DESCRIPTION:First\, I will present one of the key technical ingredients of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Baryon Acoustic Oscillation distance measurements — the semi-analytic covariance matrices for the two-point correlation functions of point tracers implemented in the RascalC library. In the second part\, I will show clustering of DESI galaxies split by thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect\, a novel analysis possibility at the overlap of alternative clustering methods and CMB cross-correlations.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | Weak Gravitational Lensing Cosmology with the Roman Space Telescope High Latitude Imaging Survey
DESCRIPTION:NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is currently scheduled for launch in September 2026. Its High Latitude Imaging Survey (HLIS) will provide powerful tests of cosmological models through sensitive measurements of cosmic shear\, galaxy-galaxy lensing (GGL)\, and galaxy clustering. As a member of the Roman HLIS Cosmology Project Infrastructure Team (PIT)\, my work spans both Shear & Clustering Measurement (SCM) and Cosmological Parameter Inference Pipeline (CPIP). In this talk\, I will mainly talk about our Fisher forecasts of cosmological parameter constraints from combinations of the three probes mentioned above\, carried out as part of the HLIS PIT's Data Challenge 1 (DC1). We find good agreement between Fisher analysis and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis of the DC1 baseline data vector\, and we exploit the flexibility of Fisher analysis to investigate varied priors on cosmological parameters and on nuisance parameters describing unknown biases in photometric redshifts or shear measurements. I will also talk about my work on optimal reconstruction of Roman images (which is actually the most essential part of my current research). As an incoming postdoc at UMich\, I look forward to learning more about DESI (among other things) in the next few years.

DESCRIPTION:Observations of protoplanetary disks with ALMA have revealed a large diversity of properties\, but also some common tendencies in terms of dust/gas density and radial extension ratios\, as well as the appearance of features like rings and gaps or cavities. It is too late to observe the proto-solar disk\, but many of its properties can be inferred from the current distribution of planetesimals and using cosmochemical constraints on the chronology of planetesimal accretion and the isotopic heterogeneity of the disk.  I will review the available data\, which can be used to reconstruct the proto-solar disk. The view that emerges is that of a quite standard disk of about 90 au in gas radius and 45 au in dust radius\, forming planetesimals at two distinct epochs (one of which is very early\, while the disk was presumably still in Class-0 or Class-1 stage) and evolving towards a transition disk at the appearance of Jupiter and Saturn. Similarities and differences with the PDS70 disk will be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The discovery of a large number of extrasolar planets has demonstrated that our own system is not \"typical\". Exo-planetary systems can be very different from our own\, and diverse from each other. Understanding this diversity is a major goal of modern planetary science. The formation of planetary systems is not fully understood\, but major advances have been obtained in the last 10 years. New concepts have been proposed\, such as the streaming instability for the formation of planetesimals and pebble accretion for the formation of protoplanets. It is also now clear that planets forming in the proto-planetary disks have to migrate during their accretion\, if their mass exceeds a few times the mass of Mars. Accretion and dynamical evolution are therefore very coupled processes. This leads to complex evolutions\, very sensitive to initial conditions and fortuitous events\, that are the key to understand the observed diversity of planetary systems. The early formation of Jupiter and its limited migration due to the formation of Saturn are two fundamental ingredients that determined the basic structure of the Solar System. There is also evidence that the vast majority of planetary systems become unstable after the removal of the protoplanetary disk. The effects of this instability are very different depending on the masses of the planets involved. Our Solar System also experienced a global instability\, but fortuitously\, our giant planets did not develop large orbital eccentricities.\n\nBio: Dr. Morbidelli is one of the world's top experts in the dynamical history of the solar system (as one example\, the Nice model of giant planet instabilities as the origin of the late heavy bombardment). He is also an expert in the area of planet formation writ large\, with numerous contributions on the origins of planetary systems.  He won the Urey Prize from the planetary science division of the American Astronomical Society in 2000\, the Grand Prix Mergier-Bourdeix from the Académie des Sciences in 2009\, the CNRS Silver Medal in 2019\, and is a member of the Collége de France.\n\nThe talk will be followed by refreshments and time for discussion until 5:00 p.m.\n\nThe Departments of Physics\, Astronomy\, CLASP\, and Earth & Environmental Science have jointly established a new initiative named the Center for Habitable Planetary Systems (CHPS).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | The progenitor’s impact on globular cluster stellar stream models
