SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899 - Jingwen Hu\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Hu is a Professor at IOE and a Research Professor at UMTRI. His research interests primarily focus on injury biomechanics and traffic injury prevention by a multidisciplinary approach using a combination of experimental\, numerical\, and epidemiological methods. Dr. Hu is an author of 150+ peer-reviewed journal and conference papers with four Best Paper Awards. His research has been funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration\, the National Science Foundation\, the National Institute of Justice\, the Department of Defense\, and the Auto Industry.\n\nAbstract:\nRecent literature has shown that there is a growing concern of safety disparity in motor-vehicle crashes (MVCs)\, but technological tools for addressing this issue are limited. In particular\, females\, the elderly\, and obese occupants are among the vulnerable populations who are often at increased risk of death and serious injury compared with mid-size young men in MVCs. This presentation will introduce the parametric finite element (FE) human and vehicle modeling work conducted in the past decade\, along with recent machine-learning models and design optimizations. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of a population-based virtual testing framework on improving safety disparity among the diverse population.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE postdoc research talk - Amirhossein Moosavi
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract: Healthcare decisions are rarely made with full information: risks evolve\, service durations fluctuate\, and data are often incomplete. Overlooking such uncertainties in the optimization process can compromise safety\, access\, and efficiency. In this seminar\, I will examine key healthcare decision-making problems\, such as ambulatory care appointment scheduling and hospital readmission reduction\, each characterized by different types of uncertainty (observable arrivals\, partially observable health status\, and complex-to-model unpunctuality). I will present cutting-edge solution approaches (e.g.\, approximate dynamic programming\, predict-and-optimize) that translate these uncertainties into actionable decisions. I will also demonstrate their computational efficiency\, performance relative to state-of-the-art benchmarks\, and potential impact in real-world healthcare settings.\n\nPresenter Bio: Amirhossein Moosavi is a Michigan Data Science Fellow at the University of Michigan with a PhD in Management Science and MS/BS in Industrial Engineering. He blends machine learning and advanced analytics to enable robust decisions in healthcare and generate evidence that informs policy. At the University of Michigan\, Amirhossein serves as Postdoctoral Affairs Chair\, and mentors undergraduate and graduate students. Off campus\, he serves as one of five national INFORMS representatives and is co-launching an international forum for doctoral and postdoctoral scholars to share their work and expand their networks. His long-term vision is to fuse novel data-driven methods with efficient healthcare delivery to generate insights that inform policymaking. Outside academia\, he enjoys strength training\, cycling\, and kayaking.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899 - Brad Sturt\, University of Illinois Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Presenter Bio:\n\nBrad Sturt is an assistant professor of Information and Decision Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago. His research uses the methodologies of stochastic programming and robust optimization to develop solutions for operational problems in business and government. Recent applications have included election security\, data-driven assortment planning\, and high-dimensional options pricing. His research has received several recognitions\, including the Roger J-B Wets Junior Researcher Best Paper Prize in Stochastic Programming\, second place in the INFORMS Junior Faculty Interest Group (JFIG) Paper Competition\, and second place in the INFORMS George Nicholson Student Paper Competition. Outside of academia\, he is a co-founder of BallotIQ\, an elections administration startup based in Ann Arbor.\n\nAbstract:\n\nFor more than a century\, election officials across the United States have inspected voting machines before elections using a procedure called Logic and Accuracy Testing (LAT). This procedure consists of officials casting a test deck of ballots into each machine and confirming the machine produces the expected vote totals. In this talk\, I will bring a scientific perspective to LAT by introducing a robust optimization approach to designing test decks with rigorous security guarantees. To facilitate deployment at scale\, we develop a practically efficient custom algorithm for solving our robust optimization problems based on the cutting-plane method. In partnership with the Michigan Bureau of Elections\, we retrospectively applied our approach to the November 2022 election\, which revealed that our test decks would have required only 1.2% more ballots than the current practice. Our approach has since been deployed by Michigan in real-world elections to improve election security and increase public confidence.