During Love Data Week\, the NACDA/data on aging archive within ICPSR will host a webinar highlighting several different datasets and the different ways researchers can access them. This webinar will help attendees to answer the question “whose data is it\, anyway?” when browsing resources from NACDA and ICPSR. \n\nNACDA is the National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging and is funded by the National Institute on Aging. DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nMarch 12\, 2025\n12:00-1:00 pm EDT\n\nIn person\, Room G300 Perry Building\, and via Zoom.\nThe Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation. \n\nStatistics is a Core Competency for Sound Health Policy \n\nThe American Statistical Association vision imagines a world that relies on data and statistical thinking to drive discovery and inform decisions.  We know the challenges to attaining this vision are significant\, so collaboration is key.  As a statistician working to inform policy and decision making\, I know it will take collaboration across disciplines to address society’s biggest challenges—e.g.\, pandemic recovery\, climate change\, precision medicine\, education reform\, or criminal justice. In an era of data ubiquity and rapid analysis\, statisticians and data scientists are positioned to play a central role across application areas.  The gold standard for public policy is evidence-based decision making—deliberate and strategic application of real facts and research-supported principles that yields objective evidence. \n\nStatistical science is the foundation for evidence-based decision making.  As an interdisciplinary science\, it has applications to every field imaginable\, making statisticians uniquely qualified to lend their expertise in multiple policy domains.  Effectively informing policy requires becoming involved early in the design phase\; understanding the nature of the issue\; and knowing how to communicate\, educate\, and explain.  In this talk\, I will provide multiple examples from health policy to highlight both valuable contributions made by statistical scientists and lessons learned – and how this model of collaboration is relevant across other fields and application areas.  I will suggest areas of improvement based on lessons learned. And extrapolating from these successes\, I will suggest areas for future contributions in which the stakes are very high and involving statistics will be essential. \n\nMadhumita (Bonnie) Ghosh-Dastidar is head of the Statistics Group and a senior statistician and data scientist at RAND\, a nonprofit organization that improves policy and decision making through research and analysis. Her policy applications are focused on health and social justice.  Specific examples include evaluation of neighborhood-level intervention to improve diet\, health\; cluster randomized trials to improve outcomes among HIV positive persons\; and measurement or surveillance in health disparity. Her statistical expertise includes design\, sampling\, measurement\, missing data\, evaluations\, and longitudinal/multilevel modeling. Ghosh-Dastidar's major studies include assessment of sexual assault and harassment in the U.S. military and the first Singapore mental health study to assess national prevalence. She is the 2024 President of the American Statistical Association (ASA)\, the largest professional organization for statisticians and data scientists.  She is an elected fellow of the ASA. The ASA Committee on Women in Statistics recognized her work in statistics and data science by naming her \"Top 20 Woman in Statistics and Data Science\" (March 2019. Ghosh-Dastidar received her Ph.D. and M.A. in statistics from Penn State\, University Park\, PA\; she also holds a dual Bachelor's in mathematics and computer science from Albright College\, Reading\, PA.

DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nApril 2\, 2025\n12:00 - 1:00 pm EDT\n\nIn person\, room G300 Perry Building\, and via Zoom.\nThe Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation. \n\nImprove Survey Inference Using Bayesian Machine Learning\n \nWe consider survey inference from nonrandom samples in data-rich settings where high-dimensional auxiliary information is available both in the sample and the target population. When we have access to the individual-level data of the auxiliary variables in the population\, we propose a regularized predictive inference approach that predicts the outcomes in the population based on the large number of auxiliary variables using Bayesian additive regression trees (BARTs) and its extensions. Our simulation studies reveal that the regularized predictions using BARTs yield valid inferences for the population means with coverage rates close to the nominal levels. We extend the method to accommodate two-phase designs\, scenarios involving population data with confidentiality constraints\, and cases where only the population margins of the auxiliary variables are available. We demonstrate the application of the proposed methods using health surveys. \n \nDr. Qixuan Chen is Associate Professor of Biostatistics at Columbia University. She obtained her PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan in 2009. Her research focuses on survey sampling\, missing data\, measurement error\, data integration\, and Bayesian modeling. She collaborates extensively with interdisciplinary researchers on the design and analysis of longitudinal and cross-sectional health surveys at local\, national\, and international levels. Since 2018\, Dr. Chen has served as Associate Editor for Biometrics.

DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Survey Methodology\nJune 9-13\, 2025\n9:00am-12:00pm EDT\nLive Online via Zoom\n\nIntroduction to Survey Methodology\, a noncredit course\, covers the basic principles of survey design and methods and introduces the necessary components of a good quality survey. The course employs the Total Survey Error framework to discuss sampling frames and designs\, modes of data collection and their effects on survey errors\, the cognitive processes involved in answering survey questions and their impact on questionnaire design\, pretesting methods and post-data collection processing.  The goal of the course is to give an introduction to the skills and resources needed to design and conduct a survey. \n\nThe Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques provides rigorous and high quality graduate level training in all phases of survey research. The noncredit courses are open to all. The courses are live online via Zoom. Registration and payment are required. Course fees are based on the total number of hours assigned to each course\, the hours are listed on the course description. The 2025 schedule lists additional courses. Now instead of looking at question comprehension from a cognitive side\, the linguistic side will be explored including online tools. Factual questions will be revisited but with the goal of exploring different types of respondent memory problems. Solutions include basic aids to improve memory and alternative methods: decomposition\, calendars\, event history calendars\, internet enabled devices\, wearables\, apps and sensors\, and additional tasks on mobile phones. Also covered are the effects of telescoping and quasi-facts. Subjective questions will be revisited to understand attitude consistency and inconsistency and to cover the popular topic of satisfaction and other customer experience metrics. Alternatives methods to attitude measurement will also be covered: factorial surveys and multi-item scales. The course concludes with multi-cultural issues raised by Rincón and a mini appendix on ways to translate survey questions and evaluate the translation. DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nMPSDS M3 Series\n\nSeptember 3\, 2025\n12:00 - 1:00 pm EST\n\nIn person\, room 1070\, Institute for Social Research and via Zoom.\nThe Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation.\n\nWhere Granularity Matters: Calibrating Subdomain Inference for Binary Outcomes\nSmall area estimation (SAE) helps us make accurate estimates for local communities or groups\, such as counties\, neighborhoods\, or demographic subgroups\, when there are not enough data for each area. This is important for targeting local resources and policies\, especially when national-level or large-area data mask variation at a more granular level. Researchers often fit hierarchical Bayesian models to stabilize estimates when data are sparse. Ideally\, Bayesian procedures also exhibit good frequentist properties\, as demonstrated by calibrated Bayes techniques. However\, hierarchical Bayesian models tend to shrink subdomain estimates toward the overall mean and may produce credible intervals that do not maintain nominal coverage. Hoff et al. developed the Frequentist\, but Assisted by Bayes (FAB) intervals for subgroup estimates with normally distributed outcomes. However\, non-normally distributed data present new challenges\, and multiple types of intervals have been proposed for estimating proportions. We examine subdomain inference with binary outcomes and extend FAB intervals to improve nominal coverage and estimation efficiency. We describe how to numerically compute FAB intervals in the binary case and demonstrate their improvement through repeated simulation studies. Finally\, we apply the proposed methods to estimate COVID-19 infection rates in subgroups\, based on geography and demographic characteristics. This is joint work with Rayleigh Lei.\n\nYajuan Si is a Research Associate Professor in the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. Yajuan’s research lies in cutting-edge methodology development in streams of Bayesian statistics\, linking design- and model-based approaches to survey inference\, data integration\, missing data analysis\, confidentiality protection involving the creation and analysis of synthetic datasets\, and causal inference with observational data. She regularly teaches courses on statistics and sampling in the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science and the Joint Program in Survey Methodology.

DESCRIPTION:MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series\nMPSDS M3 Series\n\nIn person\, room 1070\, Institute for Social Research and via Zoom.\nThe Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation. \n\nWhile industry researchers need practical skills\, survey training often involves a balance of theory and practice. Training that focuses too heavily on practical applications may skip over foundational concepts\, such as sampling theory\, error reduction\, or bias minimization. Without these foundations\, researchers might design surveys that overlook important methodological considerations\, potentially compromising data quality in ways that negatively affect insights and decision-making. At the same time\, strong training programs often teach sophisticated survey methods (e.g.\, stratified sampling\, regression analysis\, psychometric scaling) that are used in academic or governmental research\, but are impractical or overly complex in most industry contexts without adaptation to the time and cost constraints often present. A middle ground of training is often missing--one that trains researchers on how to adapt or simplify these more complex methodologies for practical use in the real world and how to make them accessible without sacrificing quality. The presenter will discuss the holes often seen in hiring trained survey researchers and the complimentary development that is necessary to bring them up to speed to be successful industry practitioners.\n\nCurtiss Cobb is a Vice President of Research at Meta where he leads the Demography and Survey Science Team\, a quantitative focused research team that works across Meta to identify and share best practices and methodological innovations in demographic and survey research.  His team oversees the collection of millions of survey responses a day from around the world using mobile\, web\, face-to-face and other methods.  Prior to Meta\, Curtiss was a senior director of survey methodology at GfK and has independently served on advisory panels or consulted for the U.S. State Department\, CDC\, Associated Press\, World Health Organization\, OECD and various academic studies.  He holds a PhD in Sociology from Stanford University.

