SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Singular Locus of Schubert Varieties
DESCRIPTION:The singular locus of a Schubert variety X_v is determined by its smoothness at the T-fixed points indexed by permutations u less than v under the Bruhat order. We construct an affine open neighborhood around each u in X_v\, decompose it into a product of an affine variety with some affine space. We define a combinatorial relation on pairs of permutations called interval pattern embedding\, generalizing the usual notion of pattern embedding. Finally\, we show how the open neighborhoods associated with different pairs of u<v are related when interval embedding occurs. This helps us reformulate known results on singular locus of Schubert varieties.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Unexpected Compression: Competition at Work in the Low Wage Labor Market\, joint with David Autor and Annie McGrew
DESCRIPTION:Labor market tightness following the height of the Covid-19 pandemic led to an unexpected compression in the US wage distribution that reflects\, in part\, an increase in labor market competition. Rapid relative wage growth at the bottom of the distribution reduced the college wage premium and counteracted approximately one-quarter of the four-decade increase in aggregate 90-10 log wage inequality. Wage compression was accompanied by rapid nominal wage growth and rising job-to-job separations—especially among young non-college (high school or less) workers. At the state-level\, post-pandemic labor market tightness became strongly predictive of price increases (price-Phillips curve)\, real wage growth among low-wage workers (wage-Phillips curve)\, and aggregate wage compression. Simultaneously\, the wage-separation elasticity— a key measure of labor market competition—rose among young non-college workers\, with wage gains concentrated among workers who changed employers and industries. Seen through the lens of a canonical job ladder model\, the pandemic increased the elasticity of labor supply to firms in the low-wage labor market\, reducing employer market power and spurring rapid relative wage growth among young non-college workers who disproportionately moved from lower-paying to higher-paying and potentially more-productive jobs.\n\nThe paper can be found under \"Related Links.\"

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Alum Connection with Theo Poling: How Experiences in Film\, Publishing\, and Activism Led to Pivotal Career Moments
DESCRIPTION:Theo Poling (they/them or he/him) amassed success in high school by self-publishing and selling their writing on Amazon long before it was popular on TikTok. When it came time to choose a college\, the Ann Arbor-raised Theo opted to go out-of-state and study playwriting and screenwriting at the University of Southern California where they published Black Knuckle and Deputy Maltese and Into the Intersticks. As they advanced deeper into the film industry\, however\, they also began to notice the inequities in the industry\, and knew that they could be doing more. This ushered in a defining career moment for Theo which brought them back to U-M as a transfer student. At U-M\, Theo continued to excel in writing and publishing\, but also developed a new passion too: higher education and mentorship. Theo now returns to LSA to answer questions about how they got started in different industries\, when they knew it was time to change course\, and how they continue to navigate career growth as a young professional. \n\nAbout Theo:\nTheo Poling graduated from the University of Michigan with degrees in Creative Writing & Literature and Arts & Ideas in the Humanities. While at the university\, Theo founded the Trans and Gender Nonconforming Arts Review. They are passionate about institutional equity and making sure all students feel seen and heard. In their free time\, Theo loves to hike\, foster cats\, and is hard at work writing novels and television screenplays for production.\n\n\nYou should attend this session if you are:\n- Interested in building a career in Creative Arts\, DEI\, Education\, or Film & Media Studies. \n- Curious about writing\, publishing\, querying or pitching for TV\n- Thinking about grad school after your undergrad degree\n\nWhat you’ll gain by attending:\n- Ideas for how to go about finding your first job after graduation\n- Perspectives on juggling rejection in the writing and creative industries\n- Answers to questions on how to get your writing published. \n\nRSVP NOW to be part of the conversation. \n\nThe Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event is on the first floor of a wheelchair accessible building which includes wheelchair-accessible restrooms on the first\, a gender-inclusive and accessible restroom on the [first floor]\, places to sit or stand during the event\, and accessible parking options nearby. To request other accommodations please contact LSA Hub Events at lsa.hubevents@umich.edu or 734-763-4674 so we can make arrangements.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Atomic Clocks as Quantum Sensors
DESCRIPTION:Atomic clocks are arguably the most accurate scientific instruments ever built. Modern clocks are astonishing timepieces guaranteed to keep time within a second over the age of the Universe. I will review the remarkable progress in atomic timekeeping and discuss a variety of applications of atomic clocks as quantum sensors. These applications range from measuring electric fields and geoids to dark matter and exotic physics searches. Massive entanglement of atomic ensembles offers an intriguing potential for improving the sensitivity even further. I will present our proposal on massive entanglement of millions of atoms with Rydberg gates.\n\nA short bio: Andrei Derevianko is teaching quantum physics and related subjects at the University of Nevada\, Reno (UNR). He has authored ~ 150 refereed publications in theoretical physics. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society\, Simons fellow in theoretical physics\, and a Fulbright scholar. Among a variety of research topics\, he has contributed to the development of several novel classes of atomic clocks and to precision tests of fundamental symmetries with atoms and molecules. Recent interests include detection of ultralight dark matter with GPS.\n\nUpon graduating from FizTech\, he was involved with a computer startup in Moscow and then moved to the United States. He earned his Ph.D. at Auburn and did a postdoctoral work at Notre Dame and at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. He has been a University of Nevada-Reno faculty since 2000.