DESCRIPTION:Dynamically cold stellar streams from globular cluster progenitors are important probes of the Milky Way’s dark matter\; their kinematic heating\, for example\, could help constrain the physical properties of dark matter subhalos. Direct N-body simulations are considered the ground truth\, but are often an impractical choice due to the computational expense. Particle-spray methods successfully produce stream models very quickly\, but are reliant on making certain approximations about escape physics. We have bridged the gap between these approaches with KRIOS\, a new basis-expansion N-body code. In this talk\, I will provide a high-level review of KRIOS’ technical details\, discuss preliminary results on streams from spinning progenitors\, and address the potential complementarity between KRIOS and the particle-spray distribution function developed here in Ann Arbor.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | Taming projection effects in EFTofLSS analysis of DESI DR1 and beyond
DESCRIPTION:The analysis of galaxy clustering measurements from surveys like Euclid or DESI is likely to be affected by the so-called projection effects\, which causes the 1D marginals of the analysis to not contain the bestfit\; this is a serious issue which can potentially harm the cosmological interpretation of these analyses. In this talk I will present a few avenues to tackle this issue\, either using simulation-calibrated priors\, a frequentist framework\, or a reparametrization approach. All of these approaches can significantly reduce the projection effects\, following different strategies. Specifically\, I will show the application of these methods to current DESI DR1 data\, and will compare the results among them and with the baseline DESI analysis\, discussing as well the prospects for DESI DR2 and Euclid future analysis.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Hidden Relics: The Past and Present Lives of Satellites Around Milky Way-mass Galaxies
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Galaxies don’t reside in isolation. Their outskirts contain a hidden ecosystem of faint stars and stellar systems that trace the history of their hierarchical growth through mergers --- one of the most important drivers of galaxy evolution. This dissertation aims to uncover this historical record and constrain the processes that govern galaxy formation and evolution across a wide range of mass scales\, from Milky Way (MW)–like systems to their ultra-faint dwarf companions. Although mergers can strongly influence the diversity of structural properties seen in galaxies\, the resulting dynamical response often erases the observational markers needed to infer the characteristics of the merger. However\, simulations show that material accreted into a galaxy is retained by its stellar halo\, preserving a \"fossil record\" that we can trace with resolved-star observations. I present the deepest stellar halo map of the nearby galaxy M94\, revealing that it has one of the smallest and most metal-poor stellar halos among MW-mass galaxies (M*=2.8x10^10 M☉\, [M/H] ~-1.4) and indicating that its dominant merger was with a galaxy less massive than the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). M94 also hosts the largest pseudobulge in the Local Universe\, but this work suggests that it was shaped primarily by secular processes rather than by this dominant merger. I also illuminate the structural diversity of faint satellite galaxies around M81\, finding among them the most compact (DWJ0954+6821)\, most concentrated (D1006+69\, n ~ 5)\, and one of the most elliptical (D1009+68\,  ϵ ~ 0.57) dwarfs known in the Local Volume. This work improves on ground-based characterizations of these systems and reveals that all four satellites are metal-poor and quenched\, with no evidence for tidal stripping despite their varied ellipticities. Lastly\, I successfully demonstrate the feasibility of wide-field\, multi-object fiber-fed spectroscopy in a low signal-to-noise regime for probing halo kinematics beyond the Local Group\, presenting the first measurement of the line-of-sight (LOS) velocity and velocity dispersion of NGC 253's stellar halo. I find that the stellar halo exhibits prograde angular momentum and detect kinematic substructure coincident with its known southwestern shell\, consistent with a recent accretion event. This work lays the foundation for conducting resolved stellar population science with next-generation observing facilities such as the Rubin Observatory\, Roman Space Telescope\, and the Extremely Large Telescope.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cosmo-Astro Seminar | Supernova Cousins: Leveraging Galaxy-group Information to Improve Type Ia Supernova Cosmology
DESCRIPTION:Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are a cornerstone of precision cosmology\, but at low redshift their accuracy is increasingly limited by systematic uncertainties. This has gained urgency with recent results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument suggesting possible cracks in the standard cosmological model\, including evolving dark energy. Among the dominant systematics are peculiar velocities which are tied to large-scale structure and environmental effects which are linked to galaxy evolution. Peculiar velocities have been studied through models of the velocity field and galaxy groups and clusters\, while environmental effects have been probed using rare “supernova siblings\,” multiple SNe Ia within the same host galaxy. These approaches\, however\, focus on either the motions of galaxies or the environment that these SNe go off in\, but not both at the same time. In this talk\, I introduce “supernova cousins”: SNe Ia in different galaxies within the same group or cluster\, thereby combining both effects. Using a sample of 1\,086 low-z SNe Ia from ATLAS\, we construct a sample of 93 SN Cousins. With this sample\, I compare distance scatter across environments and test the limits of how well we can use them to improve SN cosmology.