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899 - Albert S. Berahas\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Presenter Bio:\n\nAlbert S. Berahas is an Assistant Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan (UM). Prior to joining the UM in 2020\, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Industrial and Systems Engineering department at Lehigh University. Berahas received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Northwestern University in 2018. Berahas’ research broadly focuses on designing\, developing\, and analyzing algorithms for solving large-scale nonlinear optimization problems. Specifically\, he is interested in and has explored several sub-fields of nonlinear optimization\, such as: (i) constrained optimization\, (ii) optimization algorithms for machine learning\, (iii) stochastic optimization\, (iv) derivative-free optimization\, and (v) distributed optimization. His research is funded by the Office of Naval Research and a Young Investigator Program grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Berahas served as the vice-chair of the Nonlinear Optimization cluster for the INFORMS Optimization Society (2020-2022) and as the president of the INFORMS Junior Faculty Interest Group (2023-2024). Berahas was awarded the 2022 Charles Broyden Prize\, the 2024 IISE Excellence in Teaching of Operations Research Award\, and the Martin Luther King Jr Spirit Award for Community Building & Impact in 2024.\n\n\nAbstract:\n\nOptimization is everywhere! Specifically\, nonlinear\, noisy\, constrained\, and nonconvex optimization problems arise in a plethora of science and engineering applications\, for example\, machine learning\, robotics\, logistics\, and computational physics. In this talk\, we discuss the use\, analysis\, and implementation of state-of-the-art adaptive optimization paradigms\, such as line search and trust region\, in the presence of noise. We introduce three distinct noise oracles that capture a broad range of practical scenarios and present corresponding convergence results. Numerical experiments are provided to highlight the robustness and efficiency of adaptive algorithms in challenging settings. Finally\, we briefly discuss a complementary project\, carried out in collaboration with the University of Michigan Men’s and Women’s soccer teams.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE 899 - Vijay G. Subramanian
DESCRIPTION:Presenter Bio:\n\nVijay Subramanian is a Professor in the ECE Division of the EECS Department at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\; from Fall 2014 to Summer 2024\, he was an Associate Professor at the same institution. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, Champaign\, IL\, USA\, in 1999. He worked at Motorola Inc.\, the Hamilton Institute\, Maynooth\, Ireland\, and the EECS Department\, Northwestern University\, Evanston\, IL\, USA\; he also held an Adjunct Research Associate Professor in CSL and ECE at UIUC. His current research interests are in stochastic analysis\, random graphs\, multi-agent systems\, and game theory (mechanism and information design) with applications to social\, economic\, and technological networks.\n\nAbstract:\n\nMulti-agent systems appear in many engineering and socioeconomic settings\, wherein a group of agents or controllers interact with each other in a shared and possibly non-stationary environment\, and make sequential decisions based on their own information using a (causal) interaction mechanism. \n\nIn this talk\, we focus attention on cooperative sequential decision making under uncertainty—a decentralized team\, where a fixed finite number of agents act as a team with the common goal of minimizing a long-term cost function. We investigate the general situation where one long-term (objective) cost must be minimized\, while maintaining multiple other long-term (constraint) costs within prescribed limits via a cooperative Multi-Agent Constrained Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (MAC-POMDP) model. Such constrained sequential team decision problems arise in several real-world applications where efficient operation must be balanced with maintaining safe operating margins—such considerations arise in communication networks\, traffic management\, energy-grid optimization\, e-commerce pricing\, environmental monitoring\, etc.\n\nWe focus on the discounted cost criterion\, and start by establishing general results on Lagrangian duality and the existence of a global saddle-point. Next\, we consider decentralized policy-profiles and their mixtures\, and establish that when agents mix jointly over their policy-profiles\, there is no (Lagrangian) duality gap\, and a global saddle point exists under the Slater's condition. However\, when agents mix independently over their policy-profiles\, we show (through a concrete counterexample) that a non-zero duality gap can exist. Then\, we consider coordination policies and their mixtures\, and establish that\, except for pure coordination policies\, they are all equivalent to joint mixtures of decentralized policy-profiles. This equivalence result helps reformulate the original multi-agent constrained optimization problem into a single-agent constrained optimization problem\, which is then used to propose a primal-dual framework for model-based optimal control. Finally\, we extend the notion of a Multi-Agent Approximate Information State (MA-AIS) to constrained decision making\, and formalize MA-AIS based coordination policies and their mixtures. We establish through a concrete counter-example that\, (in contrast to behavioral coordination policies)\, MA-AIS based behavioral coordination policies and their mixtures are not equivalent. We also establish approximate optimality of mixtures of MA-AIS based coordination policies\, and use this result to guide the development of a data-driven alternative for the aforementioned model-based primal-dual framework.