DESCRIPTION:Join the Planet Blue Ambassador program and Kelsey Museum for “Inhabited World: Living with Nature”\, the fourth installment in the Object Spotlights series. This sustainability-focused tour explores how communities across the Middle East and North Africa lived with\, adapted to\, and reimagined their environments from 400 to 1800 CE. Through a focused display of objects\, the installation examines how people engaged with nature by augmenting\, capturing\, and consuming their surroundings—practices that shaped artistic expression\, domestic life\, and spiritual experience.\n\nDeveloped by graduate student curators Heidi Hilliker (MES)\, Sam Ross (IPAMAA)\, Bailey Franzoi (IPAMAA)\, and Kara Larson (UMMAA)\, with support from visiting curator Katherine Burge\, the exhibition highlights the deep and enduring relationship between people and the natural world\, offering insight into historical models of sustainable living.\n\nThe event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION IS FULL FOR THIS EVENT\, and we expect high attendance. It is highly unlikely that we will be able to seat walk-in guests. Instead\, we recommend joining the livestream (click the registration link and select the virtual option). \n\nThe Edmund Fitzgerald is the largest and certainly most famous shipwreck in Great Lakes history. Lost in a monstrous storm in 1975\, its entire crew of twenty-nine simply vanished into the waves and were later immortalized in a song by Gordon Lightfoot. Shipwreck historian Ric Mixter is one of only a handful of people who have visited the wreck personally\, and will share the results of his decades of research\, including rarely seen footage of the ship and interviews with former crew\, providing new insights into what caused the disaster. \n\nRefreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Hipparchus’s Ancient Star Catalogs
DESCRIPTION:A couple of years ago the news of the discovery of Hipparchus’s lost star catalog in an ancient manuscript (the so-called Codex Climaci Rescriptus) broke out\, appearing in newspapers\, magazines\, and important scientific journals around the world. What is the importance of this discovery? Which stars did this catalog include? And what was its purpose?\n\nIn this talk Professor Francesca Schironi will discuss this fragment together with her own study of the other fragments connected with Hipparchus’s star catalog (i.e.\, the Latin fragments in the so-called Aratus Latinus\, and in a Greek papyrus\, P.Aberd. 12). She will put these fragments in their historical and scientific context\, analyzing other\, different star catalogues and star lists of antiquity\, especially those from ancient Mesopotamia and Greece.\n\nFrancesca Schironi is a professor in the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan. She earned her PhD at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa\, Italy. Before joining U-M in 2010\, she was an associate professor at Harvard University. She is currently working on a translation and commentary of Hipparchus's Exegesis of the Phenomena of Euoxus and Aratus\, as well as a monograph on Hipparchus.

She received her M.D. from the University of Michigan and her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins\, and her research interests focus on the history of psychiatry\, health policy\, and diagnosis with a particular focus on children’s healthcare services.

DESCRIPTION:Join us 10 am-11 pm and tour the 172-year-old Observatory\, view our exhibits\, and participate in hands-on astronomy activities. And if weather permits\, view the sun with our solar telescope and the night sky with historic and modern telescopes. Telescope observing is weather permitting\, but we always strive to have fun things to do!\n\nFamilies welcome\, admission is always free\, and registration is not required.\n\nAs an added bonus\, Dean Regas will be joining us for two family-friendly space talks at 2 pm and 4 pm. Dean is an author\, podcast host\, and traveling astronomer who is known for bringing the cosmos to the public.\n\nBio: Dean Regas is a renowned public speaker\, author\, educator\, national popularizer of astronomy\, and an expert in observational astronomy. He served as the astronomer for the Cincinnati Observatory from 2000-2023 and was the astronomer in residence at the Grand Canyon in 2021. He is the author of seven books including “All About Orion\,” “100 Things to See in the Night Sky” and “How to Teach Grown-Ups About Pluto.” From 2010-2019 he was the co-host of the PBS program Star Gazers\, and he has contributed to Astronomy Magazine\, Sky and Telescope Magazine\, Farmer's Almanac\, USAToday\, Science Friday and Here & Now. He is also the host of a popular astronomy podcast \"Looking Up with Dean Regas.\"

DESCRIPTION:Join us 10 am-11 pm and tour the 172-year-old Observatory\, view our exhibits\, and participate in hands-on astronomy activities. And if weather permits\, view the sun with our solar telescope and the night sky with historic and modern telescopes. Telescope observing is weather permitting\, but we always strive to have fun things to do!\n\nFamilies welcome\, admission is always free\, and registration is not required.\n\nAs an added bonus\, Dean Regas will be joining us for two family-friendly space talks at 2 pm and 4 pm. Dean is an author\, podcast host\, and traveling astronomer who is known for bringing the cosmos to the public.\n\nBio: Dean Regas is a renowned public speaker\, author\, educator\, national popularizer of astronomy\, and an expert in observational astronomy. He served as the astronomer for the Cincinnati Observatory from 2000-2023 and was the astronomer in residence at the Grand Canyon in 2021. He is the author of seven books including “All About Orion\,” “100 Things to See in the Night Sky” and “How to Teach Grown-Ups About Pluto.” From 2010-2019 he was the co-host of the PBS program Star Gazers\, and he has contributed to Astronomy Magazine\, Sky and Telescope Magazine\, Farmer's Almanac\, USAToday\, Science Friday and Here & Now. He is also the host of a popular astronomy podcast \"Looking Up with Dean Regas.\"
