SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: Spectral gaps and measure decompositions
DESCRIPTION:I'll introduce a new set of computable and orthogonally invariant quantities for a given probability measure on a Euclidean space. I'll show how these quantities can determine the extent to which the given probability measure can be decomposed as an equal weight mixture of two probability measures with significantly different second order statistics. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG Seminar on Geometry\, Dynamics and Topology: The growth of confined subgroups on a hyperbolic space
DESCRIPTION:Given a metric space X\, we call a discrete subgroup G of Isom(X) confined if the quotient X/G has uniformly bounded injectivity radius. When X is a higher-rank symmetric space\, Fraczyk and Gelander showed that all confined subgroups are lattices. When X is a rank-1 symmetric space\, Gekhtman and Levit showed that all confined subgroups are as “big” as normal subgroups of lattices. In this talk\, I will discuss an analogous result about confined subgroups acting on Gromov hyperbolic spaces and Teichmüller space. Joint work with Ilya Gekhtman\, Wenyuan Yang and Tianyi Zheng.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: Spatially informed biologically interpretable machine learning approaches for analyzing EEG data
DESCRIPTION:Biological neural networks (BNNs) are machine learning models that enhance the biological interpretability of artificial neural networks by modeling neural dynamics and providing insights underlying neural system behavior. In our previous work\, Hodgkin-Huxley neuron models were implemented in BNNs to classify electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. While biologically interpretable\, these models treat each electrode independently and ignore spatial relationships\, limiting their ability to capture large-scale brain dynamics.\n\nHere\, we develop trainable BNNs using time-aware backpropagation applied to networks of biophysically accurate neurons based on modified Hodgkin-Huxley equations\, integrated within feedforward and recurrent architectures. Neuron sets represent brain regions\, and synaptic weights reflect spatial distances and functional connectivity. These BNNs classify consciousness levels from EEG data\, extrapolate deeper brain activity\, and exhibit physiologically observed frequencies\, while hidden-layer neurons remain biologically interpretable. Overall\, spatially informed BNNs can capture deeper structures\, generate emergent spatiotemporal patterns\, and improve cross-subject generalization\, advancing both EEG interpretability and generalizability while bridging neural modeling and modern machine learning.
