SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:When Rebels Win: Ideology\, Statebuilding\, and Power After Civil Wars
DESCRIPTION:What do rebels do with the state if they are able to gain control of it? Many assume civil wars destroy state capacity. In the Democratic Republic of Congo and Libya\, for instance\, victorious rebels perpetuated state weaknesses. Yet elsewhere\, like in China and Rwanda\, they built strong\, capable states. When Rebels Win argues that to explain varying post-victory governance we must look at rebel group ideologies: the ideas and goals around which a group is formed. Where a group's ideology falls along two key dimensions—programmatic versus opportunistic\, inclusive versus exclusive—influences how it governs. Programmatic-inclusive groups seek to reach across territory and work with populations to implement goals\, building the state to try to transform society. Opportunistic-exclusive groups\, by contrast\, prioritize personalized power and private wealth\, neglecting statebuilding. Examining rebel victors in Nicaragua\, Liberia\, Uganda\, and other cases in Africa and Asia\, Thaler challenges accounts of rebel behavior and post-war governance emphasizing factors such as resource availability or international intervention\, demonstrating the impacts of wartime rebel ideology and when civil war can\, counterintuitively\, lead to stronger states.\n\nAttend in person or via Zoom. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Aiton Lecture: Señorita Telefonista: Sexual Harassment\, Pregnancy Discrimination\, and Class Identities in Early Twentieth Century Mexico City
DESCRIPTION:At the height of worker mobilization in revolutionary Mexico City some of the most combative workers were telephone operators. In this talk\, Susie S. Porter takes us from switchboards to union halls\, and into the streets as working women fought for better wages and against marriage bans\, pregnancy discrimination\, and sexual harassment.\n\nTelephone operators’ struggles to defend their bodily autonomy were historically contingent and constructed through the material and discursive conditions of class. Countervailing practices of class distinction shaped women’s capacity to speak and informed their activism. As languages of class circulated––by management\, organized labor\, working men\, and working women themselves––working and middle- class identities were made and unmade. The success of organized labor hung in the balance.\n\nSusie S. Porter\, Professor of History and Gender Studies at the University of Utah\, is the author of two award-winning books: Workingwomen in Mexico City: Public Discourses and Material Conditions\, 1879-1931 (University of Arizona Press\, 2003)\; and\, From Angel to Office Worker: Middle-Class Identity and Female Consciousness in Mexico\, 1890-1950 (University of Nebraska Press\, 2018). Spanish-language versions of both books were published by El Colegio de Michoacán Press.\n\nHer forthcoming book is titled: Señorita Telefonista: Sexual Harassment\, Gender Discrimination\, and Class Identities in Early Twentieth-Century Mexico City (University of Nebraska\, 2026)\n\nPorter is also co-editor and contributor to 3 edited volumes and a documents reader in Mexican history. Susie is a Member of the Mexican Academy of History (as Corresponsal Internacional). She has held residential fellowships at the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies (2022-23) and L’Institut d’Études Avancées de Nantes\, France (2023-24).\n\nShe serves as a country conditions expertise for asylum cases\, was a co-founder of the Westside Leadership Institute (Spanish language version) and works as an organizer with the Salt Lake City Latinx community. She served as chair of the Gender Studies Division (2010-2020) and\, since 2021\, as director of the Center for Latin American Studies. For her work in the community\, Porter was designated Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at the University of Utah (2019).\n\nThis lecture is sponsored by the Aiton Lecture Committee.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sustaining Feminist Ethos: Queer and Feminist Journals under Anti-Gender Epistemic Claims in Turkey
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I approach anti-genderism not only as a repressive policy and a backlash\, but as a pursuit of epistemic authority aimed at displacing and replacing critical gender studies in Turkish universities. Drawing on in-depth interviews with editors of four queer and feminist academic journals published in Turkey\, I focus on how feminist and queer epistemic ecologies are sustained and expanded within and beyond academia\, as well as on the challenges and vulnerabilities that shape these efforts.\n\nWomen’s and gender studies (WGS) in Turkey—rooted in the 1980s—has long been mutually reinforcing with feminist and queer movements. The political-academic ethos cultivated by WGS within universities constitutes a key dynamic behind its targeting by various anti-gender actors\, mechanisms\, and procedures. I begin by tracing the trajectory through which anti-genderism in Turkish universities has shifted from being framed as a repressive politics to claiming a “constructive” epistemology that nonetheless excludes queer and feminist knowledge. I then analyze how these journals sustain their feminist ethos and intellectual integrity through practices of scholarly community-building\, as well as through financial\, editorial\, and epistemic strategies that strengthen feminist knowledge production and dissemination. Finally\, I reflect on the prospects of gender studies in Turkish universities amid administrative\, epistemic\, and political landscapes reshaped by anti-genderism.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Symposium on Judaism and Film
