SUMMARY:Film Screening:Ukrainian Film Series — Winter 2023
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian Film Series\n\nThursday\, February 9th\nLocation: MLB Aud 3 (MLB 1200)\nMariupol: The Chronicles of Hell\nThe fall of one of Ukraine's major cities\nMariupol — ruined but not conquered. The city in the east of Ukraine has survived the occupation\, total destruction\, and a humanitarian catastrophe. The story of Mariupol is an especially horrifying one\, with accounts reported that occupiers were murdering civilians\, and actively preventing them from escaping. This film is the story of the survivors\, and their life in a hell on Earth. Yet it's also a testament to the power of resilience\, and Ukrainian fighting spirit.\n\nThursday\, March 9th\nLocation: MLB Aud 3 (MLB 1200)\nПОВОДИР (The Guide) \nSoviet Ukraine\, the 1930s. American engineer Michael Shamrock arrives in Kharkiv with his ten-year-old son\, Peter to help \"build socialism\". He falls in love with an actress Olga who has another admirer\, Commissar Vladimir.\nUnder tragic circumstances\, the American is killed and his son is saved from his pursuers by a blind bard (kobzar). With no other chance to survive in a foreign land\, the boy becomes his guide.\n\nThursday\, April 6\nLocation: MLB Aud 3 (MLB 1200)\nShadows of Forgotten Ancestors\, Ukrainian: Тіні забутих предків\nA 1965 Ukrainian film by the filmmaker Sergei Parajanov based on the novel Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky that tells a \"Romeo and Juliet tale\" of young Ukrainian Hutsul lovers trapped on opposite sides of a Carpathian family blood feud.[2][3] New York Film Festival program described the film as an \"avant-garde\, extravagant\, sumptuous saga\" and a \"haunting work\" that combined folk songs and atonal music with fantastic camera work.[5] Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is considered to be the most internationally heralded Ukrainian film in history\,[6] and a classic of Ukrainian magical realist cinema.[7]

SUMMARY:Fair / Festival:Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2023: Kick-Off (Opening Event)
DESCRIPTION:The Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AA&PI HM) at the University of Michigan invites you to celebrate our heritage month opening event! While the month is federally recognized in May\, the campus community celebrates the month from mid-March to mid-April to align with the academic calendar. To celebrate the Pacific Islander (or\, Oceanian) community\, we also host PI Heritage Week dedicated to the histories\, heritages\, communities\, and identities of the Oceanian community. \n\nThe kick-off is expected to take place at 6:30 pm on March 9th\, 2023 at the Michigan Room in the Michigan League. This year our theme is Generational Change and Healing. Our Planning Committee selected this theme after conversations around wanting to build toward unity and increase self-awareness within our communities. The historical resilience of both the Asian American and Oceanian communities are clear and\, despite the violence we have faced and continue to face\, we choose instead to center our healing. Our communities often draw from inherited knowledge and wisdom\, invoking inspiration and a push for change in the younger generations and generations to come. This heritage month\, we hope to reinforce our healing by hosting events and conversations that build\, uplift\, and challenge our communities.\n\nIf you are interested in tabling and showcasing your art at the kick off\, please submit the form here: https://forms.gle/QdYmVXdqragyhMdE9\n\nKeep up with us on instagram @AA.PIHM\n\nPlease email Aia Hawari (aiah@umich.edu) with any questions or concerns you may have.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Library for All: U-M\, Google\, and the Importance of Having a Copy
DESCRIPTION:Can a universal library be achieved? It is an age-old dream. Google Books and HathiTrust have endeavored to fulfill it in the modern age. They are now well-established digital archives\, used by citizens\, scholars\, and students from around the world. The path to their creation was filled with aspirations and visions\, obstacles and hurdles\, negotiations and compromises. And the University of Michigan was at the center of these and other efforts in library digitization. Please join us for discussion with a panel of individuals who were intimately involved in the process: Paul Courant\, who as U-M Provost at the time shaped a visionary response to the opportunities of digitization and Google in particular\; Wendy Pradt Lougee\, who as head of the Graduate Library and of Digital Library Services spearheaded electronic access and nurtured innovative approaches to it\; John Wilkin\, a leader in digital humanities who provided leadership in negotiating critical understandings and agreements concerning usage of digital material\; and Roger Schonfeld\, co-author of Along Came Google: A History of Library Digitization\, which gives a comprehensive account of this important development in the history of modern access to knowledge.\n\nAs with all events at the Detroit Observatory\, visitors are invited to tour the Observatory after the event\, with observing if the weather permits.\n\nPaul Courant is the Edward M. Gramlich Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Economics and Public Policy\, Harold T. Shapiro Collegiate Professor Emeritus of Public Policy\, AND Arthur F. Thurnau Professor Emeritus of Economics and Information at the University of Michigan. Among many roles at U-M\, Courant has served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs\, as university librarian and dean of libraries\, and as director of the Institute of Public Policy Studies (predecessor of the Ford School). His academic work has recently focused on economic and policy questions relating to universities\, libraries and archives\, and the effects of new information technologies. He was a founding board member of both the HathiTrust Digital Library and the Digital Public Library of America.\n\nWendy Pradt Lougee served as University Librarian and Dean of Libraries\, and McKnight Presidential Professor at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities\, retiring in 2020. Prior to her appointment at the University of Minnesota in 2002\, Lougee held several positions at the University of Michigan over a 20-year period\, including Associate Director for Digital Library Services. Her work in launching and developing a digital library program at Michigan was recognized with the American Library Association’s Hugh Atkinson Award. Her research and publications have focused on digital library development\, information economics\, assessment of research behavior\, virtual organizations\, and e-research.\n\nRoger C. Schonfeld is the vice president of organizational strategy for ITHAKA and of Ithaka S+R’s libraries\, scholarly communication\, and museums program. With Deanna Marcum\, he wrote Along Came Google: A History of Library Digitization (Princeton University Press\, 2021)\, examining structural impediments to digital strategy and the role of an outside catalyst in fostering digitization among research libraries. Roger was previously at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and currently serves board member for the Center for Research Libraries.\n\nJohn Wilkin is the Chief Executive Officer of Lyrasis. Prior to joining Lyrasis\, Wilkin served as the Dean of Libraries at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign from 2013-2022\, as well as UIUC’s Interim Provost from 2017-2018. He was the founding executive director of HathiTrust and served in that capacity from 2008 until 2013. Over the course of his career at the Universities of Michigan and Virginia\, Wilkin was an early leader in the development of digital libraries\, focusing on combining large-scale discovery with preservation strategies. He collaborated in creating the first legal agreement for the Google Books project. His focus on copyright and preservation played a pivotal role in HathiTrust’s Fair Use strategy\, which was successfully defended in court and underpins HathiTrust today.

The film centers on Tony Takitani\, the neglected only son of a jazz musician. His talent in drawing leads to a successful career in advertising\, a life he is ambivalent about. After an encounter with client Eiko\, played by Miyazawa Rie\, he comes alive. They marry and live a rich life together—until they don’t. With music by Ryuichi Sakamoto\, Ichikawa captures a spiritual isolation felt at the turn of the century in his stunning yet subtle cinematic technique. \n\nRead more about the film\, including ratings\, at the IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420260/?ref_=tt_mv_close\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us.
