SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: The Social Pyschology of Systemic Racism (Kickoff Event)
DESCRIPTION:What are the points of connection between structures and individuals when we think about bias? In the Fall 2024 RCGD Seminar Series “The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism\,” an all-star lineup of behavioral and political psychologists will define what\, in their words\, makes systemic racism systemic\, and how extra-individual levels of analysis could be incorporated in social psychological theories and methods. \n\nA kickoff for the series and reception will be led by series organizer Nick Camp.\n\nTalks in this series will be held Mondays from 3:30 to 5\, starting Sept. 16. Check the listings for details!\nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\nAs permissions allow\, seminars are later posted to our YouTube playlist.\n\nGroup Dynamics Seminar Series\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent seminars have included themes such as political polarization\, cultural psychology\, and evolution & human behavior.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“The Shift to Stock-Based Compensation and Gender Inequality in Wealth in the United States”
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Angelina Grigoryeva\, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto and the Stone Center inaugural Visiting Fellow\, kicks off the CID speaker series this fall. She will present:\n\n“The Shift to Stock-Based Compensation and Gender Inequality in Wealth in the United States”\n“This study identifies a novel explanation for gender inequality in wealth in the United States\; namely\, the important role of stock-based compensation. In the course of the financialization of the U.S. economy\, American firms increasingly provided workers with compensation based in part on company stock\, and 23 percent of private-sector employees now receive stock-based compensation\,” Angelina explained. “Compared to regular cash wages\, stock-based compensation may facilitate greater wealth accumulation due to higher rates of value appreciation over time\, additional capital income through dividend payments\, and more favorable treatment by the U.S. tax system. Consistent with this argument\, analysis of the Survey of Consumer Finances data finds that employees with stock-based compensation accumulate more wealth than those without it. However\, its wealth benefits are higher among men than women. Analysis of the NBER survey of employees with stock-based compensation shows that men are more likely to utilize its wealth-building potential than women\, thus contributing to gender inequality in wealth.”\n\nFollowing Angelina’s presentation\, we will be holding our annual Open House where you can come and see what we’ve been building\, meet the team\, and learn more about the research we are doing. Refreshments will be served and you will have a chance to win some new CID swag.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Invalid with Any Code
DESCRIPTION:Running complex analyses has become easier with the ability to Google commands or even use ChatGPT for writing code. People now grab data from anywhere they can get it\, run sophisticated analyses\, and put out interesting findings in public and scientific press. Then you find out their work is based on a dataset that has 95% missing data and asked four questions total. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of working with data\, and even better if you find something novel\, but the findings are only as good as the underlying data. Increasingly\, journals retract publications due to falsified or misleading data\, analyses\, or citations. \n\nThis session emphasizes the importance of understanding the basics – who\, what\, when\, where\, and how – of data collection before celebrating any results\, yours or others’\, and demonstrates the value of ICPSR metadata in that regard.\n\nPresenter(s):\n>Lynette Hoelter\, Archivist\n\nThis webinar will be recorded\, and the recording and slides (when available) will be available in the 2024 Data Fair YouTube playlist at https://myumi.ch/1bgyR.\n\nZoom FAQs are available at http://myumi.ch/kx2oo.\n\nThis webinar is part of the 2024 ICPSR Data Fair: Anchored in Data Reality. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism (Nick Camp)
DESCRIPTION:The first seminar in the series will be given by series organizer Nick Camp.\n\nRacial disparities in policing are profound and accompanied by equally persistent gaps in trust. Analyses of these and other inequities are often bifurcated between institutional and individual levels of analysis. In this talk\, Nick Camp describes how everyday contacts between the public and doctors\, teachers\, or police officers—institutional interactions—bridge these levels. Organizations direct and coordinate these agents' individual discretion\; at the same time\, individual agents relate to the public in ways institutions themselves cannot. The dual nature of these encounters links individual and dyadic processes to organizational and institutional ones. Using police stops as a paradigmatic example\, Nick Camp illustrates how institutional interactions contribute to racial gaps in police‐community trust\, how they can be used as a platform for changing the relationship between law enforcement and the public\, and how they can inform our understanding of inequality in other settings. \n\nTalks in this series will be held Mondays from 3:30 to 5\, starting Sept. 16. \nIn person: ISR Thompson 1430\nAs permissions allow\, seminars are later posted to our YouTube playlist.\n\nGroup Dynamics Seminar Series\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences.
