DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book\, the title page. Such pages signal and inform\, incite pleasure and intrigue\, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.\n\nThe exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library)\, Monday-Friday\, 10am-4:30pm.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by James Charles Morris will be at Palmer Commons\, 4th Floor Atrium\, February 13 - March 10. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nJames Charles Morris (b. 1984)\, is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist\, who has engaged in the creative visual media  practices of photography\, collage\, painting\, and printmaking for 20 years. Morris has used his work to engage in various  social conversations addressing themes of race\, spirituality\, history\, mental wellness and community. As a native  Detroiter\, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown\, which is evident in his work. \n\nMorris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age\, as he took found objects from around his home and  created new works. However\, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a  gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those  names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans\, Hugh Grannum\, Lester Sloan\, Al Loving\,  Gilda Snowden\, Shirley Woodson\, Anthony Barboza\, and Eric Pryor among others. \n\nIn 2008\, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit)\, a brand that uses an array of visual statements and  designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \n\nIn 2019\, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage\, photo montage\, and abstract expressionism.  This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works\, that have engaged many within the  artistic community.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Developing Teacher Empathy – A Journey of Three Engineering Faculty Members Implementing Empathetic Actions in their Classroom
DESCRIPTION:In higher education\, teacher empathy is a term that refers to the empathetic skills of teachers and has been researched since the 1980s. Multiple studies in fields such as medicine\, nursing and psychology have shown that teacher empathy has reduced teacher burnout\, improved teacher satisfaction and student performance. Within engineering education\, there is increased research on empathy in recent years\, but primarily aimed at introducing and improving empathetic skills of engineering students. There is very little research on teacher empathy within engineering education. In my current study\, I explored the potential changes in perception of teacher empathy among three engineering faculty members as they utilized empathetic actions while teaching a second-year engineering course. I also explored the motivations and challenges that could arise in teacher empathy implementation. The outcome of this study could be used by faculty development programs\, department heads and university deans to expand the implementation of teacher empathy within a college or university.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Dissertation Defense: Closed geodesics and stability of negatively curved metrics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This dissertation explores the extent to which lengths of closed geodesics on a Riemannian manifold determine the underlying metric. In the setting of closed manifolds of negative sectional curvature\, it is known in certain cases---and conjectured to be true in general---that in order to determine a Riemannian metric on a given manifold up to isometry\, it suffices to measure the lengths of all closed geodesics (as a function of their free homotopy classes). This phenomenon is known as marked length spectrum rigidity.\n\nIn this dissertation\, we prove quantitative versions of some previously known marked length spectrum rigidity results. We consider pairs of Riemannian metrics where the lengths of closed geodesics agree---only approximately---on a finite set of free homotopy classes of curves. We prove the two metrics are \"approximately isometric\"\, meaning bi-Lipschitz equivalent with constant close to 1. We obtain explicit estimates for this Lipschitz constant in terms of the measurement error and the length of the longest geodesic in the finite set.
