SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Winter Seminar Series: The Color of Power: The Evolving Relationship Between Race\, Skin Color and Power in American Politics
DESCRIPTION:Mara Ostfeld\, Gerald R. Form School of Public Policy\; Center for Political Studies\, University of Michigan\n\nThe Color of Power: The Evolving Relationship Between Race\, Skin Color and Power in American Politics\n\nSkin color matters. Within and across ethnoracial groups\, skin color affects life experiences\, including one’s financial earnings\, educational opportunities\, health outcomes\, exposure to discrimination\, interactions with the criminal justice system\, and sense of group belonging. While political coalitions in the U.S. have historically revolved around ethnoracial identities\, Dr. Ostfeld draws on her book (co-authored with Nicole Yadon) to argue that skin color is an increasingly important component of how people are identifying themselves and staking positions in American racial politics.\n\nThe U.S. is experiencing unprecedented levels of political polarization relative to the past few decades\, especially in terms of affective polarization\, or feelings of dislike and distrust towards members of the opposing political party. In this winter talk series\, we will hear from experts across disciplines (social psychology\, political science\, sociology\, communication) in order to better understand why political polarization is so high and what\, if anything\, can we do about it.\n\nRCGD Seminars will be held at ISR Thompson 1430. Events will be recorded. Graduate seminars precede the events from 2-3:30. To meet with external speakers or to find out more about these events\, contact Rachael Hamilton at rachaelr@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:32nd Annual Davis\, Markert\, Nickerson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The annual lecture is named for three U-M faculty members—Chandler Davis\, Clement Markert\, and Mark Nickerson—who in 1954 were called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. All invoked constitutional rights and refused to answer questions about their political associations. The three were suspended from the University with subsequent hearings and committee actions resulting in the reinstatement of Markert\, an assistant professor who eventually gained tenure\, and the dismissal of Davis\, an instructor\, and Nickerson\, a tenured associate professor.\n\nMonday\, February 6\, 2023\n4 pm – 5:30 pm\n\nUniversity of Michigan Law School\nHonigman Auditorium\n100 Hutchins Hall\n625 South State Street\nAnn Arbor\, MI 48109

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Annual Distinguished Lecture on Europe. The Invention of Fascist Governmentality: 1925-1940
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Victoria de Grazia develops the concept of “fascist governmentality” to capture the historically distinctive mode of political rule that emerged at the beginning of 20th century. Focusing on Italy\, she will explore how Mussolini assembled instruments of power\, networks\, and constituencies well outside of the ordinary sphere of governance to implement his solution to “the population question.” A focus on governmentality\, she argues\, helps account for the extraordinary political fortune of fascism globally in its first iteration (1920-1945)\, its capacity to disrupt the conventions of liberal imperial governance\, and the difficulty of defeating it through peaceful means. It is also better suited to explain the breakthrough of like-structured movements from the second decade of the 21st century than ahistorical and moralizing concepts such as totalitarianism\, illiberalism\, and populist and authoritarian democracy.\n \nVictoria de Grazia is the Moore Collegiate Professor Emerita of History at Columbia University and the author of *The Perfect Fascist: A Story of Love\, Power\, and Morality in Mussolini’s Italy* (2022)\; *Irresistible Empire: America's Advance Through Twentieth Century Europe* (2005)\; *How Fascism Ruled Women: Italy\, 1922-1945* (1992)\; and *The Culture of Consent: Mass Organization of Leisure in Fascist Italy* (1981).\n \nThis lecture will be presented in person in 1010 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration is required at https://myumi.ch/J8m4D\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Presentation:Indigenous DNA and Data: Community Approaches to Equity in Genomics and Health
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous people still constitute <1% of participants in precision and genomic medicine research despite endeavors to increase inclusivity. Past ethical issues related to Indigenous genomics have not been adequately reconciled and are now being repeated in the new era of Big Data. Concerns persist about the collectivization of Indigenous data into open-access databases that circumvent tribal research oversight\, the underestimation of socioeconomic and cultural factors contributing to health disparities\, and continued biocommercial exploitation of Indigenous biomarkers.\n\nDr. Tsosie will describe community-engaged research and describe paths forward that center Indigenous people as the agents of access for their own genomic and health data. The future of Indigenous genomics is not mere inclusion but through recognition of Indigenous genomic and data sovereignty.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISRMT Seminar: Asymptotics of q-orthogonal polynomials
DESCRIPTION:This talk focuses on q-orthogonal polynomials\, orthogonal polynomials whose orthogonality condition is supported on the discrete lattice: q^k\, for integer k . We investigate the behaviour of such polynomials in the case k>0 (q<1) and\, if time permits\, we study what happens when we relax this condition and allow k to be negative. Using the RHP framework we deduce the asymptotic behaviour of these polynomials as their degree tends to infinity\, as well as other properties such as uniqueness.\n\nA recording of the talk can be found at https://youtu.be/5HTbvRjAtbk

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Combinatorics: Grassmannian Cohomology & Symmetric Polynomials
DESCRIPTION:Surprisingly\, the cohomology ring of a complex grassmannian is isomorphic to a quotient of the ring of symmetric polynomials. While a great result in its own right\, understanding this cohomology ring can also help solve problems in enumerative geometry. In this talk I will outline a proof of this result\, and time permitting\, we will also see an application of this in enumerative geometry.