\n\nThis is joint work with Nouman Khan\, Amazon Search\, Seattle\, WA\, which was carried out when he was a PhD student at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NERS Colloquium: Radiation Effects on Quantum Dots
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThis presentation discusses the radiation effects on nanostructures (quantum dots) after exposure to ionizing radiation by observing changes in luminescence. The goal of our research is to evaluate quantum dots in solution for radiation hardness\, specifically total ionizing dose (TID). Various compositions of commercially available quantum dots are examined\, and a high activity 137Cs source is used to induce ionization damage in quantum dot samples. Laser-induced photoluminescence spectroscopy\, and Xe bulb-induced fluorescence spectroscopy are used to measure quantum dot luminescence. We observe significant changes to the luminescence of irradiated quantum dots and find that changes are based on quantum dot composition. We performed TID up to 100 kR. We explore Graphene\, Perovskite\, and CdTe quantum dots in our study\, with fluorescence spectroscopy as the most reliable measurement technique. \n\nBio: \nEdward Cazalas\, Ph.D.\, Nuclear Engineering Program at University of Utah. Prof. Cazalas earned his Ph.D. from Penn State in Nuclear Engineering. He since worked at RAND Corporation and the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology. His research is in the areas of radiation detection\, dosimetry\, and radiation effects on electronics and materials. He has been at the University of Utah since 2018 and has served as faculty advisor to its ANS chapter since 2020. \n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers\, industry experts\, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students\, faculty\, and guests. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Active Inference for Human Factors Research: Modeling Cognition\, Trust\, and Decision-Making in Automated Systems
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Anthony D. (Tony) McDonald\, Associate Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and Director of the Human Factors and Machine Learning Lab\, for a seminar introducing active inference theory and its applications in transportation safety and human–automation interaction. Dr. McDonald will discuss how active inference—a computational framework for understanding human cognition and behavior—can model\, predict\, and interpret human decision-making in complex environments. Through four modeling applications\, he will demonstrate how active inference compares to deep reinforcement learning\, connects driving behaviors to underlying cognitive values\, and provides a principled way to estimate constructs such as trust and situation awareness. Together\, these insights illustrate the potential of active inference to bridge human factors and machine learning\, guiding future research and practice in human-centered autonomy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Long-term Planning and Operations for the Electric Power Sector: Methods\, Applications\, and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe electric power sector is experiencing rapid changes and greater uncertainty than in many years. Electricity demand is projected to increase at a faster rate than previous decades due to electrification and data centers. Increasing wind and solar capacities and thermal generator retirements will likely increase short-term forecast errors and require greater system flexibility. Energy storage costs are decreasing rapidly\, and batteries are likely to play a larger role in system operations\, but questions remain about how much storage capacity will be deployed\, what duration they will offer\, and how to effectively manage a fleet of storage\, particularly in regions with wholesale markets. Finally\, increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events that disrupt system operations present reliability challenges because they induce greater spatial and temporal correlations in forced outage rates of system components.\n\nThis talk will overview several research projects on the planning and operations of power systems under uncertainty. The talk will present the problem of long-term generation and transmission planning under uncertainty\, including the range of methods used and recent improvements. The talk will also present the corresponding challenges to electricity markets from the changes in the resource mix\, including several recent research projects on this topic. Finally\, the talk will frame several remaining challenges for practical methods for both planning and for markets/operations under greater uncertainty\, and future research directions that arise from these challenges.