DESCRIPTION:Personal Statements for Pre-Health\nOne of the biggest hurdles for many in the grad school application process is the Personal Statement. This workshop will support you in the writing process. The Personal Statement requires a different form and serves a different function than other forms of professional and academic writing. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Understanding Criminal Record Penalties in the Labor Market
DESCRIPTION:This paper studies the earnings and employment penalties associated with criminal records using linked data on criminal justice interactions\, state laws on formal labor market restrictions\, and wages and employment. We estimate fixed effects models that decompose earnings into a worker's portable earnings potential and firm pay premia\, both of which are allowed to shift after a worker acquires a record. We find that sorting into lower-paying firms explains a small share of the record penalty. Legal record restrictions are not concentrated in higher-paying jobs\, meaning that sorting away from them contributes little to the earnings gap. Conditional on earnings potential\, however\, workers with a record are substantially less likely to be employed. The results suggest that criminal record penalties operate primarily by reducing employment and lowering earnings potential at every firm rather than increasing sorting into lower-paying jobs\, although the bulk of the gaps can be attributed to differences that existed prior to acquiring a record.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Theories of neural computation underlying learning\, imagination\, reasoning and scaling: of mice and machines
DESCRIPTION:Three remarkable abilities of brains and machines are to: (1) learn new behaviors from a single example\, (2) creatively imagine new possibilities\, (3) learn language\, and (4) perform mathematical reasoning.  I will discuss simple analytic yet quantitatively predictive theories of how (1) mice learn to accurately navigate on the first encounter in a new environment\; (2) how diffusion models creatively imagine exponentially many new images\; (3) how the structure of natural language governs how much data is required to learn it\, and (4) how language models can better do mathematically reasoning.  Theoretical physics approaches are essential in deriving all of these theories\, spanning techniques like statistical mechanics\, pattern formation\, nonlinear dynamics\, high dimensional geometry\, scaling analysis\, and control of entropy.  More generally\, just as biology once provided a new frontier of complexity for physics to study\, I suggest that AI now provides a new frontier in which physics can expand to yield a new\, fundamental scientific understanding of intelligence.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Magnetic Reconnection: What do We Know Now\, and What Remains Unsolved
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nMagnetic reconnection (MR) is one of the most important transport and energy-release processes in collisionless plasmas. Although governed by highly localized kinetic physics\, MR enables system-scale changes\, often involving explosive conversion of stored magnetic energy into particle energy. MR powers such diverse plasma phenomena as solar and stellar flares\, geomagnetic storms\, and the aurora\, and underlies many of the deleterious effects collectively referred to as space weather. Magnetic reconnection therefore constitutes an important and accessible example of a fundamentally multiscale physical process.\nWhile the global consequences of magnetic reconnection have been understood at a conceptual level for some time\, the detailed physics governing its operation remained elusive until recently. The advent of the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission\, which has provided—and continues to provide—unprecedented in situ measurements\, has supplied both new empirical insight and critical ground truth for theory and numerical modeling. MMS has largely resolved how MR operates at its core: the small spatial region that enables large-scale plasma dynamics. More recent results have begun to illuminate the mechanisms of energy conversion and the physical coupling between this central region and its surrounding environment. This presentation will summarize the current understanding of MR and highlight emerging research directions that follow from these recent advances.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Michael Hesse\, who received his PhD from Ruhr-Universität in Bochum\, is Vice Provost for Research and Innovation at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS)\, where he oversees research priorities that advance the Navy\, Marine Corps\, and Department of Defense. Prior to NPS\, Dr. Hesse was Director of the Science Directorate at NASA’s Ames Research Center\, leading a staff of about 500 engaged in Earth science\, planetary and astrophysical research\, and space biological research. Before joining Ames\, Dr. Hesse spent three years at the University of Bergen in Norway where he led the Geomagnetic Expert Service Centre\, a multi-national consortium providing space weather services to ESA. Prior to moving to Bergen\, Dr. Hesse had a distinguished 25-year career at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC)\, culminating in his role as the Director of the Heliophysics Science Division\, and founding Director of the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC). Dr. Hesse has published more than 300 papers (H index of 76). He is Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and member of Academia Europea\; and has received several awards including NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal\, NASA Distinguished Service Medal\, and AGU Space Weather and Nonlinear Waves and Processes Prize.\n\nThis seminar is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Moduli of curves and SL_n-bundles
DESCRIPTION:I will discuss some new Artin stack compactifications of the moduli of smooth curves\, which parameterize \"perturbed curves'\" consisting of stacky semistable curves equipped with line bundles that are trivialized away from the rational bridges. This yields an infinite family of stacks all of which admit the classical coarse space of stable curves as a good moduli space. As an application\, we construct a proper and flat moduli of Gieseker SL_n-bundles over the stack of stable curves\, parameterizing SL_n-bundles on perturbed curves subject to a stability condition.  The resulting moduli problem is integral\, lci and has an explicit tangent obstruction theory\; it could be viewed as a version of stable maps into the classifying stack BSL_n. This talk is based on part of joint work in progress with Damiolini\, Halpern-Leistner\, Inchiostro and Stephens.

Our volunteers can help you diagnosis bike problems\, guide you through repairs\, and provide the tools & materials needed to get you back to riding. \nThis is NOT a drop-off service: ALL participants are expected to stay and participate in repairs to learn basic bike maintenance with the support of our volunteers. Expect to get your hands dirty and leave feeling more confident in your skills!\nOnly one bike per participant. DESCRIPTION:CCMB/DCMB Seminar by Ting Wang\, PhD\n\n\"Unmasked: transposable elements as drivers and targets in cancer\"\n\nAbstract\n\nTransposable elements (TEs) represent almost half of the human genome. Historically deemed ‘junk DNA’\, recent technological advancements have stimulated a wave of research into the functional impact of TEs on gene-regulatory networks in evolution and development\, as well as in diseases including cancer. The genetic and epigenetic evolution of cancer involves the exploitation of TEs\, whereby TEs contribute directly to cancer-specific gene activities. I will provide a perspective on the role of TEs in cancer as being a ‘double-edged sword’\, both promoting cancer evolution and representing a vulnerability that could be exploited in cancer therapy. \n\nThe CCMB Seminar Series (Sponsored by DCMB) is held at Medical Science Building 1 (MS1)\, Room 4B700\, each Wednesday\, at 4:00 pm EST\, on bioinformatics-related topics.Each seminar is presented by an invited guest speaker.
