SUMMARY:Presentation:Securing Sensitive Data With U-M Box
DESCRIPTION:U-M Box is approved for most types of sensitive data\, including HIPAA. However\, the inherent technical security and legal agreements are not enough. It is critical that people storing sensitive data in Box are aware of their responsibility in properly configuring and providing access to files in Box.\n\nThis session will demonstrate how to securely use U-M Box to store and collaborate on sensitive or regulated data including hiding collaborators from each other\, allowing access to data by only by named collaborators\, choosing the right permission levels\, and advanced features that enhance security.\nSummary material will be provided\, allowing participants to take concrete guidance back to the office\, along with web links to reference for continuously updated information.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:The Complexity of Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Service learning integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience and strengthen communities. Service learning course objectives are linked to real community needs and are designed in cooperation with community partners and service recipients. Incorporating service learning experiences into our study groups is an important part of OLLI's strategic plan. OLLI is pleased to work with Groundcover News\, a local organization located in the basement of Bethlehem Church in Ann Arbor. This four-week service learning course will include a weekly discussion and volunteer commitment. Volunteering opportunities will include editing stories\, video interviewing homeless people for the website\, assisting with expunging criminal records and obtaining IDs. You are encouraged to eat a meal together to get to know the community. This class for adults over 50 meets Mondays through May 22nd. \nhttps://olli-umich.org/olli/index.php/member/ctlg/viewEventDetails/976

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Role of Institutional Agents in Promoting Equity and Inclusion in STEM Learning and Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Student outcomes in STEM are shaped not only by their individual efforts\, motivation\, aspirations\, and behaviors\, but also by the extent to which institutions\, departments\, and faculty create opportunities for students to succeed\, while taking active steps to put these opportunities within students’ reach. In particular\, students from groups that are historically underrepresented in STEM fields benefit significantly when educators act to remove cultural\, informational\, and social barriers that often prevent students from accessing the resources and learning experiences that support their academic success. STEM educators are uniquely positioned to create inclusive classrooms and departments and to provide key forms of social and institutional support to historically underrepresented students. \n\nIn this workshop\, faculty and graduate student educators will come to understand the concepts of equity\, equity-mindedness\, and the importance of institutional agents in promoting student learning and outcomes in STEM fields. Institutional agents are practitioners who use their own cultural\, social\, and human capital to act on behalf of students. Based on research by the Center for Urban Education (CUE) that has demonstrated the benefits that a network of institutional agents provides to historically underrepresented students in STEM\, this workshop will arm participants with specific strategies on how to promote equity and inclusion in STEM by employing equity-minded approaches inside and outside of the classroom. By engaging in multiple activities and through the use of self-assessment instruments developed by CUE\, participants will develop an understanding of the specific behaviors\, habits\, and mindsets of equity-minded institutional agents.

SUMMARY:Performance:Watching For Foxes
DESCRIPTION:We started out playing sad\, indie-folk songs\,\" say the members of Watching for Foxes\, who got together as friends in the small town of Fremont\, Michigan. \"We drew a lot from contemporary folk artists like Mumford and Sons and cats like that. We still love that music\, but as our lineup grew and solidified\, we were able to included many more of our diverse influences and make a sound that we like to think is all our own. We have elements of roots rock\, folk-rock\, and indie-rock in our sound\, and I think we've created a really cool little niche for ourselves that will serve us well in the future\; more importantly\, it reflects who we all are\, and who inspires us\, in a much more complete way.” Watching for Foxes has toured Michigan and the Midwest\, and with the release of their full-length debut\, \"Undone Bird\,\" this is a band that's ready for bigger things. Katie Pederson opens.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Broadening Participation in STEM: Research-Based Strategies for Institutions and Faculty
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lindsey E. Malcom-Piqueux\nResearch Associate Professor and Associate Director for Research and Policy\nCenter for Urban Education\, University of Southern California\n\nFor all interested individuals.\n\nTuesday\, May 9\, 2017\n10:00-11:15 am\nRackham Assembly Hall\n\nFor quite some time\, researchers and practitioners have sought to understand the complex factors that contribute to persistent inequities in access and outcomes in STEM undergraduate education. Armed with in-depth knowledge of the causes of these equity gaps\, institutions and faculty seek to provide students from historically underrepresented populations with the support they need to enter into\, persist\, and complete STEM degree programs. Though progress has been made in increasing the participation of historically underrepresented students in STEM\, this progress is uneven and inconsistent\, varying across fields and by student population. \n\nBased on an in-depth historical analysis of efforts to broaden participation in STEM\, Dr. Malcom-Piqueux argues that efforts to close equity gaps in STEM fields have faltered because of their reliance on traditional\, deficit-based perspectives of student success. Drawing upon research conducted at numerous higher education institutions in partnership with STEM faculty\, I offer an alternative approach to understanding and addressing equity gaps through equity-minded practice. Equity-minded practitioners call attention to patterns of inequities in student outcomes\, view these inequities as “problems of practice\,” not “problems with students\,” and feel a personal and collective institutional responsibility to address them. Equity-minded practitioners also question their own assumptions about students and student experiences\, recognize implicit biases and explicit stereotypes that can harm student success\, and continually reassess their practices to create change. The presentation will present research-based strategies for equity-minded practice in STEM education\, both inside and outside of the classroom.
