SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Collaborative Intelligence: Learning Together from Heterogeneous Data and Language
DESCRIPTION:Data are increasingly generated by many connected users\, machines\, and systems\, which has led to explosive interest in collaborative analytics\, such as federated learning\, that borrow strength across diverse sources. To date\, these efforts have focused mainly on predictive modeling. In this talk\, I argue that collaboration\, without untangling the nature of heterogeneity across users\, can lead to swift and evident failures. Indeed\, borrowing from the wrong sources can be worse than not collaborating at all. To this end\, I present two frameworks that address two questions at the heart of collaboration: what to share\, and whom to borrow from. First\, we introduce Personalized PCA\, a descriptive framework that extracts interpretable and identifiable features describing what is shared and what is unique across diverse datasets. Second\, I bring language into the collaboration. When a new user has too little data to tell which collaborators are relevant\, expert textual descriptions of the new system\, often available yet overlooked\, can fill the gap. Here\, a large language model translates these descriptions into a prior over source relevance that guides learning when data are scarce and is gradually corrected as data accumulate. I conclude by highlighting future directions at the intersection of agentic AI\, statistics\, and decision making.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Double Duty: A Subsidy Design for\\Quality Promotion and Price Discipline
DESCRIPTION:This paper studies how the design of quality-linked subsidies shapes firm behavior in both quality choices and pricing decisions. We examine a major reform in Medicare Advantage that links subsidies to quality through two distinct policy parameters. We develop and estimate a structural model of demand and firm behavior to evaluate the reform\, decompose its effects\, and compare alternative quality-linked subsidy designs. A central finding is that a subsidy design that links product quality to both the subsidy level and the pass-through from firm prices to subsidized consumer prices can simultaneously raise quality and lower prices.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Building Apple Silicon: A Journey of Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nCustom silicon has become one of the most important drivers of innovation in modern computing and is the key to delivering game-changing performance\, power efficiency\, capabilities\, and user experiences. Drawing on more than three decades in the semiconductor industry\, Sri Santhanam\, the Vice President of Silicon Engineering at Apple and a Michigan EECS alumnus\, will reflect on Apple’s silicon journey and how it has shaped products across Apple’s entire ecosystem. As demand for chips surges and artificial intelligence transforms both silicon demand and design methodologies\, the need for skilled engineers has never been greater. The continued advancement of custom silicon depends on our shared commitment to developing the talent that will drive the next wave of innovation.\n\nBio:\n\nSribalan Santhanam (Sri) is the vice president of Silicon Engineering at Apple. He has been at Apple since 2008 and is responsible for the design\, development\, and manufacturing of application processors and power management ICs. Sri leads a team of silicon and technology engineers who create breakthrough custom chips that power iPhone\, iPad\, Mac\, Apple Watch\, and more. Prior to Apple\, he was the co-founder and vice president of engineering at P.A. Semi and held leadership roles in chip design at Broadcom\, Sibyte\, and Digital Equipment Corporation. Sri received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Anna University in 1987 and his master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Michigan in 1989.
