SUMMARY:Performance:Korean Performing Arts Initiative | Transfigurations: Han Kang's The Vegetarian in Music and Words
DESCRIPTION:Experience an extraordinary evening where text\, sound\, and performance converge to explore themes of awakening\, resistance\, and transformation. Renowned Korean American jazz pianist Lisa Sung\, together with her ensemble of musicians and actors\, presents original songs inspired by The Vegetarian—the celebrated novel by Han Kang\, recipient of both the 2016 International Booker Prize and the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature.\n \n Drawing on the psychological intensity\, delicate lyricism\, and affective power of Han Kang’s writing\, Sung’s compositions blur the boundaries between text and sound\, inviting audiences into a world of sonic and scenic metamorphosis. The ensemble deepens the immersive experience\, with actors reading selected passages from The Vegetarian and animating Han Kang’s prose\, while shifting soundscapes and imaginative staging evoke the novel’s profound transformations\, encouraging deep listening and emotional resonance.\n \n Adding scholarly perspective\, Dr. Youngju Ryu—Professor of Korean Literature in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan and Director of the International Institute—will deliver a special lecture examining Han Kang’s literary works. SUMMARY:Performance:\"Re:Frame\" – Dance BFA Concert
DESCRIPTION:*This event is sold out. Limited tickets may be available at the door at 7:15 pm.*\n\nThe Department of Dance presents *Re:Frame* with choreography by senior Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance majors Emerson Forbes\, Irene Kim\, Julia Lepore\, Ava Menzel\, Ladina Schaller\, and Jessica Serres. \n\n*Film Is a Dream Realized*\, choreographed by Emerson Forbes\, is rooted in the contemporary fusion dance style and vintage Hollywood cinema – and inspired by her great grandfather\, a famous composer for classic films. This piece explores how cinematic elegance can be brought to life through the integration of live dance and projected film elements within a stylized black and white aesthetic. The choreography aims to create a richly textured atmosphere that echoes the expressive energy and timeless sophistication of classic movies. \n\n*decode & ENCRYPT*\, choreographed by Irene Kim\, is inspired by 2016 robotic installation “Can’t Help Myself” by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu and investigates the raw and visceral human toll of living in a high-pressure society. This piece offers the audience the opportunity to witness the quiet “bleeding out” of the personal self that results from the pressure to always be optimized\, to always perform\, to always keep up the appearance of being the best versions of ourselves. \n\n*Flipping Through the Pages*\, choreographed by Julia Lepore\, is a movement trailer based on a self-published novel she wrote titled *Different Fonts*. These two works of art encapsulate the psychology behind dance through fictional characters and an audacious storyline. In watching this piece\, you are immersed in a live action replication of the movement behind the words written on this novel’s pages. Beyond the 10 minutes of performing\, and the 400+ pages of writing\, there is still so much left unwritten…\n\n*Of Something I Left Behind*\, choreographed by Ava Menzel\, investigates time as something felt rather than measured. Through contemporary-based movement\, the work explores themes of remembering\, forgetting\, distortion as time moves forward\, and how nostalgia can feel both comforting and deeply unsettling.\n\n*Who’s there?!*\, choreographed by Ladina Schaller\, serves as a glimpse into a work performed at Nichols Arboretum on April 18\, where on a walk through the forest the audience will encounter fragments of personalities\, whispers of old stories and a world of unanswered questions. Local artists and friends are chipping in to create this world via dance\, live music\, acting and puppetry. \n\n*Pulsafuerte*\, choreographed by Jessica Serres\, explores the consequences of cultural clashing in a place it was unexpected to form. She explores how conflict and presence have an effect on the meshing of ideas and the creation of community.

