DESCRIPTION:Michigan Movement Performance Projects (M2P2) will premiere four new works by dance theater company VIM VIGOR\, led by Shannon Gillen and Jason Cianciulli\, and MARCAT\, the artistic home for Mario Bermudez Gil and American co-founder and SMTD alum Catherine Coury. The event features performances by U-M students\, alumni\, and other emerging artists from across the country\, and lighting design by Jess Fialko. \n\nDesigned and produced by Associate Professor of Dance Shannon Gillen\, M2P2 is an annual program and platform that provides seven weeks of physical practice training\, creation processes\, compositional mentorship\, auditions and interactions with active companies in the US\, as well as public performances like the one we welcome you to this evening. M2P2 operates much like a professional company\, and it champions Midwest talent in a supportive\, community-based environment\, where artists 18+ are able to advance their technical and performance skills\, while enriching their network with exceptional experiences and access to working choreographers. This is especially valuable in the post-pandemic dance landscape\, where emphasis has shifted away from singular coastal city hubs. This program connects exceptional dancers with hiring companies each year\, delivering key resources\, skills\, and experience necessary for rich and fulfilling careers in the dance field. \n\nTickets are free and available at the door\, but advance registration is encouraged.

Yano\, Professor Emerita of Anthropology\, University of Hawaiʻi and President of the Society for East Asian Anthropology.\n\nWhat does it mean to encounter one another through unfamiliar musics? How do relative power dynamics frame the encounter? What are the contexts for the encounter and its numerous aftermaths? This talk takes Professor William Malm’s 1959 milestone book\, *Traditional Japanese Music and Musical Instruments*\, as a historical touchstone that allows us to consider various framings of the global musical encounter. Written while a graduate student in his fourth month of PhD fieldwork in Japan\, this book became a classic\, introducing the English-speaking world to various forms of Japanese music and its instruments\, and remaining on the market from 1959 until 1993. In fact\, it is still taught in many ethnomusicology classrooms.\n\nHere\, I ask\, what can we still learn from Malm’s *Traditional Japanese Music and Musical Instruments*? What kind of cross-cultural phenomenon has it been and perhaps continues to be? What is the nature of such global musical encounters\, then and now? In the introduction to the updated version of the book\, Malm says that he wrote it “with innocence and youthful enthusiasm.” What is the role of the naïve encounter\, the improvisational encounter\, the creative encounter\, even the colonial encounter between musical systems and new audiences? I propose that we consider our numerous musical encounters\, then and now (including perhaps tonight’s concert) as a juxtaposition of sound systems\, aesthetic hierarchies\, and affective frameworks. We are a jumble of differences striving for some tenuous legibility. Here is where Malm and other facilitators like him assist and even inspire in that bid to “get it.” Lastly\, let us zoom forward to an era that pays rapt attention to both the message and the politics of the messenger\, I suggest that we consider the contrastive and potentially dialogic role of the indigenous performer\, the home audience\, the knowing listener as our necessary interlocutors. In the process of considering these historicized musical meeting grounds\, how do we embrace new and critical possibilities of global musical encounters?\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nChristine R. Yano has conducted research on Japan and Japanese Americans with a focus on popular culture. Her publications include *Tears of Longing: Nostalgia and the Nation in Japanese Popular Song* (Harvard\, 2002)\, *Crowning the Nice Girl\; Gender\, Ethnicity\, and Culture in Hawaii’s Cherry Blossom Festival* (Hawaii\, 2006)\, *Airborne Dreams: “Nisei” Stewardesses and Pan American World Airways* (Duke\, 2011)\, and *Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty and its Trek Across the Pacific* (Duke\, 2013). As director of the university's Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments\, he brought together high level scholarship\, curation\, and performance\; acquired important instruments including the first commercially made Moog Synthesizer\; and founded the U-M Gamelan Ensemble. He contributed significantly to the understanding of music across Asia through research and teaching\, and was recognized with numerous honors\, including the Fumio Koizumi Prize in Ethnomusicology and the Order of the Rising Sun from the Japanese government.