This presentation critically considers the center’s checkered 75-year history in order to imagine how it might evolve. An anniversary of this magnitude offers a valuable opportunity to reassess the center’s influential institutional role within the field of Japanese Studies. This historical consideration informs the discussion of the working blueprint for our year of 75th anniversary programming\, which has been developed from surveys of CJS community members from an array of backgrounds. An explanation of the anniversary programming’s motivating questions\, rationale\, and goals will ground discussion with the audience of our ambitious plans for the year ahead.\n \nReginald Jackson is Associate Professor of premodern Japanese literature and performance at the University of Michigan.
