SUMMARY:Presentation:Fueling for endurance – from keto to carbs!
DESCRIPTION:Day: Tuesday\, May 5\, 2026\nTime: 7 pm to 8 pm\nLocation: U-M Chemistry Bldg.\, Room 1400\n\nDr. Burke is a sports dietitian with 45 years of experience in the education and counselling of elite athletes. She worked at the Australian Institute of Sport for thirty years\, first as Head of Sports Nutrition and then as Chief of Nutrition Strategy and now serves as Chair in Sports Nutrition in the Mary MacKillop Institute of Health Research at Australian Catholic University in Melbourne.\n \nTalk Summary: Carbohydrates have powered endurance performance for a century—from early race-day sugar use to modern glycogen-loading and sports nutrition products. Yet the rise of ketogenic/LCHF approaches has sparked debate and confusion for athletes and coaches. This session cuts through the hype to explore what the evidence says\, why context matters\, and how to build a more nuanced\, “unifying” approach to fueling endurance performance.\n\nRegister at: https://tinyurl.com/Louise-Burke

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Mind Matters: AI and Mental Health Risks
DESCRIPTION:From schools and workplaces to the phones in our pockets\, AI tools are everywhere. As more people use generative AI tools like ChatGPT\, Claude\, and others in their daily lives\, concerns are rising among mental health and technology researchers about how these tools can affect the way we think and feel—not necessarily for the better. \n\nJoin us as experts from the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry and School of Information discuss the risks of using AI tools and chatbots when it comes to our mental health and wellbeing. They will break down how this technology can negatively impact our mental health\, what mental health workers are seeing with their patients in the real world\, and what we can all do to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. SUMMARY:Performance:Mama's Broke
DESCRIPTION:“raw\, rootsy and alive - uplifting and a joy to hear” –Folk Radio UK\n\nMama's Broke is a powerful duo that deliver a compelling performance with heart and raw energy. Although highly influenced by their Canadian roots\, Lisa and Amy are based out of nowhere and everywhere. Their two strong voices blend to create haunting harmonies\, while they artfully juggle fiddle\, banjo\, guitar and mandolin\, and incorporate traditional dance and foot percussion into their performance. Their original -and often dark- compositions push the boundaries of tradition and the constraints of genre. Drawing from old-time\, Quebecois\, blues\, punk\, celtic\, balkan and doom metal\, they create a soundscape that is both familiar and new.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? Do they empower you to act?\n\nArtist’s name: Versha Pleasant\nWork Title: Image 2\nDate of creation: September 2024\nArtist’s statement: Photo by Tafari Stevenson-Howard\"
