SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Climate Change and Human Health
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Larry Junck is a neurologist studying how brain health is compromised by climate change. As part of the 2025 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, the researcher and professor emeritus of neurology at U-M will discuss air pollution from fossil fuels\, the effects of air pollution on human health\, infections related to climate change\, other health consequences of climate change\, and what we as citizens and scientists can do.\n\nJunck earned bachelor’s degrees in physics and philosophy from the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana and his M.D. degree from the University of Michigan. His residency training in neurology was at Stanford University\, and he completed research fellowship training in position emission tomography at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He served on the U-M faculty at the University of Michigan Medical School for 39 years and directed the Brain Tumor Program for over two decades. He is the recipient of the health system’s Best Clinician Award and is on the Board of Directors of the Michigan State Medical Society.  \n\nJunck is the founder and leader of Michigan Medicine Climate Voices\, a member of Voices for Carbon Neutrality (U-M)\, on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Clinicians for Climate Action (MiCCA)\, and co-founder and co-leader of Neurologists Interested in Climate and Health (NICHe).\n\nThe U-M Biological Station — the largest of U-M's campuses at more than 10\,000 forested acres surrounded by lakes — is one of the nation's largest and longest continuously operating field research stations.\n\nFounded in 1909\, the Biological Station supports long-term research and education. It is where students and scientists from across the globe live and work as a community to learn from the place.\n\nThe Summer Lecture Series is a tradition at UMBS\, where we explore scientific topics with distinguished guest speakers from across the country so our community can learn about our natural world.\n\nThe free\, public talks are on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. in the spring and summer in Gates Lecture Hall at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, located at 9133 Biological Rd. in Pellston\, Michigan — about 20 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge.

Blending ecology and creative expression\, Chalmers’s immersive exhibition brings the forest to life through years of field work and creative experimentation. Experience the story of ecological change in America’s western forests through photographs\, watercolor paintings made with ash of burnt trees\, and tree resin-based paintings. \n\nJoin us for a unique experience of exploring ecology through art. A short guided tour will begin shortly after 10 AM\, with short films playing throughout the event. Bagels and coffee available while supplies last. RSVP is not required\, but is encouraged.\n\nAbout the Artist\nCatherine Chalmers is the 2025 Jean Yokes Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.\nCatherine Chalmers holds a B.S. in Engineering from Stanford University and an M.F.A. in Painting from the Royal College of Art in London. She has exhibited her artwork around the world\, including MoMA P.S.1\; MASSMoCA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\; Kunsthalle Vienna\; Today Art Museum\, Beijing\; among others. Her work has appeared in a variety of publications\, including the New York Times\, The New Yorker\, Washington Post\, ArtNews and Artforum. She has been featured on PBS\, CNN\, NPR\, and the BBC. Two books have been published on her work: FOOD CHAIN (Aperture 2000) and AMERICAN COCKROACH (Aperture 2004). Her video “Safari” received a Jury Award (Best Experimental Short) at SXSW Film Festival in 2008. In 2010 Chalmers received a Guggenheim Fellowship and in 2015 she was awarded a Rauschenberg Residency. In 2018 she created the course “Art & Environmental Engagement” and taught it at Stanford University. Her video “Leafcutters” won Best Environmental Short at the 2018 Natourale Film Festival in Wiesbaden\, Germany\; in 2019 it won the Gil Omenn Art & Science Award at the Ann Arbor Film Festival. Combined with other state initiatives and regional and national efforts\, this strategy and plan aim to support the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.\n\nAbout the Speaker:Thomas McKenney\, Associate Professor of Engineering Practice\, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering\, College of Engineering\n\nThomas McKenney is an Associate Professor of Engineering Practice in the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department at the University of Michigan. He directs a research laboratory in sustainable shipping\, maritime decarbonization\, and ship design. He also leads the development of a decarbonization education portfolio and manages collaborations with top industry centers and initiatives.\n\nThomas was previously Head of Ship Design at the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (Center) in Copenhagen\, a not-for-profit independent research and development (R&D) center with the vision to sustainably decarbonize the maritime industry by 2050. He was responsible for ship design activities within an active portfolio of over 50 R&D projects related to maritime sustainability and decarbonization\, including alternative fuel pathways and ship technologies. Before joining the Center in 2021\, he held various positions at Royal Caribbean Group\, where he was the technical and project manager of $1 billion first-in-class cruise ship design and construction projects. In collaboration with community activists\, academics\, researchers\, and designers\, the WPD Community Research Collective (CRC) utilizes research in order to serve the sustainability of the Detroit community. The WPD CRC uses data to visually show the socio-economic consequences of austerity policies in Detroit\, which have worked toward the dismantling of Black and Brown Detroit neighborhoods. By presenting a critical counter narrative\, WPD CRC uses knowledge as a tool to empower Detroit citizens as they fight for an equitable and beloved community. WPD CRC's most recent project addresses the public health crisis in Detroit as a result of unsafe and inaccessible water services.\n\nThe Real-World Perspectives on Poverty Solutions speaker series introduces key issues regarding the causes and consequences of poverty through an in-person and virtual lecture series featuring experts in policy and practice from across the nation. Our goal is to help build a broad community of learners to engage in these issues together.\n\nThis series is free and open to the public as well as being a one-credit course for U-M students (SWK 503\, Course #25751). Dreaming of Ramadi in Detroit was nominated for the Iowa Essay Prize\, chosen by Maggie Nelson as the winner of the 1913 Open Prose Contest\, and won CLMP's Firecracker award for Nonfiction in 2018. Her writing can be found in Ecotone\, Ninth Letter\, Callaloo\, Michigan Quarterly Review\, Guernica\, The Paris Review\, Vanity Fair\, and Gulf Coast\, among other journals. \n\nPetra Kuppers is a disability culture activist and a community performance artist. She creates participatory community performance environments that think/feel into public space\, tenderness\, site-specific art\, access\, and experimentation. Petra grounds herself in disability culture methods\, and uses ecosomatics\, performance\, and speculative writing to engage audiences toward more socially just and enjoyable futures.

