SUMMARY:Exhibition:FUN
DESCRIPTION:What Can ‘A Pile of Stuff’ Truly Become?\n \nUnlike any art museum exhibition you’ve seen\, FUN (working title) will transform before your very eyes as it becomes what you — our community\, our students\, and our visitors — make of it.\n \nOver the course of this exhibition\, UMMA’s glass-walled Stenn gallery will become a creation space. Piles of materials and supplies will form the backdrop of a collaborative\, summer-long free artists’ workshop. A place to create\, experiment\, glue\, paint\, and get messy.\n \nYou’re invited to roll up your sleeves and work have fun alongside local artist Mark Tucker and his U-M students to help create this colorful\, kinetic\, and altogether FUN art installation. Inspired by objects in UMMA’s collection\, you’ll create giant movable and interactive sculptures (AKA puppets) that will take on a life of their own. \n \nAlong the way\, you may uncover how art is made\, how a museum works\, and maybe even discover something about yourself.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, the UMMA Docent Program\, the U-M Lloyd Scholars for Writing and the Arts\, the U-M School of Education\, and the University of Michigan Credit Union Arts Adventures Program\, UMMA's Lead Sponsor for Student and Family Engagement.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kristina Sheufelt: Here Nor There
DESCRIPTION:Reception: Friday\, September 9th\, 5-7 pm. ALL ARE WELCOME!\n\nSeptember 9 - October 14\, 2022\n\nHere Nor There is a new solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist and environmentalist Kristina Sheufelt. Sheufelt is based in Detroit\, Michigan\, and recently received her MFA from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt uses a variety of media to blur the lines between land and body. \n\nFor the past several years\, Sheufelt has spent her summers living in remote backcountry locations throughout the United States working on research projects ranging from self-directed study of emotional psychology in the wilderness to monitoring marine wildlife populations. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt processes the emotional and ecological implications of returning to life in the city between reunions with the wild.\n\n\nKristina Sheufelt received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies in 2013 and her MFA from the University of Michigan in 2022.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Yuekai Sun\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Many instances of algorithmic bias are caused by distribution shifts\, but most algorithmic fairness practices were not developed with distribution shifts in mind. This discrepancy between the causes of algorithmic biases and the premise of prior work on algorithmic fairness leads us to study whether enforcing fairness mitigates algorithmic biases caused by distribution shifts. On one hand\, we show that there are scenarios in which enforcing fairness does not improve model performance. In fact\, it may even harm performance. On the other hand\, we derive sufficient conditions under which enforcing group and individual fairness successfully mitigates algorithmic biases due to distribution shifts.\n\n\nYuekai Sun is an assistant professor in the statistics department at the University of Michigan. His research is guided by the statistical and computational challenges in machine learning. Some topics of recent interest are algorithmic fairness\, transfer learning\, and federated learning.\n\nhttps://yuekai.github.io/

Students will be invited to post pre-writing goals and post-writing reflections in the document. Writers can also schedule a ten-minute Zoom meeting with Sweetland faculty during each session to discuss writing questions. We will also provide weekly writing strategies to habituate students to best writing practices.\nFor Virtual participants: Join via Zoom | Access the shared Google doc\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events.