From Julie & Scott Halpert\, who started Garrett's Space: \"We lost our precious son\, Garrett\, to suicide at age 23 on September 7th\, 2017. Garrett truly represented all that was good in the world. A kind\, compassionate soul who was always there to listen\, he was also bright\, extremely athletic and had a quick wit. SUMMARY:Performance:\"Threshold\" – Dance BFA Concert
DESCRIPTION:*This event is sold out. Limited tickets may be available at the door at 7:15 pm.*\n\nThe Department of Dance presents *Threshold*\, a collection of five works choreographed and directed by senior Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance majors Zamora Tamminga\, Sarah Snow\, Melisa Orduna\, Mia Brooks\, and Zeenia Shahpurwala. \n\n*Something has come undone* (Tamminga) is a series of vignettes of interpersonal relationships\, highlighting jazz music as a vessel for spontaneity\, resistance\, and connectivity. This theatrical work is set in a jazz bar\, where one’s intimate moments become deceptively public\, and where trying to forget may not be enough. \n\nDrawing from family dynamics\, sisterhood\, and early experiences of navigating unfamiliar emotions\, *Strangers Again* (Snow) examines how people carry\, suppress\, or redirect feelings\, and how those patterns manifest in the physical body. The dancers move through states of physical closeness and emotional distance\, tracing cycles of withdrawal\, fatigue\, and collective support. \n\n「三⾯鏡」*Sanmenkyou* (Brooks) is a triptych following three relational “faces”: the face shown to self\, the one to society\, and the face presented to the world through digital platforms\; where authenticity\, performance\, and global visibility coexist. Fundamentally based on the Japanese concepts of *honne* (true feelings) and *tatemae* (public façade)\, the conditions this describes are familiar to many multi-ethnic individuals navigating multiple cultural frameworks. \n\n*El Final* (Orduna) is rooted in the intensity of pivotal moments shaped by closure. The work explores the end of a chapter as it unfolds with heightened emotion and deep nostalgia. Through climactic\, tango-like scores and orchestral textures\, the dance’s journey traces the arc of longing and finality. Impermanence is the catalyst to growth\, unveiling the possibilities within every conclusion. \n\n*Ephemeral River* (Shahpurwala) explores the joy and silly little feeling dance brings when experienced onstage. Inviting the audience into a vibrant world shaped by play and genuine enjoyment\, the piece celebrates dance as a space for freedom\, humor\, and shared pleasure. The work invites performers and audiences alike to share in the simple joy of connection and moving together.

SUMMARY:Performance:\"ENTRY POINTS\" - Graduate Dance Performance Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Dance presents ENTRY POINTS\, a graduate dance concert featuring four choreographers exploring vulnerability\, presence\, and embodied inquiry in diverse contemporary dance practices. The evening showcases the unique voices of Kiana “KC” Cook\, Ginny Jiang\, Olga Rabetskaya\, and Kei (Kate) Tsuruharatani\, each presenting works that investigate the relationship between performer\, audience\, and environment. From the quiet\, meditative listening of *An Invitation to the Small Dance Party*\, to the dreamlike duality of *Insomnia*\, the philosophical inquiry of Jiang’s solo work\, and Cook’s socially rooted\, improvisational group choreography\, the concert invites audiences into immersive experiences where movement\, attention\, and relationality take center stage.\n\nAn interactive pre-performance event will begin at 7:00 pm\, with the theatre opening to audiences at 7:15 pm.

