SUMMARY:Presentation:Ancient Philosophy: Klaus Corcilius (Tübingen)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \"Practical Truth in Aristotle\"\nThis paper offers a new interpretation of Aristotle’s account of practical truth as the agreement of “true practical reasoning” with “right desire\". Four questions are posed: What is right desire? In which way can thinking that a particular thing or course of action is good be true? How can right desire and practical reasoning agree on the same object? Why does Aristotle speak of practical truth in the first place? The answers will situate Aristotle’s account of practical truth in his general teleology of the practical. \n\n The main philosophical claims are the following: (i) practical rationality\, like all rationality for Aristotle\, is fundamentally concerned with principles\; (ii) practical truth is the conscious pursuit of a particular course of action as agreeing with the pursuit of an appropriate value in a given situation as that value’s appropriate embodiment. (iii) Aristotle conceptualises this embodiment as a kind of identity. (iv) Practical truth is the best result and achievement (ergon) of episodes of practical reasoning\; however\, it is neither the essence of practical rationality\, nor otherwise a guiding concept in the architecture of Aristotle's philosophy of human affairs.”

SUMMARY:Film Screening:ASC Film Screening & Discussion. *Mama Africa—The story of Zenzile Miriam Makeba* (Women's History Month)
DESCRIPTION:Film screening followed by a panel discussion about the life of Zenzile Miriam Makeba\, a South African singer and crusader against apartheid\, with a look at her life\, career\, and activism through the lens of archival footage.\n\n*Mama Africa—The story of Zenzile Miriam Makeba*\nA film by Mika Kaurismäki\, Documentary\, South Africa (2011)\n\nSYNOPSIS\n\nMAMA AFRICA: MIRIAM MAKEBA serves as a powerful introduction to a new generation of Americans to Miriam Makeba\, South African singer and anti-apartheid activist\, the voice and the hope of Africa.\n\nMiriam Makeba was the first African musician to become a true international star. Her music - which influenced artists across the globe - always remained anchored in her traditional South African roots and conveyed strong messages against racism and poverty.\n\nMiriam Makeba was forced into a life in exile\, after staring in the 1959 documentary film “COME BACK AFRICA” which exposed the harsh realities of apartheid. She sang for John F. Kennedy and Marlon Brando\, performed with Harry Belafonte\, Nina Simone and Dizzie Gillespie\, was married to Hugh Masekela and also the radical Black Panther\, Stokely Carmichael. Her life was tumultuous but always fascinating. She stood for truth and justice\, fought for the oppressed and campaigned tirelessly against apartheid.\n\nShe died collapsing after leaving the stage at a concert in the Southern Italian town of Castel Volturno in November 2008. Makeba was 76 years old.\n\nThis documentary\, directed by Mika Kaurismäki\, traces her life and music through more than fifty years of performing. Using rare archive footage of her performances\, interviews and intimate scenes filmed over the years\, this powerful documentary expertly exposes the biography of a unique person\, a world icon. Friends and colleagues\, some who knew her since she started performing in the dance halls of South Africa (remember “Pata Pata”)\, together with her grandchildren Zenzi Monique Lee and Nelson Lumumba Lee\, allow us to learn about the remarkable journey of Miriam Makeba\, “Mama Africa”.\n\nhttps://www.miriam-makeba-movie.com/synopsis\n\nThe event is free\, please register at http://forms.gle/uwi58aAtKQjn4e246

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Cherry Meyer is an Assistant Professor and holds a joint appointment in the Departments of American Culture (AC) and Linguistics at the University of Michigan Department.\n\nTitle\n‘Exceptional’ Animates in Ojibwe: The Link Between Gender and Classifiers\n\nAbstract\nOjibwe and other Algonquian languages have grammatical gender with two values commonly called ANIMATE and INANIMATE. In Ojibwe\, gender assignment is based on semantics rather than phonology or morphology. Nouns with animate referents are assigned to the ANIMATE gender\, e.g. ikwe ‘woman’ and makwa ‘bear’\, while nouns with inanimate referents are assigned to the INANIMATE gender\, e.g. wiiyaas ‘meat’ and izaaga’igan ‘lake’. Exceptions to this generalization are found in the ANIMATE gender\, i.e. nouns with inanimate referents assigned to the ANIMATE gender\, e.g. asekaan ‘tanned hide’ and miskomin ‘raspberry’. I propose an analysis of gender assignment based on the semantics of the classifier system. Such ‘exceptional’ nouns are compatible with the semantics of one of five sortal classifiers\, illustrated by pairings of classifiers and nouns (1-5).\n\n1. /-aatig/ ‘long\, narrow\, rigid’\, i.e. stick-like / mitig ‘tree’\n\n2. /-aabiig/ ‘long\, narrow\, flexible’\, i.e. string-like / zesab ‘nettle’\n\n3. /-eg/ ‘long\, wide\, flexible’\, i.e. sheet-like / asekaan ‘tanned hide’\n\n4. /-minag/ ‘small\, round’\, i.e. berry-like / miskomin ‘raspberry’\n\n5. /-aabik/ ‘mineral’\, i.e. metal\, stone\, glass / asin ‘a stone’\n\nThe role of analogy via semantic extension\, as well as complexities arising from dialectal differences and diachronic changes are discussed.\n\nYou can also join us on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91292768774

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCAIM Grad Seminar: Modeling CTL-mediated Tumor Cell Death Mechanisms and the Activity of Immune Checkpoints in Immunotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Immunotherapy has dramatically transformed the cancer treatment landscape. Of the variety of types of immunotherapies available\, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have gained the spotlight. Although ICIs have shown promising results for some patients\, the low response rates in many cancers highlight the challenges of using immune checkpoint blockade as an effective treatment. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) execute their cell-killing function via two distinct mechanisms. The first process is fast-acting and perforin/granzyme-mediated\, and the second is a slower\, Fas ligand (FasL)-driven killing mechanism. There is also evidence suggesting that the preferred killing mechanism by CTLs depends on the antigenicity of tumor cells. To determine the key factors affecting responses to checkpoint blockade therapy\, we constructed an ordinary differential equation model describing in vivo tumor-immune dynamics in the presence of active or blocked PD-1/PD-L1 immune checkpoint. Specifically\, we analyzed which aspects of the tumor-immune landscape affect the response to ICIs with endpoints of tumor size and composition in the short and long term. By generating a virtual cohort with heterogeneous tumor and immune attributes\, we also simulated the therapeutic outcomes of immune checkpoint blockade in a largely diverse population. In this way\, we identified key tumor and immune characteristics that are associated with tumor elimination\, dormancy and escape. Our analysis sheds light on which fraction of a population potentially responds well to ICIs and ways to enhance therapeutic outcomes with combination\ntherapy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Periodic points of translation surfaces
DESCRIPTION:A Veech surface is a translation surface whose (affine) automorphism group is as large as possible. While a generic point of a Veech surface equidistributes under the action of its automorphism group\, there is an exceptional finite set of points with finite orbits. These periodic points appear throughout Teichmüller dynamics\, such as in counting holomorphic sections of families of Riemann surfaces and in blocking problems on billiard tables. In this talk we first describe joint work with Zawad Chowdhury\, Samuel Everett and Destine Lee that gives an algorithm that computes the set of periodic points for a given Veech surface. We then describe work that classifies the periodic points of Prym eigenforms\, an infinite family of Veech surfaces in genera 2\, 3 and 4.