DESCRIPTION:MPSDS / JPSM Seminar Series\nMPSDS M3 Series: Mastery\, Methodology\, Meetups\n\nIn person\, room 1070\, Institute for Social Research and via Zoom. \nThe Zoom call be be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation. \nPlease note that many of the links have changed.\n\nAchieving Fairness in AI with Synthetic Data\nArtificial intelligence and machine learning increasingly inform decisions in hiring\, lending\, healthcare\, and justice. Yet real-world datasets often encode historical bias\, and models trained on them can reproduce or amplify inequities. Pre-processing via fair synthetic data is a promising: if we can generate data that mitigates bias at the source while preserving signal\, downstream models can be both fair and useful. This talk introduces FDA (Fair synthetic data via Data Augmentation)\, a statistically principled framework that makes the fairness–faithfulness trade-off explicit and controllable. FDA jointly models a fair submodel and a faithful submodel\, coupled by a single parameter $\alpha \in [0\,1]$ that quantifies the fraction of bias removed. We prove clear operating points: $\alpha=0$ yields maximal fairness (with larger deviation from the original distribution)\, $\alpha=1$ recovers the original data in probability (hence in distribution)\, and intermediate $\alpha$ values guarantee calibrated compromises with interpretable bounds. Practically\, FDA samples directly from simple predictive distributions\, avoiding heavy black-box training. We further provide theory connecting FDA’s $\alpha$ to fairness of downstream models. Together\, these results deliver a transparent\, efficient\, and deployable path to generating fair synthetic data without sacrificing essential statistical structure.\n\nDr. Bei Jiang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Alberta\, a Fellow of the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii)\, and a Canada CIFAR AI Chair. She received her PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan in 2014\, followed by a postdoctoral appointment in the Department of Biostatistics at Columbia University (2014–2015)\, before joining the University of Alberta as an Assistant Professor in 2015. Dr. Jiang has authored more than 50 journal articles—including in the Annals of Statistics\, Journal of the American Statistical Association and the Journal of Machine Learning Research and over 20 peer-reviewed conference papers at venues such as NeurIPS\, ICML\, ICLR\, and AAAI. Her research focuses on Bayesian hierarchical modeling\, statistical learning methods that advance privacy and fairness\, and federated statistical inference. Dr. Jiang has an extensive record of service to the statistical community. She is currently serving on the SSC Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion Committee\, the CANSSI Showcase Organizing Committee\, the Committee of the COPSS Presidents’ Award\, and the JSM 2026 Program Committee. She is an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Dr. Jiang is the 2025 recipient of the COPSS Emerging Leaders Award\, recognizing early-career statistical scientists whose leadership and scholarship are shaping the field.

Chan School of Public Health. Less explored is the role of state contextual factors in shaping this relationship between childhood SES and adult health. Illuminating structural and political determinants of health along the life span can improve interventions by broadening their reach to the population level\, complimenting interventions that concentrate on individual behavioral changes. In this presentation\, Dr. Dore will present findings from two projects that explore these questions using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. The first investigates how the relationship between childhood SES and health in adulthood varies across states\, and which state contexts may be driving observed differences. The second examines a specific policy intervention\, welfare reform in the mid-1990s\, to understand how exposure to different types of welfare programming in childhood shapes health years later.\"