DESCRIPTION:This symposium celebrates the forthcoming 38-chapter volume The Oxford Handbook of Judaism and Film edited by Olga Gershenson. This volume offers the first comprehensive survey of the flourishing interdisciplinary field\, while challenging the geographic and conceptual boundaries of Jewish cinema. For too long\, the field has circled around a narrow set of places and stories\, about immigration\, assimilation\, antisemitism\, and the Holocaust. This Handbook proposes a broader\, more capacious understanding of Jewish film—one that moves past the assumption that Jewishness on screen must be mimetic\, historical\, or tied to the US\, Europe\, and Israel. Highlighting new research on Jews on and off screen in India\, Ethiopia\, Turkey\, Mexico\, the Arab world\, and beyond\, the contributions show how Jewishness operates as a global interpretive mode rather than a fixed set of themes. This expanded lens reveals how Jewish frames of thinking\, cultural practices\, and historical experiences structure filmmaking and spectatorship across wildly diverse geographies and contexts. The result challenges old stereotypes and opens up a bigger\, more complex world of Jewish film.\n\nThis symposium is an experimental and experiential format. Instead of formal presentations\, we will have three kinds of sessions: Salons\, Classrooms\, and Screenings.\n\nSUNDAY\, APRIL 19\nMichigan League\, Koessler Room (3rd Floor)\n10:00 - 10:30 AM Welcome\n10:30-11:15 AM Session 1: Judaism in Hollywood Biblical Epics\n11:30 AM - 12:30 PM Session 2: Jews in Indian Cinemas\n12:30 - 2:15 PM Lunch Break\n2:15 - 3:00 PM Session 3: Reading Jewish Films as Jewish Texts \n3:15 - 4:15 PM Session 4: Disability films and the Aftermath of the Holocaust\n4:30 - 5:15 PM Session 5: Pedagogy\, Judaism\, and Film\n\n\nMONDAY\, APRIL 20\nMichigan Union\, Wolverine Room (3rd Floor)\n10:00 - 10:45 AM Session 6: Fashion and Whiteness in American Jewish Immigration Films\n11:00 AM - 12:15 PM	Session 7: Judaism on Screen: from “Off the Derech” to Haredi \n12:15 - 2:00 PM Lunch Break \n2:00 - 2:45 PM Session 8: Erwin Leiser’s Holocaust Documentary \"Mein Kampf\" (1960)\n3:00 - 4:00 PM Session 9: Jewish Film Festivals\n4:15 - 5:00 PM Session 10: Jewishness in Post-Stalinist Soviet Cinema and TV\n\nRackham Graduate School\, Amphitheater (4th Floor)\n6:30 - 8:30 PM Film Screening: \"Sabbath Queen\" (2024\, dir. Sabbath Queen joins Amichai as he reinvents religion and ritual\, challenges patriarchy and supremacy\, champions interfaith love\, and stands up for peace and an end to the Occupation in Israel/Palestine.\nTrailer\n\n\nTUESDAY\, APRIL 21\nMichigan League\, Koessler Room (3rd Floor)\n10:00 - 10:45 AM Session 12: Ethiopian Jews on Screens\n11:00 AM - 12:15 PM	Session 13: Jews in Arab Cinemas\n12:15 - 2:00 PM Lunch Break\n2:00 - 2:45 PM Session 14: Transnational Dybbuks\n3:00 - 4:00 PM Session 15: Jewish British Cinema\n4:15 - 5:00 PM Session 16: Jewish-Muslim Relations in Film\n \nRackham Graduate School\, Amphitheater (4th Floor)\n6:30 - 8:30 PM Film Screening: \"My One and Only\" (2025\, dir.
He is torn between rejecting and embracing his destiny and becomes a drag-queen rebel\, a queer bio-dad and the founder of Lab/Shul\, a pop-up experimental congregation. Sabbath Queen joins Amichai as he reinvents religion and ritual\, challenges patriarchy and supremacy\, champions interfaith love\, and stands up for peace and an end to the Occupation in Israel/Palestine.\nTrailer\n\n\nTUESDAY\, APRIL 21\nMichigan League\, Koessler Room (3rd Floor)\n10:00 - 10:45 AM Session 12: Ethiopian Jews on Screens\n11:00 AM - 12:15 PM	Session 13: Jews in Arab Cinemas\n12:15 - 2:00 PM Lunch Break\n2:00 - 2:45 PM Session 14: Transnational Dybbuks\n3:00 - 4:00 PM Session 15: Jewish British Cinema\n4:15 - 5:00 PM Session 16: Jewish-Muslim Relations in Film\n \nRackham Graduate School\, Amphitheater (4th Floor)\n6:30 - 8:30 PM Film Screening: \"My One and Only\" (2025\, dir. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Mini Symposium Series: Lessons from the Blue Zones
DESCRIPTION:Since the dawn of time\, humans have searched for the fountain of youth. Globally\, people spend trillions of dollars on wellness and longevity. We are endlessly searching for the secret to extending the quality and length of our lives. \n\nBut what if some people had already found the secret? And\, what if they are living longer without even trying? \n\nThat is what Dan Buettner believes he has uncovered in the blue zones. \n\nWe will be sitting down with the New York Times best-selling author and National Geographic fellow for the next installment of our Mini Symposium Series\, Lessons from the Blue Zones\, on Friday\, May 8\, at 2 p.m. via Zoom. We will learn about what makes the blue zones so special and how we can incorporate their secrets into our everyday lives. \n\nFollowing her conversation with Dan Buettner\, Dr. Eva L. Feldman will be joined by Michigan Medicine’s own experts — Drs. David Conroy and Donovan Maust— for a live panel discussion\, during which they will also field audience questions.
