DESCRIPTION:College is a time when many of us think about the ways we might want to make an imprint on the world. We’re inviting students (individuals and/or groups of friends) to come to the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and explore making an imprint through the work of artist Nicole Marroquin.\n\nMarroquin’s exhibition With Care was created specifically for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. It puts her printmaking and sculpture in dialogue with Mexican-born artist and educator Diana Solis’s photographs of Chicana and lesbian community organizing. Together\, the work visually articulates the complex and exquisite nature of the human relationships that bind us\, and the imprint these two extraordinary artists have made on the world.This interactive experience includes:A curator-led guided tour of the exhibition\nAn opportunity to reflect on the idea of “making an imprint” by creating your own printmaking block and creating a work of art on paper or a t-shirt\nAn ice-cream sundae bar with lots of toppings!\nPresented by the Public Humanities Interns at the Institute for the Humanities.

DESCRIPTION:Altan\, named for Loch Altan in Ireland's County Donegal\, has arguably had a wider impact on audiences over the last 30 years than any other traditional Irish band. Their dynamic and warm live performances mix the most touching old Irish songs with hard-hitting reels and jigs\, and the band members' interest in and sheer enjoyment of each other musically is apparent even to audience members new to the Irish tradition. For the Irish music enthusiast\, Altan has a treasure trove of brilliant moves to offer: the mix of sounds from Donegal with outside influences\, the sheer virtuosity of the players\, the beauty\, delicate singing\, and down-to-earth charm of singer and fiddler Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh. Anywhere they go\, a concert by Altan is the Irish music event of the year\, and you can also pick up a copy of the group’s new book\, “The Tunes.”

DESCRIPTION:For more info and to apply: https://www.cew.umich.edu/advocacy-initiatives/twink-frey-visiting-social-activist-program\n\nEach year the Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist (TFVSA) Program brings to CEW+ a social justice activist whose work affects women and recognizes gender equity issues. One goal of the program is to build the capacity and effectiveness of social activists by giving the TFVSA time\, space\, and support to work on a project that would not be possible under the activist’s usual working circumstances.\n\nThe TFVSA program gives the selected TFVSA time for reflection\, research\, planning\, and writing related to their area of activism. Each TFVSA is required to work on a project that will advance their future work and potentially benefit other activists.\n\nIf selected\, the applicant is invited to reside near campus for up to one month or make intermittent visits to Ann Arbor and work remotely. The 2024 residency will take place during the winter semester with a presentation of their project the following fall semester at the CEW+ Annual Advocacy Symposium. The activist receives a $10\,000 stipend to cover their expenses while in Ann Arbor. Travel expenses to and from Ann Arbor are separately reimbursed by the endowment fund.\n\nELIGIBILITY\n\nThe TFVSA program supports activists whose work addresses gender equity issues that affect the lives of women and/or girls. The program defines social justice and equity programs broadly to include activism in such areas as housing\, employment\, income support\, food security\, education\, violence\, child care\, health care\, and employer benefits like paid sick leave and retirement income.

DESCRIPTION:The Homework Help program offers children assistance with their homework assignments. Children are encouraged to bring homework and are paired with a volunteer to assist them. This program is a critical service in helping children thrive. Volunteers give children the tools they need to be successful in school.Virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities are available.