HRS is a large-scale longitudinal study with more than 20 years of data on the labor force participation and health transitions that individuals undergo toward the end of their work lives and in the years that follow.\n\nDisability Data in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) is a 3-day online (Zoom) workshop intended to give participants an overview of the disability data resources in the HRS. Content lectures delivered by HRS co-investigators and content area experts will cover a range of topics including:\n\n●        The various ways that disability\, disabling conditions\, health\, and functioning are measured in the HRS\;\n●        How measures of disability have changed as the survey has evolved\;\n●        How the HRS captures disability benefit receipt in the survey and through and linkage with data from the Social Security Administration\;\n●        How disability-related topics like employer accommodations\, assistive technology and personal assistance are measured in the survey.\n\nIn addition to presentations on these topics\, the workshop will feature labs focused on working with work disability measures in Section M and disability spell data in the RAND HRS.\n\nStudents will have the opportunity to present research ideas and receive feedback from the workshop faculty and other students.\n\nThe course is designed for those with experience using HRS data or for those who have taken the introductory HRS workshop. The data training portion assumes some familiarity with STATA.\n\nAmanda Sonnega is a Research Scientist in the Survey Research Center of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan (UM)\, where she directs communication\, outreach\, and education efforts for the Health and Retirement Study. She received her Ph.D. through the Department of Health\, Behavior & Society at the Johns Hopkins University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship within the ISR program in Social Environment and Health. She has lectured in the UM School of Public Health\, teaching Psychosocial Factors in Health-related Behavior. Her research focuses on life course trajectories of physical and mental health\; institutional and personal factors associated with vulnerability and resilience in aging individuals\; and work transitions and their broad effects on health and well-being.\n\nThe Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques provides rigorous and high quality graduate level training in all phases of survey research. The noncredit courses are open to all. The courses are live online via Zoom. Registration and payment are required. Course fees are based on the total number of hours assigned to each course\, the hours are listed on the course description. The 2025 schedule lists additional courses. DESCRIPTION:MPSDS / JPSM Seminar Series\nMPSDS M3 Series: Mastery\, Methodology\, Meetups\n\nIn person\, room 1070 Institute for Social Research\, and via Zoom. \nThe Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation.\n\nSensitivity Analyses for Nonignorable Selection Bias When Estimating Subgroup Parameters in Nonprobability Samples: A Weighting Approach\n\nSelection bias in survey estimates is a major concern\, affecting both nonprobability samples and probability samples with low response rates. The proxy-pattern mixture model (PPMM) offers a method for conducting a sensitivity that assumes a nonignorable selection mechanism\, where selection depends on survey outcomes of interest. This approach requires summary-level auxiliary information for the target population of interest from a reference data source. While PPMM methods have been successfully applied to derive overall population-level estimates\, extension to domain-level estimates is challenging when population-level summaries for the specific subgroup are unavailable. This occurs when the domain indicator is observed only in the survey\, or for complex intersectional subgroups where stable/reliable population-level auxiliary variable estimates are unavailable. To combat this issue\, we propose a novel approach: creating nonignorable selection weights based on the PPMM based on a re-expression of the PPMM as a selection model. These weights can be directly applied to calculate domain-level estimates\, circumventing the need for domain-specific population-level summaries of auxiliary variables. They rely on a single sensitivity parameter (ranging from 0 to 1) that captures a spectrum of nonresponse assumptions\, ranging from an ignorable mechanism to an extreme nonignorable mechanism. We discuss differences in weight construction for continuous versus binary outcomes\, describe the necessary assumptions for these weights to produce informative domain-level estimates\, and illustrate properties through simulation. We then apply the approach to the Census Household Pulse Survey to estimate various subgroup quantities under a range of assumptions on the selection mechanism.\n\nRebecca R. Andridge\, PhD\nThe Ohio State University\nCollege of Public Health\, Division of Biostatistics\nAssociate Dean for Undergraduate Studies\nProfessor of Biostatistics\n\nDr. Andridge's research is focused on imputation methods for missing data\, primarily when missingness is driven by the missing values themselves (missing not at random)\, and on measures of selection bias for nonprobability samples. She also works on statistical challenges that arise in analysis of data from group-randomized trials. She collaborates with researchers across campus\, including the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research\, the Nisonger Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities\, and The OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center\, and serves as Lead Methodologist for several state-sponsored population-based surveys. She is an Elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association (2020).

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Getting Better All the Time: Metadata Enhancements in the ICPSR Catalog
DESCRIPTION:ICPSR is enhancing our metadata – the information we provide about each study\, like its title\, time period\, and subject – to make our data easier to find\, use\, and share. These improvements have been designed as part of ICPSR’s Research Data Ecosystem (RDE) platform\, supported by the National Science Foundation\, and are now being introduced to some live ICPSR data collections. \n\nEnhancements include:\n   * addition of persistent identifiers (PIDs) for people and organizations\, to support connections across systems\;\n   * improved controlled vocabularies to search by data characteristics such as format and collection method – like survey\, panel\, or GIS data\;\n   * new required fields to clearly indicate where\, when\, and what each data collection is about\;\n   * better handling of geographic coverage and new fields that help users find data from small towns to entire continents\, including nationally representative data.\n\nIn this presentation\, members of ICPSR’s metadata team will show these enhancements\, which are already live in some ICPSR data collections. We’ll also share practical tips for attendees who deposit data with ICPSR or support people who do – ideas to help depositors prepare to make the best use of these new fields as they roll out to more collections within ICPSR.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:NACDA Study Highlight – The Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (VETSA)
DESCRIPTION:The Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (VETSA) projects began in 2002 with the goal of understanding risk and protective factors\, including genetics\, for cognitive and brain aging starting in midlife. This NIH funded longitudinal study has multiple waves of data collection following the same group of non-patient\, community dwelling male veteran twins from when they were average age 56 to average age 68. The VETSA is heavily focused on in-person cognitive testing\, yet includes a wide array of psychosocial\, demographic\, medical history\, physical functioning\, and personality measures. \n\nVETSA data are available through ICPSR/NACDA.\n\nDuring this webinar\, we will feature the VETSA data producers\, who will discuss the history and applications of this collection\, and the NACDA team will demonstrate how to access the VETSA materials.\n\nParticipants will also have the opportunity to provide feedback and ask questions.\n \nThis webinar is free and open to the public.
