No less fierce today\, the debate has been regarded as the purview of museum trustees\, government officials\, and lawyers. A. E. Stallings\, herself a long-time resident of Athens\, has seen that the terms of the debate\, in part set by poets such as Keats and Byron\, owe much to the 19th and 20th century cultural milieus surrounding the presence of the Marbles in Britain—and their long absence from Athens. \n\nIn *Frieze Frame*\, her recently published book\, Stallings highlights the “strange stories and people surrounding the stones\,” in the course of which she reveals the wide range of issues that the debate touches on\, including “aesthetics\, Classics\, race theory\, economics\, geopolitics\, [and] our shifting climate.”\n\nA. E. Stallings is the author of three translations and five collections of poetry\, for which she has received several awards. What is the importance of this discovery? Which stars did this catalog include? And what was its purpose?\n\nIn this talk Professor Francesca Schironi will discuss this fragment together with her own study of the other fragments connected with Hipparchus’s star catalog (i.e.\, the Latin fragments in the so-called Aratus Latinus\, and in a Greek papyrus\, P.Aberd. 12). She will put these fragments in their historical and scientific context\, analyzing other\, different star catalogues and star lists of antiquity\, especially those from ancient Mesopotamia and Greece.\n\nFrancesca Schironi is a professor in the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan. The Falerii Novi Project\, which began in 2021\, has undertaken the first scientific excavations in a city famously founded after Romans sacked the nearby Faliscan city of Falerii Veteres and relocated its residents in 241 BCE. The partial urban plan of the site has been spectacularly revealed by geophysical remote sensing\, but our excavations are providing a refined chronology for the town’s occupation\, which was much more enduring than previously assumed\; surprising evidence for patterns of trade\, economic activity\, and environmental interactions\; and a comprehensive analysis of the city’s residential fabric. \n\nInstead of focusing on the city’s monumental and civic structures\, as is often the case for urban investigations\, our research questions are aimed at understanding processes of urban development from the bottom up. We have therefore focused on mundane spaces\, such as shops\, houses\, and roadside bars\, to provide a more complete picture of Roman urbanism beyond elite and administrative spaces. The project is arguably the most methodologically diverse investigation of a Roman town to date.\n\nMargaret M. Documenting the site’s evolution through a system of “levels\,” the excavators left behind a dense archival record of photographs\, tables\, notes\, drawings\, plans\, artifact inventories\, and survey results. Housed at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology\, this documentation has been consulted for a century but never systematically analyzed or disseminated. The most authoritative source remains an unfinished manuscript by Enoch Peterson (a professor at Michigan from 1924 to 1962)\, never published or made publicly available.\n\nToday\, a revival of interest in Karanis has created a demand for better curation and accessibility of these records. In response\, researchers at the Kelsey Museum are leading a digital initiative with two objectives. First\, drawing upon legacy survey data and new radiocarbon results\, we are using the game engine Unity to reconstruct and reinterpret the site’s chronological evolution in three dimensions. Second\, we are transforming Peterson’s manuscript and related materials into an interactive\, open-access resource. These collaborative efforts between Kelsey researchers\, staff\, graduate\, and undergraduate students go beyond digitization\, requiring the restructuring and reassessment of excavation data within an updated framework. \n\nAs we integrate new insights and methodologies\, our work sometimes calls the Michigan excavators’ original interpretations into question. This raises the need to balance faithful preservation of archival materials with that of reassessing the excavation results through contemporary archaeological lenses. This lecture explores the challenges and possibilities of conducting “archive archaeology” at Karanis\, creating new tools for exploring\, cross-referencing\, and reinterpreting this essential legacy dataset.\n\nTyler Johnson is a postdoctoral fellow with the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. He completed his PhD at the University of Michigan in 2023\, focusing on the transformation of domestic buildings during Late Antiquity in the region around Rome. He has conducted fieldwork at Gabii\, Italy\, since 2013\, where he now serves as director of topography and digital data. Tyler has also participated in a range of excavations and digital humanities projects in Italy\, Albania\, and the United States. His specializations include 3D modeling\, database curation\, and the use of game engines and graphical interfaces in archaeological and cultural heritage research. At the Kelsey\, Tyler is a member of the AGROS project\, an international collaboration investigating ancient diet through the analysis of organic materials from Karanis\, Egypt\, where the University of Michigan carried out excavations in the 1920s and 1930s. Having long recognized the medium as the “9th art”\, France prides itself in being one of the rare countries that has championed the potential of the medium early on\, and it’s not an overstatement to say that some of its comics authors and artists are considered national heroes. \n\nIn this presentation\, I will share the findings from my time spent in France researching an important cultural recognition of the medium: its museification. This talk will highlight my experience in comics museums in Angoulême and Blois. Many of the Kelsey’s artifacts are difficult to capture in 3D. Much of the collection is small\, from figurines and amulets all the way down to poppy seeds\, and many objects are shiny. Both characteristics present significant challenges to the methods archaeologists have traditionally used to create digital models\, which rely on cameras and reflected light. Even worse are glass objects and gemstones\, whose translucency defies these light-based methods. \n\nYet they are not impossible. This talk will introduce the advanced techniques we have adopted to deal with tiny and shiny artifacts\, the novel methods we are developing for capturing glass\, and the frameworks we have developed for archiving the massive amounts of data required by these techniques. It will also demonstrate the Kelsey’s multipronged\, innovative uses of digital modeling to communicate with the public\, such as publishing models online and bringing them into the galleries through digital animation\, 3D printing\, and augmented reality experiences.\n\nDr. Chris Motz is a Roman archaeologist and a specialist in digital technologies and methods. He received his PhD from the University of Cincinnati in 2021\, followed by stints teaching at Elon University and the University of Richmond\, before joining the Kelsey Museum in 2024. With regard to the ancient world\, most of his research centers on Roman industry and infrastructure and is rooted in analyses of complex datasets. This connects to his other primary focus: developing new and better ways to record\, analyze\, publish\, and preserve cultural heritage data\, with several published articles and chapters on digital field recording and excavation databases. In the field\, he serves as head of data for projects at the coastal Punic/Roman city of Tharros\, Sardinia\, and at Pompeii’s Porta Stabia neighborhood. This talk explores how he fused science\, beauty\, and spirit (from the tenderness of the Pietà to the grandeur of the Sistine Chapel) and how the Catholic Church received his daring vision of the human body as a vessel of meaning.\n\nElizabeth Lev\, an acclaimed art historian who teaches in Rome at the University of Mary and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas\, has served as a consultant to the Vatican Museums and written for publications such as The Washington Post and First Things. Author of The Tigress of Forlì and How Catholic Art Saved the Faith\, she has appeared on The Today Show\, Nightline\, and 60 Minutes\, and her TED Talk on the Sistine Chapel has reached over 1.9 million viewers! She is a well-known tour guide and has served as a consultant to the Vatican Museums for their art and faith itineraries\, projects with the Vatican Patrons of the Arts and wrote “Vatican Treasures: The Via Pulchritudinis\,” a film presented to Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