\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTISTS\n\nDavid Furumoto is a professor emeritus from the Department of Theatre and Drama at the University Wisconsin-Madison\, where he taught in the acting and directing program for 21 years. He earned both his A.B. and M.F.A. at the University of Hawai’i-Manoa\, focusing on traditional Asian theatre performance. While a student\, he performed in numerous English-language premieres of Kabuki plays\, including notable roles such as Benkei in *Kanjincho* and Yuranosuke in *Chushingura*. In 1982\, he received the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship to study as a special observer at the National Theatre of Japan’s kabuki training class. He also holds a professional title from the Onoe School of Classical Japanese Dance.\n\nMusician and musicologist David Kansuke Wheeler spent twenty years in Japan studying and performing the shakuhachi with traditional masters and ensembles\, beginning in Tokyo in 1977 under Kinko ryū master Junsuke Kawase III (Kansuke I). In 2008\, in recognition of three decades of performing\, producing\, and teaching\, he received the performance name Kansuke II. Wheeler has played a central role in every major world shakuhachi festival since 1994. In 1999\, he co-founded the Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies\, which held its 26th camp in June 2024. DESCRIPTION:Amy Chavasse will discuss their nine-month collaborative project\, supported by the Center for World Performance Studies\, exploring the evolution of Contact Improvisation (CI) in Argentina – where it arose after the dictatorship’s end in 1985 – as a lens for examining democracy\, resistance\, and artmaking amid social upheaval. DESCRIPTION:Join the Department of Dance for an informal talk and reception with alum Sam Stone (BFA ’07\, dance)\, winner of the 2025 Professional Achievement in Dance Award presented by the SMTD Alumni Board.\n\nThis event will be held in the Perry K. Granoff Studio (Studio 4) in the Dance Building on North Campus.\n\nSAM STONE is a dance performance artist\, teacher\, community organizer\, and creator working as an Assistant Professor of Dance Studies at Appalachian State University. She has studied a range of focuses in the dance field\, coming away with a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Michigan\, then spending her career soaking up studies in release technique\, improvisation (solo and contact)\, anatomy and biomechanics research through the Axis Syllabus\, and a many wanders through travel and nature\, before arriving at the University of Utah for an MFA in Modern Dance. Sam has presented work in theaters in and outside of the US but prefers enchanting the homes and found spaces that she passes with art and design. Sam is responsible for directing and conceiving seven evening-length productions\, dozens of shorter pieces\, and more than 50 children’s dance works. She is also a creator of music\, clothing\, found object formations and discreetly performs in plays.\n\nSam has taught adult and professional dancers as a certified Axis Syllabus teacher. As a dance advocate\, Sam participates in the collective vîv\, who offers space (“Free Up the Space”)\, class (“Peer Practices”)\, and opportunities to underserved local choreographers\, disrupting the status quo of what it means to be a dancer in the US and challenging certain static tendencies of the scene. Sam also is responsible for organizing Salt Lake City’s twice-a-week\, rotating Contemporary dance series\, “Dance Class for Humans\,” in conjunction with her research about social skills as subscores within the dance classroom. As a performer\, Sam has worked with Joanna Kotze\, Kathleen Hermesdorf\, Bianca Cabrera\, Rosemary Hannon\, Ashley Trottier\, Aura Fischbeck and Leyya Tawil. DESCRIPTION:*You are falling\, but you never land.*\n\nTHE LONG FALL imagines a world suspended in contradiction – a space of constant motion where characters shift form\, time loops without resolution\, and realities collide. Inspired by the existential absurdity of being alive\, the failures of assigned roles\, and the blurred boundaries between play and performance\, the work explores the combustible territory between childhood imagination\, adult consequence\, and theatrical illusion.\n\nWhat does it mean when children play at war\, or love\, or death – enacting dramas they barely understand? And what happens when those same dramas become real\, lived\, or staged? Is the stage any less real than the battlefield\, the bedroom\, or the family dinner table? THE LONG FALL lives in this surreal overlap\, where innocence and impact are tangled\, where performance is both survival and surrender.\n\nSet against an original electronic score by Marshall Chadbourne\, the myth of the American mission – of family\, of purpose\, of safety – fractures. No promise can truly be kept. No victory comes without shadow. And still\, we try. We fail. We try again. Our lives tumble forward in the chaotic current of time\, and even as we fall through space\, we brazenly and optimistically reach for one another. These exquisite moments of connection\, caught between descent and delay\, are the flashes of meaning against all odds.