SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:What is Critical Now? Media Studies Between Crisis and Critique
DESCRIPTION:Media today are our situation\; they constitute the fabric of living. But a number of new crises–and subjects–have profoundly shaped the field of media studies\, including an environmental turn in media studies\, elemental media\, ubiquitous computing\, distributed sensing\, and pervasive algorithms and artificial intelligence. Accordingly\, this conference revists and updates Mark B.N. Hansen and WJT Mitchell’s landmark Critical Terms for Media Studies (2010) by accounting for how these new ways of thinking impact the subjective\, aesthetic\, political\, material and economic registers of life and living in the twenty-first century. \n\nIn particular\, the conference will explore the many disciplinary and post-disciplinary transformations in the study of media since its publication (including the moment of “post-critique”). To that end\, the conference will bring together an interdisciplinary set of emerging scholars external to the University of Michigan with UM graduate students and faculty to reconsider the project of media critique today.\n\nThe morning session (10:00 am-11:30 am\, Digital Studies Institute Lab Space) is reserved for a limited-capacity working session with the invited speakers for graduate students involved broadly in the critical study of media. RSVP here: https://myumi.ch/qZkRx\n\nThe afternoon (2:00 pm- 5:00 pm\, Hatcher Graduate Library\, Hatcher Gallery\, Room 100) will consist of four 45-minute “Keyword Panel” sessions\, with a talk by each guest speaker followed by a dialogue with U-M faculty. The panel discussion is open to graduate students\, the Digital Studies Institute\, University of Michigan faculty and students\, and the general public to reflect on post-disciplinary or trans-disciplinary turns within the study of media technology and culture as well as new limits and possibilities for media critique. RSVP here: https://myumi.ch/qZkRx\n\n2:00 - 2:05 pm: Opening Remarks\n\n2:05 - 2:40 pm:	Dr. Thomas Pringle (USC)\, Keyword: “Environment\,” Respondent: Dr. Megan Ewing (Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures)\n\n2:40 - 3:15 pm:	Dr. Hannah Zeavin (UC Berkeley)\, Keyword: “Mother\,” Respondent: Dr. Andreas Gailus (Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures)\n\n3:15 - 3:30 pm: Break \n\n3:30 - 4:05 pm: Dr. Ranjodh Singh Dhaliwal (Basel)\, Keyword: “Concretion\,” Respondent: Dr. Justin Joque (Visualization Librarian\, Social Sciences and Clark Library)\n\n4:05 - 4:40 pm: Dr. Anna Shechtman (Cornell)\, Keyword: “Text\,” Respondent: Dr. Megan Ankerson (Communication & Media)\n\n4:40 - 4:55 pm:	Faculty Lightning Presentations \n\n4:55 - 5:00 pm: Closing Remarks\n\n\nSpeaker Bios:\n\nRanjodh Singh Dhaliwal is an Associate Professor of Digital Humanities\, Artificial Intelligence\, and Media Studies at the University of Basel\, Switzerland. He received his Ph.D. in Modern Culture and Media from Brown University. Pringle focuses on historical approaches to film and media\, with an emphasis on how media shape how environments are conceived in a given place and time and how technologies interact with physical environments.\n\nAnna Shechtman is an Assistant Professor of Literatures in English\, specializing in media studies and American literature. She is writing a two-volume history of the “media” and “data” concepts in the United States. The first examines the social formations and technologies of production that have allowed \"media\" to incorporate—and perhaps even supersede—the categories of \"art\,\" \"literature\,\" \"communication\,\" and \"culture\" in the second half of the 20th century.\n\nHannah Zeavin is a scholar\, writer\, and editor whose work centers on the history of human sciences (psychoanalysis\, psychology\, and psychiatry)\, the history of technology and media\, feminist science and technology studies\, and media theory. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Labor\, Machines\, and Economic Growth: Will Workers Be Needed in our AI Future
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nAI adoption is already changing how people work\, with a growing number of companies adopting AI systems to handle an increasing number of tasks. How will human work evolve as AI adoption progresses and what will that mean for how people earn a living? How will it reshape how people find meaning and purpose in life? Will the winner-take-most economy of the past several decades continue\, further increasing inequality\, or will AI be the great equalizer? While many things remain unknown\, economist Betsey Stevenson will take us through what we can learn from the past\, what we are already seeing today\, and what might be the best way forward for both income and human flourishing. \n\nBiography\nBetsey Stevenson is a professor of public policy and economics at the University of Michigan. She is also a faculty research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research\, a visiting associate professor of economics at the University of Sydney\, a research fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research\, a fellow of the Ifo Institute for Economic Research in Munich\, and serves on the executive committee of the American Economic Association. She served as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers from 2013 to 2015 where she advised President Obama on social policy\, labor market\, and trade issues. She served as the chief economist of the U.S. Department of Labor from 2010 to 2011\, advising the Secretary of Labor on labor policy and participating as the secretary’s deputy to the White House economic team. She has held previous positions at Princeton University and at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.