DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join the Tuba & Euphonium Studio for a recital by guest artist Chance Huiet. He will be joined by collaborative pianist Zhihua Tang\, an associate professor in collaborative piano at the Michigan State University College of Music.\n\nGUEST BIO\n\nCHANCE HUIET is currently the Assistant Professor of Euphonium and Tuba at Michigan State University. Prior to his appointment\, Chance was the replacement Principal Tuba with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra for several seasons. He also held the Principal Tuba position with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic from 2016-2024. Chance has performed with the orchestras of Cleveland\, Melbourne (Australia)\, Utah\, Detroit\, Kansas City\, Iceland\, and Malaysia\, and Kalamazoo\, Michigan based New Orleans-style group\, the Kanola Band.\n\nAs a soloist\, Chance has performed recitals around the country including a guest artist recital at the 2018 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference held at the University of Iowa. Chance performed the John Williams Tuba Concerto on a subscription series with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic in February 2022\, his first solo appearance with the orchestra. In March 2019\, he had the privilege of premiering Viet Cuong’s Concerto for Tuba and Wind Ensemble with the Purdue Fort Wayne Wind Ensemble.\n\nIn the last few years\, Chance has been interested in learning about birds and loves exploring the native birds in places he gets to travel. Most recently\, he saw the critically-endangered Helmeted Honeyeater in Healesville\, Australia. In the 1980s\, its population had dropped to fewer than 60 breeding pairs in the wild\, but is slowly growing due to diligent work at sanctuaries like in Healesville. Though not explicitly bird related\, he recorded and self-produced an album of original folk songs released in January 2021 called\, “For the Birds.” The album is on Spotify and all listening sources.\n\nHis primary teachers\, who deserve much gratitude\, include Orcenith Smith\, Jacob Cameron\, and Philip Sinder.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nathan R. Platte\, \"Glad Company: A Songful History of Mary Poppins’s Bert\"
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Musicology hosts a talk by guest scholar Nathan R. Platte\, Professor of Musicology\, University of Iowa. Free and open to the public.\n\nIn Pamela Travers’s *Mary Poppins* novels\, Bert is a minor character. In Disney’s 1964 film musical\, he is a major one: a friend\, mentor\, father figure\, and jack-of-all trades who sings half of the film’s songs. This presentation accounts for the difference between books and film by showing how Bert’s character became a recurring solution to problems arising in the film’s development. Increasingly\, Bert’s songs came to hold the more slippery threads of Travers’s novels\, including matters of social standing\, affection\, and spiritual wonder. Drawing together story treatments\, conference notes\, scripts\, and song drafts\, this talk frames Bert as a reconciling presence\, whose onscreen assistance of others echoes his role in assuaging disagreement between novelist Travers and the film’s songwriters\, Richard and Robert Sherman.\n\nRefreshments to follow.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Yun Emily Wang\, \"Listening for Otherwise Aliveness\"
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Musicology hosts a talk by guest scholar Yun Emily Wang (Duke University)\; free and open to the public.\n\nWang describes her lecture:\n\n\"This talk is an ethnography of listening in what I will call the Chinese Canadian Care Home for the Aged\, a residential proto-medical institution in one of Toronto’s “ethnoburbs.” Established by and serving Chinese immigrants\, the Care Home relies on liberal celebrations of “culturally appropriate care” to promise successful aging\, and maintains funding by performing a Chineseness legible to the “cunning” of Canadian Multiculturalism (Povinelli 2002). Music shoulders the burden of “culture” across hundreds of residents\, staff\, and volunteers from across the diaspora: Karaoke Wednesdays and Opera Fridays punctuate the daily repetition of Cantopop broadcast\, between live performances of recognizably traditional Chinese genres. In the Care Home\, culturally appropriate *music* comes to signal life\, against the hums and beeps of breathing machines foretelling death. \n\nDrawing on fieldwork from 2014-2015\, I juxtapose a diversity of ways in which members of the Care Home community have aurally engaged with (or refused) what amounts to a biopolitical regime of sound-as-life. I trace how an alternative conception of life – one that far exceeds heart beats and is grounded\, always\, in vitality and enjoyment – emerged in the social cultivation and circulation of these praxis of otherwise listening. In so doing\, I hope to offer not answers but an open question about how the ear mediates possibilities for otherwise aliveness.\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Carrigan Lecture in Music Theory: Professor Olivia Lucas