\n\nMy process begins with the body. Behavior that rises into high physicality becomes a portal into the surreal\, emotional\, and mythic. The pressure between bodies becomes a kind of truth-teller. The audience is present – not just as observers\, but as witnesses\, co-dreamers\, and sometimes accomplices.\n\nCreation is collaborative\, volatile\, and alive. I bring movement\, text\, images\, themes\, and tasks\; the ensemble brings their interpretations – wild\, grounded\, broken\, ecstatic. We construct a world from fragments and contradictions. A world that drifts between war-torn realities and absurd dream-states. Where the nuclear family is both icon and ruin. Where love is earnest and unspeakable. Where we fail beautifully\, collapsing forward\, haunted and held.\n\nTHE LONG FALL does not seek to tell a linear story\, but to inhabit a state – a falling\, looping\, breaking\, trying. It is a meditation on fragile persistence\, on the way human beings continue inside impossible conditions. How even when the promise has been broken\, the mission has failed\, the family has splintered\, we keep playing. Inspired by the existential absurdity of being alive\, the failures of assigned roles\, and the blurred boundaries between play and performance\, the work explores the combustible territory between childhood imagination\, adult consequence\, and theatrical illusion.\n\nWhat does it mean when children play at war\, or love\, or death – enacting dramas they barely understand? And what happens when those same dramas become real\, lived\, or staged? Is the stage any less real than the battlefield\, the bedroom\, or the family dinner table? THE LONG FALL lives in this surreal overlap\, where innocence and impact are tangled\, where performance is both survival and surrender.\n\nSet against an original electronic score by Marshall Chadbourne\, the myth of the American mission – of family\, of purpose\, of safety – fractures. No promise can truly be kept. No victory comes without shadow. And still\, we try. We fail. We try again. Our lives tumble forward in the chaotic current of time\, and even as we fall through space\, we brazenly and optimistically reach for one another. These exquisite moments of connection\, caught between descent and delay\, are the flashes of meaning against all odds.\n\nMy process begins with the body. Behavior that rises into high physicality becomes a portal into the surreal\, emotional\, and mythic. The pressure between bodies becomes a kind of truth-teller. The audience is present – not just as observers\, but as witnesses\, co-dreamers\, and sometimes accomplices.\n\nCreation is collaborative\, volatile\, and alive. I bring movement\, text\, images\, themes\, and tasks\; the ensemble brings their interpretations – wild\, grounded\, broken\, ecstatic. We construct a world from fragments and contradictions. A world that drifts between war-torn realities and absurd dream-states. Where the nuclear family is both icon and ruin. Where love is earnest and unspeakable. Where we fail beautifully\, collapsing forward\, haunted and held.\n\nTHE LONG FALL does not seek to tell a linear story\, but to inhabit a state – a falling\, looping\, breaking\, trying. It is a meditation on fragile persistence\, on the way human beings continue inside impossible conditions. We will perform for everything and nothing.\"\n\nGUEST ARTIST BIO\n\nDescribed as “moving everyday sculptures\, artfully cast in naturalness” AYAKO KATO\, 2023 United States Artist Fellow\, is a kinetic philosopher/poet\, contemporary choreographer\, dancer\, and improviser originally from Yokohama\, Japan. The 20 minute performance restaged for the beautiful Matthaei conservatory emerges from movement research devised in site specific locations. It showcases various student organizations student organizations and performance groups aiming to promote authentic Korean culture through traditional and modern art forms. Korean drama\, music\, dance\, and food are crucial elements to the representation of Korean culture\, and our culture show provides students with the opportunity to present their culture and passions through different types of performances including traditional and modern Korean dance\, Korean drum performances\, and Taekwondo. \n\nOur Culture Show performers this year include Seoul Juice\, Sinaboro\, KASAmble\, MOLI\, UM Taekwondo\, FunKtion\, DB3\, K-motion\, and Female Gayo. Additionally\, the show will feature this year’s KASA student-produced parody of the iconic South Korean film Oldboy. \n\nThe culture show is the culmination of the hard work and effort of students\, who\, despite coming from diverse backgrounds\, have united through their passion and interest in Korean culture.

