DESCRIPTION:The American Institutions Group (AIG) is a Rackham interdisciplinary workshop for faculty and graduate students that meets twice a month to discuss recent and forthcoming research on American political institutions (e.g. Congress\, the presidency\, state legislatures and governors\, the courts\, and the bureaucracy). We aim to offer new and varied perspectives for graduate students to harness in their own work\; encourage conversations that breed new research ideas\; and spur innovative collaborations among our participants. AIG participants are scholars in political science\, public health\, social work\, public policy\, and economics interested in examining American political institutions from a wide variety of perspectives.

DESCRIPTION:Looking for something to feed your brain on your lunch hour? The Mid-Day Morsel tour at the Kelsey Museum is a 30-minute taste of ancient Mediterranean history and artifact highlights in the Kelsey collection. Mid-Day Morsel tours begin at 12:30 PM. No registration is needed. Tour participants should gather at our Maynard Street entrance a few minutes before the tour is scheduled to start.\n\nWhile we do not allow food at the Kelsey Museum\, there are numerous lunch options near us on campus. Check out the UMMA Café at the Museum of Art and Darwin’s Café at the Museum of Natural History before or after your tour of the Kelsey.\n\nMid-Day Morsel tours are free and open to all visitors. DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one-session workshop combining multiple instructional tools to engage graduate students in meaningful dialogue about the various forms of sexual misconduct\, including sexual harassment\, assault\, and discrimination\, that they may encounter. Participants are then able to build skills to intervene safely in potentially harmful situations. ERC workshops make use of the circle process\, which focuses on building meaningful connections between participants and ensuring all participants can engage in respectful dialogue. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Leader Inclusivity through the Lens of Marginalized Employees: Pathways to Combat Systemic Inequities
DESCRIPTION:Scholars have increasingly recognized the importance of leaders in workplace inclusion. To date\, leader inclusivity has been conceptualized as a relational approach that builds an equally shared sense of group membership among employees while fostering an appreciation for the unique value of each individual. Yet\, broader systems\, norms\, and practices in organizations can also elicit exclusion. Through an inductive investigation of leader inclusivity\, in a sample of 47 minority-identified employees in STEM organizations\, we find that leader inclusivity was perceived as centering on leaders’ actions to combat inequitable systems\, norms\, and practices. Further\, because these equity-oriented actions were thought to be controversial in nature\, we find that such actions provoked adversarial responses from employees who are invested in the status quo. In turn\, we reveal that leaders must also manage these responses effectively\, in order for inclusivity to be sustained. Taken together\, and departing significantly from current conceptualizations of leader inclusivity\, we find that minority employees view leader inclusivity as a set of pathways which are each set in motion via leaders’ actions to combat inequity. Our results inform a more processual\, systemic\, equity-based approach to studying and practicing leader inclusivity.