\n\nDr. Stevenson is a labor economist who has published widely in leading economics journals about the labor market and the impact of public policies on outcomes both in the labor market and for families as they adjust to changing labor market opportunities. Her research explores women’s labor market experiences\, the economic forces shaping the modern family\, and how these labor market experiences and economic forces on the family influence each other. She is a columnist for Bloomberg View\, and her analysis of economic data and the economy are frequently covered in both print and television media.\n\nDr. Stevenson earned a BA in economics and mathematics from Wellesley College and an MA and PhD in economics from Harvard University.\n\nParking/Accessibility Information\nThe closest public parking lot to East Hall is the Forest Avenue Parking Garage (650 S Forest Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48104)\, which is a 5 minute (2 block/0.2 mile) walk to the venue. Street parking near East Hall is very limited.\nFor guidance on directions\, U-M faculty/staff parking\, and accessibility\, please visit: https://maps.studentlife.umich.edu/building/east-hall.\n\nPlease reach out to Ben Surgalski (surgalsb@umich.edu)\, MIDAS project manager\, with any questions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Friday Night AI
DESCRIPTION:Panelists: Prof. Florian Schaubb\, Prof.Roya Ensafi\nModerator: Prof. Rada Mihalcea\nInteractive Activities: Yara El-Tawil\, Snehal Prabhudesai\nOrganizer: Michigan AI Lab\, in collaboration with the Ann Arbor District Library\nWhen: June 6\, 6:30pm – 7:30pm\nWhere: AADL Ann Arbor downtown\,1st Floor Lobby (343 S 5th Ave\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48104)\n\nAs artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in our daily lives—from personalized recommendations to censorship and surveillance—questions about privacy have taken on new significance. What happens to the data we generate? Who has access\, and how is it being used? While AI offers powerful tools for everything from fraud detection to healthcare\, it also raises complex ethical and legal concerns around personal freedom\, consent\, and control over our digital identities. Join us for a conversation with experts in AI\, digital rights\, and censorship as we explore how emerging technologies are reshaping the boundaries of privacy. We’ll discuss where protections are falling short\, what policies are evolving\, and how we can build systems that balance innovation with personal agency.\nWith interactive activities developed by graduate students Yara El-Tawil & Snehal Prabhudesai.\n\nAbout the speakers:\n\nFlorian Schaub is an associate professor of Information and of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan. His interdisciplinary research combines privacy\, human-computer interaction\, emerging technologies\, and public policy. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FAST Lecture | Glass in the Late Roman and Early Byzantine Periods
DESCRIPTION:This FAST Lecture\, supported by the Kozma Fund\, will feature a presentation from Anastassios C. Antonaras—a specialist in the history of glass\, jewelry\, and textiles and an archaeologist\, curator\, and director of communication and visitor reception at the Museum of Byzantine Culture\, Thessaloniki\, Greece.\n\nHow did glass move from being a rare luxury in pharaonic Egypt to an everyday material in the Roman and Byzantine world? The turning point was the invention of glassblowing on the Syro-Palestinian coast in the 1st century BC\, which made production faster\, cheaper\, and more versatile. Massive workshops in the eastern Mediterranean supplied raw glass across the empire\, where local artisans transformed it into drinking cups\, perfume flasks\, jewelry\, mosaics\, and window panes. In the Late Roman and Early Byzantine periods\, glass not only served daily needs but also acquired new roles in Christian life: churches gleamed with glittering mosaics\, windows filled sacred spaces with light\, and glass lamps illuminated worship. This talk follows glass on its journey—from the furnaces of the Levant to households\, churches\, and monumental architecture—showing how one innovation reshaped both everyday experience and spiritual expression.\n\nFAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) Lectures are free and open to the public. This event will take place in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall. Light refreshments and food will be provided at 5:30 PM\, with the lecture starting at 6:00 PM.\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FAST Lecture | Archive Archaeology at Karanis: Recontextualizing the Michigan Documentation