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music Theory hosts a presentation by guest scholar Olivia R. Lucas as part of the Carrigan Lecture Series in Music Theory. Free and open to the public. \n\nABSTRACT\n\nWhat does it mean to love a song that expresses the brutality of intimate partner violence? And further\, what does it mean to analyze such a song—to discover its deep structure? \n\nIn this paper\, I examine the experience of listening to and analyzing the music of the experimental musician Lingua Ignota. Taking her project name from Hildegard von Bingen’s mystical constructed language\, her music explores the intersections of Christianity\, trauma\, and intimate partner abuse. Sonically\, her music traverses deconstructed elements of metal and noise music\, vocal techniques that range from extended screams to classical mezzo-soprano\, and extensively researched references to Catholic\, Pentecostal\, Mennonite\, and Western art musical traditions. The resulting complexly layered musical texts deploy the subjectivity of Christian faith as a metaphor for intimate partner abuse. I trace how the timbral\, textual\, and vocal-expressive layers of Lingua Ignota’s music shape deeply uncomfortable sonic experiences in which a victim’s struggle to make her abuser love her is given the apocalyptic scale of a sinner struggling to avoid eternal hellfire. Building on recent work in critical music theory\, I use these uncomfortable emotional experiences to explore moments when analytical writing seems to fail.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nOLIVIA R. LUCAS is an Associate Professor of Music Theory at Louisiana State University. Her work on metal music has been published in *Music Theory Online*\, *Popular Music*\, *The Journal of Sonic Studies*\, and several edited volumes. Her article “Performing Analysis\, Performing Metal” won the 2023 SMT Emerging Scholar (Article) award. She also co-edited the volume *Teaching Difficult Topics: Reflections from the Undergraduate Music Classroom* (University of Michigan Press\, 2024). In her free time she enjoys dancing with her Mardi Gras Krewe\, the Ogden Park Coven.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Suzannah Clark Lecture: Distinguished Resident in Music Theory
DESCRIPTION:Schubert began composing the “Great” Symphony in C Major (D. 944) during the summer of 1825 and is presumed to have finished it in early 1826. Based on letters by Schubert’s friends\, performances were lined up during that season\, but they fell through. Schubert then gifted the autograph to the Viennese *Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde* in October 1826. The following summer\, the Society produced orchestral parts\, which are still held in the *Gesellschaft* archives. While no public performance occurred during Schubert’s lifetime\, posthumous annotations in these orchestral parts hold clues to how nineteenth-century musicians performed the work. Based on new archival research\, this paper focuses on these nineteenth-century performance choices and illustrates what they reveal about nineteenth-century attitudes towards Schubert’s symphonic structures. The paper will also examine conductor scores belonging to Gustav Mahler and Leonard Bernstein\, which are held in the archives of the New York Philharmonic\, in order to reveal how certain modern-day performance choices came about. A comparison with tell-tale markings in Schubert’s own autograph will be used to propose what Schubert himself may have had in mind.\n\nGUEST BIO\n\nSUZANNAH CLARK is the Morton B. Knafel Professor of Music and the Director of the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard University. She has written on the music of Franz Schubert\, the history of tonal music theory\, and medieval vernacular music\, particularly on the songs of the trouvères and the thirteenth-century motet. She has published on theorists ranging from Gottfried Weber\, Arthur von Oettingen\, Hugo Riemann to Heinrich Schenker. Her book *Analyzing Schubert* was published in 2011. Material for her talk at UMich is taken from her forthcoming book *Franz Schubert: The “Great” Symphony in C Major (D. 944)*\, which is commissioned by Cambridge University Press as part of the New Cambridge Music Handbooks series. She is also currently writing a book *Music Theory: A Very Short Introduction* for the Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Master Class with Noa Kageyama: Shrinking the Gap Between Practice and Performance
DESCRIPTION:Elite athletes and coaches have known for decades that physical preparation alone is not enough to perform optimally under pressure. And increasingly\, musicians too are engaging in mental skills training and ways of practicing and preparing which can lead to more consistent\, inspired\, and engaged performances.\n\nIn this session\, you’ll find out what common practice habit leads to “but it sounded better at home” syndrome (and the more effective alternative)\, discover the two causes of “choking” under pressure (and a simple strategy to prevent this from happening)\, and learn a “backwards” method for structuring your daily practice that leads to more consistent and confident performances.\n\nStudents should bring their instruments in order to apply practices and try out strategies in real time during the session. Any playing will be altogether as a group. No individual or 1:1 playing is required!