\n\nBiography:\nMort Webster is a Professor of Energy Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. His research develops methods for managing uncertainty for electric power systems planning\, operations\, and electricity market design\, with a focus on stochastic optimization methods. Current projects include the development of stochastic optimization methods for solving multi-stage adaptive expansion planning (generation and/or transmission)\, methods for managing large high-dimensional scenario space\, and real-time market designs to manage uncertainty and incentivize flexible resources. Prof. Webster has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in engineering\, operations research\, and economic journals\, and has served on several national and international panels. Prior to joining Penn State\, Prof. Webster was Assistant and Associate Professor of Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2006-2013) and Assistant Professor of public policy in the Department of Public Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2001-2006). He received a Ph.D. (2000) in Engineering Systems and a M.S. (1996) in Technology and Policy from MIT\, and a B.S.E. (1988) in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NERS Colloquium: Reactor Core & System Design Research at UW-Madison
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This talk will give an overview of a few different projects at UW-Madison on reactor technology and integrated energy systems. Firstly\, an irregular design of PWR assembly is introduced\, which allows the number of pins to be increased while maintaining backward compatibility\, hence facilitating core uprates. Secondly\, an overview of our work on integrated energy systems will be presented. In an increasingly volatile electricity market\, there are opportunities for nuclear energy to maximize economic value through flexible dispatch. This can be facilitated by integration of thermal energy storage which can be discharged at periods of high demand. Thermal energy storage also presents opportunities for tight integration of nuclear and solar thermal energy\, providing synergistic benefits and increasing project value. Finally\, integration of low temperature cogeneration\, for example seawater desalination\, can again increase revenue\, and thermal energy storage presents opportunities for maximizing the value of the integrated system.\n \nBio: Dr Ben Lindley is an Assistant Professor in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics at UW-Madison. His current research focusses on the computational modelling\, design & development of fission and fusion energy systems. Ben holds a joint faculty appointment at Argonne National Laboratory and co-founded Realta Fusion\, a UW-Madison spinout aiming to commercialize fusion energy. Ben holds a PhD in Nuclear Engineering and MEng & BA degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cambridge\, UK (2007-2014).\n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers\, industry experts\, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students\, faculty\, and guests. Covering a wide range of topics—from cutting-edge research and emerging technologies to policy\, education\, and professional development—the weekly talks offer an opportunity to explore current issues and innovations shaping the future of the field.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899: Mohammed Safayet Arefin
DESCRIPTION:Head-Mounted Display (HMD) interfaces are designed to present virtual information within users' real-world view\, enhancing their perception of the real world and supporting effective task execution. Effective human performance with an HMD depends strongly on the design of its interface. Three key components are visual depth\, clutter\, and transparency. HMD interface visual depth is the distance between the user’s eyes and the virtual information displayed in the real-world view. HMD interface clutter denotes the amount of virtual information shown. HMD interface transparency aims to balance the legibility of virtual elements and the visibility of the real-world environment seen through the HMD. This talk presents some of our recent findings on these issues\, with an emphasis on human performance and perception.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899: Soroosh Shafiee