DESCRIPTION:Although far from modern standards\, the University of Michigan excavations at Karanis (1924–1935) employed advanced recording techniques for their time. Documenting the site’s evolution through a system of “levels\,” the excavators left behind a dense archival record of photographs\, tables\, notes\, drawings\, plans\, artifact inventories\, and survey results. Housed at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology\, this documentation has been consulted for a century but never systematically analyzed or disseminated. The most authoritative source remains an unfinished manuscript by Enoch Peterson (a professor at Michigan from 1924 to 1962)\, never published or made publicly available.\n\nToday\, a revival of interest in Karanis has created a demand for better curation and accessibility of these records. In response\, researchers at the Kelsey Museum are leading a digital initiative with two objectives. First\, drawing upon legacy survey data and new radiocarbon results\, we are using the game engine Unity to reconstruct and reinterpret the site’s chronological evolution in three dimensions. Second\, we are transforming Peterson’s manuscript and related materials into an interactive\, open-access resource. These collaborative efforts between Kelsey researchers\, staff\, graduate\, and undergraduate students go beyond digitization\, requiring the restructuring and reassessment of excavation data within an updated framework. \n\nAs we integrate new insights and methodologies\, our work sometimes calls the Michigan excavators’ original interpretations into question. This raises the need to balance faithful preservation of archival materials with that of reassessing the excavation results through contemporary archaeological lenses. This lecture explores the challenges and possibilities of conducting “archive archaeology” at Karanis\, creating new tools for exploring\, cross-referencing\, and reinterpreting this essential legacy dataset.\n\nTyler Johnson is a postdoctoral fellow with the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. He completed his PhD at the University of Michigan in 2023\, focusing on the transformation of domestic buildings during Late Antiquity in the region around Rome. He has conducted fieldwork at Gabii\, Italy\, since 2013\, where he now serves as director of topography and digital data. Tyler has also participated in a range of excavations and digital humanities projects in Italy\, Albania\, and the United States. His specializations include 3D modeling\, database curation\, and the use of game engines and graphical interfaces in archaeological and cultural heritage research. At the Kelsey\, Tyler is a member of the AGROS project\, an international collaboration investigating ancient diet through the analysis of organic materials from Karanis\, Egypt\, where the University of Michigan carried out excavations in the 1920s and 1930s. His work focuses on the archaeological contextualization of organic samples selected for chemical analysis\, integrating the complex records of this legacy dataset with new methods in 3D modeling and data visualization.\n\nFAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) Lectures are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Through the Lens: Examining Colorful Objects from Karanis
DESCRIPTION:Since 2021\, IPAMAA PhD candidate Laurel Fricker has worked with Kelsey Museum conservators on *Investigating Color in Roman Egypt*\, a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. During this time\, she has studied pigments and dyes on artifacts from Karanis—mainly terracotta figurines and textiles—using various analytical techniques\, allowing her to reconstruct the colorful world that ancient people created and inhabited.\n\nThis research forms the basis of the Kelsey Museum’s newest Kelsey in Focus case\, which opened in mid-October. Curated by Laurel\, “Through the Lens: Examining Colorful Objects from Karanis” takes a close look at three figurines uncovered from domestic contexts at Karanis\, exploring how pigments—often invisible to the naked eye—can be investigated using digital microscopy and multispectral imaging. \n\nJoin us at this Flash Talk to learn more about Laurel’s research and exhibition. To register for this lecture\, fill out the form at https://forms.gle/jGTJinBfv3fsnTH37. Zoom log-in information will be provided upon registration. Please sign up by 9:30 AM the day of the event to ensure you receive a confirmation email containing the access code.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Exploring Digital Privacy from a Child’s Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Privacy@Michigan Event.