SUMMARY:Exhibition:Select Works By James Charles Morris
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by James Charles Morris will be at Palmer Commons\, 4th Floor Atrium\, February 13 - March 10. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nJames Charles Morris (b. 1984)\, is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist\, who has engaged in the creative visual media practices of photography\, collage\, painting\, and printmaking for 20 years. Morris has used his work to engage in various social conversations addressing themes of race\, spirituality\, history\, mental wellness and community. As a native Detroiter\, Morris has always had a fondness for his hometown\, which is evident in his work. \n\nMorris’ artistic influence began to manifest at a very early age\, as he took found objects from around his home and created new works. However\, his familial connections also informed his development. Grandmother\, Dell Pryor\, a gallerist in the city of Detroit across four decades\, exposed James to many emerging and master artists. Some of those names that ultimately influenced and inspired Morris include Adger Cowans\, Hugh Grannum\, Lester Sloan\, Al Loving\, Gilda Snowden\, Shirley Woodson\, Anthony Barboza\, and Eric Pryor among others. \n\nIn 2008\, Morris founded Definitive Style Exclusive (DSE Detroit)\, a brand that uses an array of visual statements and designs created with a simple yet blunt approach to touch on difficult and controversial topics within our society. \n\nIn 2019\, Morris began developing an artistic style that combines collage\, photo montage\, and abstract expressionism. This collage-montage style has led Morris to create a series of figurative works\, that have engaged many within the artistic community.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ACUM's DEI Book Club
DESCRIPTION:ACUM's DEIAP Committee is hosting a four-week book club for faculty and staff. The meetings will occur virtually on Wednesdays from 12pm-1:00pm starting February 15th through March 8th. We will be reading various essays from the book Social Class Voices: Student Stories from UM's Bicentennial. This book is a collection of student essays written by undergraduate students at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor Campus in 2017 about how social class shaped their experiences on campus. Each week we will require participants to come prepared having read approximately 15-20 pages prior to the meeting.  Participants are welcome to enjoy their lunch while attending as well. It is highly recommended that participants attend multiple sessions for consistency through the conversation\, however\, participants may choose to attend all 4 sessions or only some sessions\; the collection of essays from the book will not be reviewed sequentially. This book is available for free through U-M Libraries at the following link: book can be found here. If you would prefer a physical copy of the book\, you can purchase it on Amazon for $26.99. We encourage you to first see if you can use unit professional development funds to purchase the book. If you do not have funds available\, please reach out to Rachel Watson at rewatson@umich.edu and ACUM is happy to purchase the book for a limited number of participants. Lastly\, if you have a time conflict with this day/time and are unable to attend the event(s) at this time but would like to engage in this discussion\, please feel free to reach out to Rachel Watson and we will try to pair you with an individual or small group to host a discussion with.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Ideologies of Sovereignty after Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: The Baltic Case
DESCRIPTION:In Russia and the Baltic states\, competing ideologies of sovereignty have defined their positions in international relations and towards the war in Ukraine. I discuss how Russia’s sovereign ideologies of a great power and Lithuania’s as its victim were mutually constitutive after the collapse of the USSR. After 2014\, the Baltics’ radical politics of sovereignty\, grounded in its history of occupation and resistance against the USSR/Russia\, has become a framework to imagine the imminent war and\, after 2022\, the future of Europe with its center in the East.\n\nNeringa Klumbytė is associate professor of anthropology\, Havighurst Faculty at the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies\, and director of the Lithuania program at the Havighurst Center\, Miami University. She is the author of *Authoritarian Laughter: Political Humor and Soviet Dystopia in Lithuania* (Cornell\, 2022)\; co-editor of *Soviet Society in the Era of Late Socialism\, 1964–85*\, with Gulnaz Sharafutdinova (Lexington\, 2012)\; and co-author of *Social and Historical Justice in Multiethnic Lithuania: Ideas\, Experiences\, and Contexts*\, with Monika Frėjutė-Rakauskienė\, Andrius Marcinkevičius\, and Kristina Šliavaitė (Center for Social Research\, 2018). She was the editor of *Perspectives in Europe*. Her work has focused on topics of authoritarianism\; sovereignty\; (post)colonialism\, nationalism\, and ethnicity\; electoral politics\; propaganda and censorship\; historical justice and memory studies\; political satire and humor\; food\, consumption\, and marketing.\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at http://myumi.ch/NmNMq\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu.
