SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IN-PERSON | Women\, Connectedness\, and Self-Care
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here: https://www.cew.umich.edu/events/women-connectedness-and-self-care\n\nJoin us in person on March 8\, 2023\, for “Women\, Connectedness\, and Self-Care\,” where we will spend time thinking about what self-care means to each of us based on identity\, social location\, and privilege to recognize the intersecting dynamics that drive this concept. We will explore how mindful connections can help foster communities of care. Drawing on Black feminist thought this workshop centers the words of the late poet Audre Lorde who said\, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence\, it is self-preservation\, and that is an act of political warfare.” By identifying the ways that we are and are not caring for ourselves we can begin to cultivate new intentions and practices that model for our families\, students\, and colleagues why self-care is an integral part of a balanced and whole life for women.\n\nDuring the workshop\, participants will engage in small and large group discussions focused on ideas and questions from the brief readings. We will develop our own “Self-Care Bingo” boards as a culminating activity and participants will be invited to do their best to complete bingo on their board throughout the rest of the month. Participants will be invited back at the end of the month (or beginning of April) to celebrate and share their joys and challenges in community.\n\nThis workshop will kick off a month-long series of activities related to practicing self-care and cultivating communities of care in the process. Each week participants will receive an email with resources\, tips\, and tools for incorporating self-care into their daily lives. The email will help to continue the conversation begun in the workshop and help to strengthen connections between participants and CEW+.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Markov Decision Processes with Controllable Observations
DESCRIPTION:Markov Decision Processes is a common mathematical framework employed in decision making to factor in uncertainty during the optimisation process. We explore variations to the standard setup which involve controlled observations. Exploration through the control of the quality and accuracy of observations is combined with the exploitation of the gathered information to maximise expected rewards. This differs from standard partial information setups\, where one has access to a stream of noisy information which is not subject to active controls. The trade-off is akin to the exploration vs exploitation problem in reinforcement learning. We demonstrate this idea of controlled observations by requiring a payment for observing at each instant\, in this case the value functions satisfy a system of quasi-variational inequalities\, and we discuss aspects of the numerical implementation with some numerical examples.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Quality-Adjusted Cyclical Price of Labor
DESCRIPTION:Typical measures of wages\, such as average hourly earnings\, fail to capture cyclicality in the effective cost of labor in the presence of (i) cyclical fluctuations in the quality of worker-firm matches\, or (ii) wages being smoothed within employment matches. To address both concerns\, we estimate cyclicality in labor's user cost exploiting the long-run wage in a match to control for its quality. Using NLSY data for 1980 to 2019\, we identify three channels by which hiring in a recession affects user cost: It lowers the new-hire wage\; it lowers wages going forward in the match\; but it also results in higher subsequent separations. All totaled\, we find that labor's user cost is highly procyclical\, increasing by about 3\% for a 1 pp decline in the unemployment rate\, with three-quarters of this reflecting a procyclical quality-adjusted new-hire wage.