\n\nFree and open to the public. Presented by the Department of Strings and the U-M Arts Initiative.\n\nGUEST ARTIST BIO\n\nPerformance psychologist NOA KAGEYAMA is on the faculty of The Juilliard School and the Cleveland Institute of Music. A conservatory-trained violinist with degrees from Oberlin and Juilliard before completing a Ph.D. in psychology at Indiana University\, Noa specializes in teaching musicians how to utilize sport psychology principles and more consistently perform up to their full abilities under pressure.\n\nHe has conducted workshops for institutions including Curtis\, Eastman\, Peabody\, and the U.S. Armed Forces School of Music\, programs such as the Starling-Delay Symposium and the Perlman Music Program\, and for organizations like the Music Teachers’ National Association\, Performing Arts Medicine Association\, and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.\n\nNoa's work has appeared in CNN\, NBC News\, The Wall Street Journal\, and other media outlets. He authors *The Bulletproof Musician* blog and podcast\, reaching over 45\,000 subscribers every week.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Emily Wilbourne\, \"Impersonation and the Voice”
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Musicology hosts a talk by guest scholar Emily Wilbourne (CUNY Queen’s college and Graduate Center)\; free and open to the public.\n\nWilbourne describes her presentation:\n\n\"In Western culture\, the voice plays an overdetermined role in the literal and metaphorical representation of personhood. We find our voice\, raise our voice\, recognize each other by the sounds of our voices\, and – through the democratic process – we hear the voice of the people. In this paper\, I am interested in voices that are misrecognized or misheard: voices that through illness\, medical treatment\, or training\, confound expectations in ways that foreground the sonic materiality of the voice and its relationship to cultural expectations.\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Why did you live? Is it all a terrible joke?”: A Mahler Talk by Joseph Horowitz
DESCRIPTION:Join the University Symphony Orchestra for a program with guest artist and author Joseph Horowitz\, generously sponsored by the Sally Fleming Master Class Fund. Free and open to the public.\n\nGustav Mahler once said: “Why did you live? Why did you suffer? Is it all a terrible joke? We have to solve these questions in some way if we are to continue living. Anyone whose life has heard this call must give an answer.”\n\nAmong Mahler’s nine symphonies\, the Sixth – known as “The Tragic” – furnishes the darkest record of his inner life. After conducting the dress rehearsal for the premiere\, in 1904\, he paced up and down\, sobbing\, wringing his hands\, unable to control himself. At the concert itself\, he was so afraid of the demons he had unleashed that he conducted badly. He subsequently conducted his Sixth Symphony only two times. According to his wife Alma: “No other work flowed so directly from his heart. We both cried at the time\; we felt so deeply what this music meant\, what it forebodingly told us.” Mahler himself felt he possessed a power to intuit the future. \n\nWhat happens in Mahler’s Sixth? What is the “dark omen” of the finale\, with its three hammer blows of fate? And why should it matter to us – more than ever – today?\n\nMahler also said: “Tradition is not the worship of ashes\, but the preservation of fire.” His disciples revered him\; one – the conductor Oskar Fried – called him “pure in a superhuman way”\n\nJoseph Horowitz’s Mahler talk – with copious audio and video clips – will explore Mahler’s Sixth Symphony in the context of Mahler’s life and times. Then he’ll be joined by conductor Kenneth Kiesler to ask: What can we learn today from Mahler the conductor? \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nJOSEPH HOROWITZ is an award-winning author\, concert producer\, film-maker\, and broadcaster. He is one of the most prominent and widely published writers on topics in American music. As an orchestral administrator and advisor\, he has been a pioneering force in the development of thematic programming and new concert formats. Horowitz’s most recent books include a novel\, *The Marriage: The Mahlers in New York*\, about which Clive Paget wrote in *Musical America*: “With his unparalleled knowledge of fin-de-siècle classical music in America\, Joseph Horowitz [has] brought us closer to Mahler and his wife Alma than any other author I have read. . . . At times\, your heart breaks for them both. . . . In Gustav and Alma Mahler\, Horowitz has created two of classical music’s most convincing fictional portraits.” Another Horowitz book\, *Dvorak’s Prophecy and the Vexed Fate of Black Classical Music*\, tells a story that “must be heard if classical music is to contribute to the national discussion on racial justice” (according to Mark Clague of the University of Michigan). A former *New York Times* music critic\, and Executive Director of the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra\, Horowitz works as an artistic consultant for orchestras throughout the US\, and also regularly produces 50-minute “More than Music” documentaries for National Public Radio.
