu/education-events/. \n\nABOUT THE TALK\nSerotonergic psychedelics (e.g.\, psilocybin\, DMT\, LSD)\, primarily known for their mind-altering properties\, have garnered widespread attention for their potential to treat an array of physical and mental health conditions. However\, they are also known to increase wakefulness in animal models and produce a neurophysiological profile opposite to that seen during general anesthesia. This is clinically relevant given there is a lack of a pharmacological agent to reverse general anesthesia. \n\nTherefore\, we tested whether the serotonergic psychedelic 2\,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI) could induce behavioral arousal and restore brain dynamics associated with wakefulness during general anesthesia. \n\nWe provide the first evidence that DOI can reverse general anesthesia and restore wake-like brain dynamics during propofol or isoflurane anesthesia\, and this reversal is mediated by 5-HT2A receptor activation. Importantly\, this effect was not blocked by inactivation of cortical sites known to be rich in 5-HT2A receptors\, prompting a re-evaluation of the role of the cortex in states of consciousness.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nEmma Huels\, PhD\, is a postdoctoral research fellow in the University of Michigan Medical School Department of Anesthesiology with affiliations in the Center for Consciousness Science and Michigan Psychedelic Center.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Bookworm #93 - Author Conversation with Barbara Franco\, \"Gettysburg Surgeons: Facing a Common Enemy in the Civil War's Deadliest Battle\"
DESCRIPTION:Angela Oonk hosts this webinar series discussing history topics with guests. This month\, historian and author of \"Gettysburg Surgeons: Facing a Common Enemy in the Civil War's Deadliest Battle\" Barbara Franco takes us to Gettysburg\, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. A thousand surgeons faced an unprecedented medical catastrophe: 25\,000 wounded soldiers needing immediate care with only primitive tools and their own determination to save lives.\n\nAt Gettysburg's makeshift hospitals—set up in barns\, churches\, and blood-soaked fields—military and civilian surgeons from both North and South worked around the clock performing life-saving operations under fire. Drawing from a decade of meticulous research\, Franco reveals how these courageous medical professionals revolutionized battlefield medicine and established principles still saving lives today.