\n\nConversations about children’s digital privacy are frequent\, and with good reason: ad revenue to tech companies from child viewers topped 11 billion dollars in 2023. These conversations include policymakers\, educators\, researchers\, and parents\, but children themselves are rarely included. The purpose of this talk will therefore be to explore what we know about children’s own perspectives on their digital privacy\, particularly in the age of artificial intelligence. We’ll cover what they notice\, care about\, and understand as it relates to online privacy and data security\, and what researchers can explore next to continue child-centered conversations about how best to keep children safe online.\n\nDr. Lauren N. Girouard is a National Science Foundation postdoctoral research scholar at the University of Michigan and Harvard University\, where she works with Drs. Susan Gelman\, Ying Xu\, and Jenny Radesky on projects examining children’s beliefs about AI chatbots and how those beliefs translate into digital literacy in home and classroom environments. She graduated with her PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Louisville in May 2024. Her work broadly examines how 4- to 17-year-old children think about\, trust\, and learn from emerging technologies and AI. \n\nAdd this event to your Google calendar.\nhttps://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0/r/eventedit/copy/MnRpdnA0Z3JpYzRhMWM2Y241NXMwNmdzYzYgdW1pY2guZWR1X2ZkczI0Z2V2cGE0MnY5NTc2bG5wZTJjbWxrQGc

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Privacy@Michigan: Interrogating the Quiet Escalation of Tech Billionaire Influence on Detroit’s Future
DESCRIPTION:Join Chris Gilliard\, privacy researcher\, and Tawana Petty\, artist and organizer\, as they discuss the impact of big tech on the future of Detroit.\n\nAn eleven-foot Robocop statue stands prominently in Eastern Market. A defense contractor headquarters is moving to the riverfront. A drone conference is scheduled to take place on land\, in the air\, and on the water. A large billboard and an annual conference signal Palantir’s investment into Detroit as “America’s Future\,” a billion-dollar renovated “train” station and technology campus is building a drone highway\, and the World Economic Forum has its eyes on the city as a potential location for its global Davos summit.\n\nWhat does this trajectory mean for the future of a predominantly Black city that has led the country in misidentification cases by law enforcement using facial recognition\, has had a median household income hovering under $40\,000\, and has more than 50% of its youth living in poverty?\n\nDr. Chris Gilliard and Tawana Petty will interrogate these questions and more.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Friday Night AI
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is emerging as a powerful tool used in an increasing number of applications\, including efforts to improve how we use and conserve energy\, from optimizing heating and cooling systems in buildings to coordinating smart grids\, forecasting demand\, and identifying new opportunities for efficiency across industries. At the same time\, training and deploying large AI models requires vast computational resources and significant amounts of electricity\, raising concerns about carbon emissions and other air pollution\, water consumption\, and the long-term energy footprint of AI itself. How can we harness AI’s benefits while avoiding the escalating costs of running increasingly large systems? What role can smaller models\, hardware advances\, and new design practices play in making AI more sustainable? Join us for a conversation with experts in AI & systems and energy and environmental law as we explore how to balance innovation with environmental responsibility. With interactive activities by graduate students Snehal Prabhudesai and Yara El-Tawil\n\nPanelists: Mosharaf Chowdhury\, Alexandra Klass\nModerator: Rada Mihalcea\n\nRada Mihalcea is the Janice M. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:architecture <> record /// a symposium
DESCRIPTION:How do architecture and the record – whether archives\, media\, or technologies of capture – shape one another? This symposium positions architecture as a dynamic register of social\, political\, and material conditions\, while also examining how practices of recording – from historical documentation to contemporary data infrastructures – transform the ways we see\, interpret\, and project architecture. These reciprocal lenses illuminate how current research is expanding what counts as architectural knowledge\, and point toward how architectural research might navigate and define its role within a rapidly shifting technological and political landscape.\n\nKeynote speakers: \nCaitlin Blanchfield (Cornell University) \nMenna Agha (Carleton University) \nAnooradha Iyer Siddiqi (Barnard College\, Columbia University)\n\nFeaturing PhD student lightning talks in conversation with each keynote. \n\nCo-sponsors: \nTaubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning \nPlanning and Architecture Research Group (P+ARG)\nCenter for South Asian Studies (CSAS)\nAfrican Studies Center \nAfrica Alliance at Taubman College\nDepartment of Anthropology \n\nFor further information and a full schedule\, visit www.archrecord.info\n\n*This event is generously supported by the Colin Clipson Endowment Fund and the Taubman College Annual Fund.*