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Kenneth Kiesler\, conductor\n\nPROGRAM\n*Preamble: An introduction to Mahler’s Sixth*\nwith Kenneth Kiesler\, Esther Van Zyl (as Alma Mahler)\, and Joseph Horowitz (as Gustav)\n- *intermission* -\nMahler Symphony No. 6\n\nPlease join us for the final concert of the GRAMMY-winning University Symphony Orchestra’s 2025-2026 season. Following its recent performance of “The Jungle” by Wynton Marsalis with Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, a concert of seven World Premieres\, and a performance of the Verdi Requiem with University Choirs and soloists\, this culminating concert features Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony\, known as “The Tragic.” With its brilliant marches\, lyrical Andante – some of the most beautiful music he ever wrote – and other-worldly finale\, famous for its hammer-blows of fate\, Mahler’s Sixth speaks of the composer’s dark inner life and intuition about his future.\n\nThe concert will begin with *Preamble: An introduction to Mahler’s Sixth*\, hosted by Kenneth Kiesler\, with musical excerpts played by the USO\, and performances by Esther Van Zyl as Alma Mahler\, and Joseph Horowitz as Gustav. The preamble will explore Mahler’s Sixth in the context of his life and times – and its pertinence right now.\n\nSpecial guest Joseph Horowitz gives the pre-concert lecture\, \"Leonard Bernstein's Mahler: The Art of Advocacy\" in the Hill Lower Lobby. (Please note the 7:00 starting time)\n\n*The residency of Joseph Horowitz is made possible\, in part\, by grants from the U-M Arts Initiative and the Sally Fleming Master Class Fund.*\n\nJoseph Horowitz is an award-winning author\, concert producer\, filmmaker\, and broadcaster. SUMMARY:Performance:“ANOMALY” - Dance BFA Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Dance presents *ANOMALY*\, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance concert with original choreography by Anna Bodescu and Ame Vidrio\, in collaboration with U-M alumni and undergraduate dance students. \n\nTickets are free and are available via Eventbrite. The house will open at 7:00pm.\n\n*A Slippery Subject*\, choreographed by Anna Bodescu in collaboration with dancers\, addresses how we continue to rebuild and rebuild and rebuild the landscape that we call reality. Our time is spent\, earned\, lost\, frozen\, stretched\, and taken from us. This work investigates how and what we adapt in order to survive. In what ways is resilience beaten into our bodies? Drawing inspiration from the anecdotes and experiences from those far\, near and dear\, this piece unfolds as a nonlinear progression of universal underpinnings. \n\n*Eroding Landscapes*\, choreographed by Ame Vidrio in collaboration with dancers\, explores identity across past\, present\, and future states through four interconnected themes: ancestral connections\, bonds\, erosion\, and rebirth. Each theme examines both the transformation and stagnation of the self. These concepts are supported through both physical and symbolic materials. Raw elements such as dirt\, rope\, and wood intersect with manufactured objects like wire\, heels\, and contact microphones\, all on stage\, guiding the viewer toward layered interpretations of control\, decay\, lineage\, and self-determination.

SUMMARY:Performance:Rhiannon Giddens
DESCRIPTION:“Few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration.” (Pitchfork)\n\nArtist\, composer\, author\, and educator Rhiannon Giddens has made a singular\, iconic career out of stretching her brand of folk music — with its miles-deep historical roots and contemporary sensibilities — into just about every field imaginable. She has centered her work on lifting up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been overlooked or erased\, advocating for a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins through art.\n\nA founding member of the landmark Black string band Carolina Chocolate Drops and the all-female banjo supergroup Our Native Daughters\, Giddens is as much a curator as a creator\, serving as artistic director of the Silkroad Ensemble\, hosting a podcast that digs deep into opera arias\, publishing two children’s books\, and even performing music for the soundtrack of Red Dead Redemption II\, one of the best-selling video games of all time. Giddens takes the stage with her latest musical explorations for this capstone concert following her residency with the U-M Arts Initiative.

SUMMARY:Performance:Beyond This Point: Musician Minus Instrument
DESCRIPTION:What does a musician become without their instrument? Can they use their skills in other ways\, and still make music?\n\nMusician Minus Instrument both breaks and expands what it means to be a musician and a performer. The “instruments” run the gamut from a loose jack cable to an IKEA desk lamp to simple bodies and voices. Beyond This Point\, composed of Chicago-based collaborative percussion/arts trio Adam Rosenblatt\, John Corkill\, and AJ Morrissey straddles the disciplines of music\, theater\, and science through gesture and ingenuity.