DESCRIPTION:We investigate the problem of certifying optimality for sparse generalized linear models (GLMs)\, where sparsity is enforced through a cardinality constraint. While Branch-and-Bound (BnB) frameworks can certify optimality using perspective relaxations\, existing methods for solving these relaxations are computationally intensive\, limiting their scalability. To address this challenge\, we propose a unified proximal first-order algorithmic framework that is both linearly convergent and computationally efficient. We first develop a general theory for composite optimization problems satisfying specific geometric regularity conditions. \n\nBy establishing a rigorous link between primal quadratic growth and dual quadratic decay\, we derive novel error bounds showing that the computable duality gap can serve as a tight proxy for the distance to the solution set. Leveraging this property\, we design a restart scheme that upgrades generic sublinear algorithms to achieve provable linear convergence for both primal and dual objectives. We then instantiate this framework for the perspective relaxation of sparse GLMs. \n\nWe prove that standard GLM loss functions and the implicit perspective regularizer satisfy the required geometric conditions. Furthermore\, we develop specialized algorithms to evaluate the non-smooth regularizer and its proximal operator exactly in log-linear time\, avoiding the high cost of generic conic solvers. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that our approach leverages GPU acceleration to speed up dual bound computations by orders of magnitude\, significantly enhancing the capability of BnB to certify optimality for large-scale problems.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899: Hanna Barton
DESCRIPTION:AI promises to enhance clinical decision-making\, improve efficiency\, and support better outcomes\, but realizing these benefits requires more than optimizing algorithmic performance. The impact of AI hinges on its alignment with the complexity of the clinical work it aims to support. This lecture synthesizes lessons learned from a series of applied AI projects spanning emergency care clinical decision support (CDS)\, patient placement\, and patient-facing communication and introduces an AI-CDS toolkit for designing and deploying human-centered AI. Together\, these examples underscore the need for thoughtful sociotechnical system design—and for building health systems’ capacities to evaluate\, adapt\, and implement AI in ways that remain accountable to both clinical realities and patient values.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899: Martijn IJtsma
DESCRIPTION:Designing for effective collaboration between humans and intelligent machines requires reasoning about the human-machine system as a whole—to uncover how their activities are interdependent and to develop system architectures that support coordination for resilient\, joint performance. In dynamic\, high-consequence domains such as aviation\, space operations\, and disaster response\, successful coordination is about synchronizing interdependent work processes of humans and machines with each other and with physical processes in the work environment. Considering work dynamics and synchrony early in design can help ensure that mechanisms for coordination are designed intentionally. However\, while descriptive models of human-machine interaction dynamics exist\, there is a lack of tooling for designers to explore how the dynamic behavior of human-machine systems is affected by early design decisions.\n\nThis talk discusses Work Models that Compute (WMC)\, a computational work modeling framework that helps designers analyze dynamics and synchrony of human-machine systems early in design. By integrating functional modeling\, work analysis\, and graph theory\, WMC makes explicit the relationships between human cognitive functions and machine algorithms\, highlighting critical dependencies and coordination demands.\n\nDr. IJtsmaI will present two case studies\, one in disaster robotics and one in air traffic management\, to illustrate how computational work models can serve as exploratory tools for envisioning and shaping more effective human–machine systems.

DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines older driver safety through a behavioural science lens\, challenging the assumption that chronological age alone defines driving risk. Drawing on longitudinal\, naturalistic driving evidence\, it highlights the roles of functional capacity\, task demands\, and self-regulation in shaping real-world driving behaviour. The findings have important implications for assessment\, licensing policy\, and supporting safe mobility in an ageing population.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899: Yue Wang
DESCRIPTION:This seminar begins with an overview of research at the Interdisciplinary & Intelligent Research (I2R) Lab focused on human–robot interaction and autonomy. We discuss computational models for human trust in robots\, how trust can be quantified and learned\, and how it can be incorporated into robot decision-making\, motion planning\, and control to achieve safer autonomy with higher user acceptance. Building on these models\, the talk highlights learning-based approaches that enable robots to reason under uncertainty and adapt to human preferences. We consider reinforcement learning in which key quantities\, such as value functions\, are represented probabilistically rather than as point estimates. These methods enable more stable and dataefficient learning. We then address collaborative settings involving multiple agents. By inferring global context through structured local information exchange\, these approaches support scalable\, robust collaboration without reliance on centralized critics or global information.