The concert features solo performances and a group ensemble dance.\n\nCaitlyn Wade will present four self-choreographed solos. *Ink* is a recently developed work which will be premiered in this showing. *Maybe*\, premiered in August 2025 at shape // matter movement showcase in downtown Ann Arbor. *Killing The Dog*\, was developed in June 2025 during Michigan Movement Performance Projects as a filmed composition and has been adapted for the stage. *Vincent* is a preview of a new idea that Wade will be developing into a larger work in the future.\n\nWade’s concert will include one group ensemble dance including herself and eight current Department of Dance students. Entitled *The Desert Underground*\, the work includes four sections: *Tasking the Hive*\, *Chant (Tomorrow’s Song)*\, *Procession*\, and *My Tusks Have Not Worn*. This piece offers the audience the opportunity to witness the quiet “bleeding out” of the personal self that results from the pressure to always be optimized\, to always perform\, to always keep up the appearance of being the best versions of ourselves. \n\n*Flipping Through the Pages*\, choreographed by Julia Lepore\, is a movement trailer based on a self-published novel she wrote titled *Different Fonts*. These two works of art encapsulate the psychology behind dance through fictional characters and an audacious storyline. In watching this piece\, you are immersed in a live action replication of the movement behind the words written on this novel’s pages. Beyond the 10 minutes of performing\, and the 400+ pages of writing\, there is still so much left unwritten…\n\n*Of Something I Left Behind*\, choreographed by Ava Menzel\, investigates time as something felt rather than measured. This theatrical work is set in a jazz bar\, where one’s intimate moments become deceptively public\, and where trying to forget may not be enough. \n\nDrawing from family dynamics\, sisterhood\, and early experiences of navigating unfamiliar emotions\, *Strangers Again* (Snow) examines how people carry\, suppress\, or redirect feelings\, and how those patterns manifest in the physical body. The dancers move through states of physical closeness and emotional distance\, tracing cycles of withdrawal\, fatigue\, and collective support. \n\n「三⾯鏡」*Sanmenkyou* (Brooks) is a triptych following three relational “faces”: the face shown to self\, the one to society\, and the face presented to the world through digital platforms\; where authenticity\, performance\, and global visibility coexist. The work explores the end of a chapter as it unfolds with heightened emotion and deep nostalgia. It examines the desperation that can emerge from belief systems that elevate hysteria\, and wishful thinking. At its core\, this is a heartfelt homage to Charlotte.\n\n*Low Light* (premiered at the Beijing Dance Festival\, 2014)\n\nIn 1956\, Rachel Carson wrote a script for the popular TV show *Omnibus* called *Something About the Sky*. She hoped to challenge the \"sterile preoccupation with things artificial\" and question our \"alienation from our source of strength.” Our absolute and essential humanness calls out for a re-imagined vocabulary of encounters. This dance seeks to uncover how this looks and feels across an expanse of emotional latitude – the imaginary line that connects points across the surface of the earth. Geographical imagery provides a framework as the dancer moves inside a quivering\, episodic narrative.\n\n*deux dogtooth* (premiered at the Arthur Miller Theatre\, 2017)\n\nA duet for Tulip and Chavasse that uses misappropriation and agitprop in a tightly structured improvisation that relies on intricately timed textural layering\, gestures and humor. For seven years\, my husband and I\, along with help from caregivers\, cared for my mother-in-law in our home as she slowly succumbed to dementia. Walking beside her during this time profoundly shaped my understanding of health\, caregiving\, and resilience\, and reinforced the importance of connection across all stages of life. *The Women Who Move Us* is both a tribute to her memory and a collective gesture of love and advocacy for all families and caregivers navigating memory loss. It also reflects my commitment to honoring the legacies of the women who came before us while supporting the health and well-being of those who carry them forward. The project will extend its reach through collaboration with the Scott Pranger ALS Center at Michigan Medicine\, linking the performing arts with medical research and care. By bringing together performance and science\, this partnership reflects the shared humanity at the core of both disciplines: the desire to honor\, heal\, and sustain life.\"