He has written more than 200 scientific articles and 7 books. DESCRIPTION:In response to environmental challenges\, advocacy organizations are seeking optimal ways to increase public engagement. In this talk\, Prof. Hart will discuss how different message strategies may amplify or attenuate public engagement. Prof. Hart will first present findings from recent studies investigating how positive and negative sentiments in advocacy messages\, delivered via email and Facebook\, relate to public engagement. The studies reveal that for low-effort engagement\, positive sentiment is associated with more engagement. However\, for high-effort engagement\, negative sentiment is associated with more engagement\, whereas positive sentiment is associated with less. Prof. Hart will also share results from an experiment examining how news articles discussing climate change's unequal impacts\, based on race versus class\, affect beliefs and support for action. Overall\, White participants and those with high levels of symbolic racism had lower levels of belief and support when exposed to the race-focused condition. The results suggest that highlighting class-based climate disparities may be less prone to causing backfire effects.

In Chile\, the modeling frameworks developed by former SEAS professors Paul Seelbach and Michael Wiley have been applied to build policy tools for decision-making in the areas of sustainable hydropower and climate change adaptation. This talk examines the unforeseen challenges facing the development of landscape-scale fluvial ecological models that connect climate\, land-use\, and hydrology.

Spencer Lecture featuring Dr. Katharine Hayhoe\, Chief Scientist for the Nature Conservancy. The Spencer Lecture will be held at 5:30pm in the Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building\, Room 1355\, with a reception to follow.\n\nAbout the Lecturer:\nDr. Katharine Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist from Canada. She is a Paul Whitfield Horn Distinguished Professor and an Endowed Chair in Public Policy and Public Law at the Texas Tech University Department of Political Science. In 2021\, Hayhoe joined the Nature Conservancy as Chief Scientist.\n\nAmong her accomplishments\, she has been named:\n\"100 Most Influential People\"\, Time Magazine (2014) \n“United Nations Champion of the Earth”\, Science and Innovation Category (2019)\n\"100 Leading Global Thinkers\"\, Foreign Policy Magazine (2014\, 2019) \n\"50 World's Greatest Leaders”\, Fortune Magazine (2017)\n\nAbout the Nelson W. Spencer Lecture:\nNelson W. Spencer became the director of the U-M Space Physics Research Laboratory in 1948 and remained its guiding force until 1960. During his tenure\, SPRL established itself as a prominent leader in the exploration of the Earth's upper atmosphere. Dr. Spencer believed in the importance of including science goals in all space flight missions\, and was a pioneer in America’s space science program.
